Overwatch 2 Will Replace The Existing Game At Launch

After the game launches in Early Access on October 4, 2022, the previous version will not be available.

As has previously been understood, Overwatch 2 will replace the current game at launch. In essence, current owners of Overwatch will download a patch and the game will become Overwatch 2, with all the associated changes to multiplayer. For example, the game will change to a 5v5 format and introduce various balance alterations. The promised PvE campaign mode is slated to release in 2023.

The clarification came via a Reddit AMA. In a post from the Overwatch 2 Game Director, Aaron Keller, stated that the game’s launch on October 4th represents the beginning of Early Access. He added, “We’re using the term Early Access to indicate that this is just the start of many new things coming to the game.” The plan to replace the original Overwatch also fits in with the new free-to-play model. Larger content updates will come seasonally, every nine weeks, according to the roadmap Blizzard recently put out. Season 1 will feature Sojourn and Junker Queen, as well as a new map. You can find more details of the game’s launch in GameSpot’s guide everything we know about Overwatch 2 and our interview with Aaron Keller.

Now Playing: Overwatch 2: The Big Interview

Any news about Overwatch 2 occurs in the context of sexual harassment and abuse allegations, as well as unionization efforts, at developer and publisher Activision Blizzard. Microsoft recently agreed to recognize a union after they acquire Activision Blizzard. In the meantime, however, the shareholders voted to keep CEO Bobby Kotick on the board of directors. Despite the demand from many employees that he should resign, it seems that he will stay on until 2023.

I mean, it's not like the original game still existed either way. With all the heroes they added, balance patches, ability changes... the game changed a lot since launch. This is just a continuation of that.

But are they cutting any content trough the update?

I don't really mind the update, or the 5 vs 5 count.

I just don't want to loose any content i paid for.

@lucidique: It's more like a big update to Overwatch that tweaks a lot of stuff and adds new things and makes the game free to play. I don't think they're cutting any content, unless I'm missing something.

Imagine paying money for a game and putting hundreds or thousands of hours into it and then they erase that game from existence. Way to go Activizzard.

Damn. Not trying to defend Destiny, but at least bungie had the courtesy to keep Destiny 1 and not sunset it into Destiny 2

That being said, does anyone even play Destiny 1 anymore?

@duggd1ggler: Conversely, they do sunset content out of Destiny 2. I booted it up when the PS5/XSX version came out wanting to play that intro mission through the burning tower with all its GPU particle sparks and explosions and what not only to find that you now play a bootleg version of the original Destiny's intro on a new character and go to the Cosmodome and stuff to start with instead, literally playing the first dozen hours of Destiny 1.

@Xylymphydyte: indeed! You are correct. And what sucks even more, they sunset content and expansions you have already paid for, so you’ve basically wasted your money on content that you’ll never be able to replay at some point. It’s ridiculous, it’s shady, but people keep giving them money so they’ll keep doing it unfortunately.

@duggd1ggler: how can you even compare a mmo to pvp lobby game, overwatch is such a simple game. granted not everyone going to be happy about this at least it's free.

@cydie: Sure, it’s free because you already paid for it when you bought Overwatch 1 and it’s free for newcomers. Only difference is that now you have to buy battle passes and pay for skins directly instead of being able to earn them.

Someone theorized this might **** up trophy hunters on PS4. They won't be able to access that list anymore and instead will be stuck with a new list. Fine for those that completed the original but totally fucks over those still working through it.

It's anyone's guess how the Xbox list will work, which is a much harder list for any PS users that were curious. PS version only added trophies for new characters, Xbox added achievements for all those shitty timed events like the holiday stuff and the random PVE crap.

An absolute disgrace, and something Activision has done before, to disastrous results. They are reducing the number of people in each game by 20% and pretending like it's a FEATURE worth wiping the entire game out for! What if you frequently played with 5 other friends? Just gonna have to tell one of them to screw off?

People BOUGHT the original game and who want to play the original game and who want none of their "sequel" are being stabbed in the back.

What is wrong with this company and the people at this company. It's crystal clear at this point they do not care about the people playing their games.

That's a bad idea.

2 words, "Warcraft Reforged".

So it is just a big update then, not really a sequel

@epic_poke8: Exactly. Just like how Warzone updates for each new COD. Except they eliminated the entrance fee and changed it into a micro-transaction storefront, where instead of earning premium skins, you have to pay for them individually and pay for season passes as well. They saw the money in Fortnite’s and Call of Duty’s ways and copied that strategy. Sadly, it will be successful for them. Even though we all hate it, most people will give in to it anyways. But not this guy. No thanks.

So, for the people who like Overwatch as it is and would prefer to continue playing that game...screw you.

Blizz is completely tone deaf at this point. They pulled the same stunt with Warcraft 3. I don't know how many times they have to give their fans the finger before people stop buying their games.

I keep hearing the changes to team size have had a horrible impact on the game, this sounds like a recipe for disaster.

@Xylymphydyte: Whoever is saying that is genuinely not someone worth listening to. 5v5 has been overwhelmingly positively received by pros, former pros, analysts, and other people who are actually involved in the game.

6v6 will probably have its place in workshop modes and the just-for-fun arcade section, but it is definitely rough to be shutting the game down so soon. I understand their fear of splitting the playerbase though. They need this to work to keep the game alive or there won't be any Overwatch at all.

@blackparrottt: Every game I've played that made changes based on the advice of pros has been ruined.

@blackparrottt: Making game changes only for pros has ruined one Blizzard game after another.
