Overwatch: Blizzard Doesn't Mess Around When It Comes to Banning Cheaters

Blizzard seems to be doing a good job at making cheaters pay for not playing fair.

Overwatch released last week, and already Blizzard has banned a surprisingly large number of players. More than 1500 in China have been kicked out permanently, and players have posted on popular hacking forums that they can't trick Blizzard's cheat detection.

The 1572 banned players in China were called out by username on Blizzard's forums, and PC Gamer has posted screenshots of Western websites full of forum posts that detail cheaters' failed attempts at playing the game with hacks. One player claimed they were banned, and after re-buying the game and playing fairly for a couple days, they were banned again--the software they had used previously was likely detected on their PC.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Blizzard Doesn't Mess Around When It Comes to Banning Overwatch Cheaters

After going through a process of changing their MAC address, processor ID data, and other information, they tried again; however, they were banned once again without using any methods of cheating or hacking. The player notes that Blizzard "might have file(registry)marked" his computer, which means they'll likely have to reinstall the OS to get around it.

"So I guess I need to say goodbye to this game," they said. "I regret poking around d3d11 [wallhack] during the beta."

Blizzard takes cheating seriously, as evidenced by one one person who posted a screenshot of an account closure email they received from the developer.

"We don't take this decision lightly," the email reads. "Our team issued this closure after a careful review of relevant evidence. Our support staff will not overturn these closures and may not respond to appeals."

You can see all of the screenshots over on PC Gamer.

The lesson here seems to be that you shouldn't cheat--not even once. Hopefully you already knew that.

Waiting DICE do exactly the same with Battlefield Franshise. On Battlefield 4 (wish I loved too much) they are so many cheaters and it's too easy to do. The cheaters are more intelligent on these days. They don't cheat hardcore, so you don't relise quickly. When you do, they go to another server, but they are not punished like Blizzard do. They are just sometime kicked out only. Sorry for my English, I'm from Puerto Rico.

I'm fine with banning cheaters, but once they re-purchase the game and play it on another account without cheats, they should be allowed to play it and not be banned for no other reason than being a cheater once. Just because you steal something from a shop you don't get to jail everytime you enter a shop, just because you once stole something.

That aside, I'm a fan of putting all cheaters together on the same server(s). So they can cheat however they want without annoying us legit players :D

@ArchoNils2: actually, if you steal something from s shop, that shop has the right to bar you from their establishment. Honestly, if you caught someone stealing from you, would you allow them back in?

@ArchoNils2: Thats somewhat flawed.

1. It makes it much MUCH easier to develop new better hacks for the game. Making the risk of messing up significantly smaller.

2. Games like this can suffer tremendously from hacks, just look at the division on PC fight now. A hard line seems to be required to keep the cheaters down. For some people throwing 40$ at the game again just isn't a lot, especially if you are selling wallhacks for 15$ a pop. This becomes significantly more pricey when you might have to burn through 10 copies of Overwatch to figure out how not to get banned again.

3. **** em.

@garvielt: Wait, hacks are being sold? I always thought this is like modding, just some dudes trying to see how far they can go. Well still, they could at least add a counter which gives you a second chance and only locks you after the second hack.

I don't get it. Why the hell would you play a competitive game and cheat at it? Doesn't that defeat the purpose? It's no longer competitive if you cheat and you don't really win if you cheat, either. You may be victorious, but the cheat is the one that won.

I understand the desire to be awesome, and I remember using cheat codes in old games when I was younger, but I also remember how much less fun it was once you started cheating. Nothing was a surprise or a challenge anymore, you just ran in circles destroying everything with impunity, which isn't fun for nearly as long as you'd think.

But doing it in competition against others? I guess I'm a strange one, because I really don't see the appeal at all. If I win and beat someone, I want to do it under my own power using my own skills. That way, if/when I win, it feels like I actually accomplished something. It's real rewarding to make a good move and see yourself in the play of the game at the end, too!

This is how cheating should always be handled. If you don't do it then you have nothing at all to worry about. It's always funny to hear the excuses of people who get caught up in this mess.

Am all for perma banning an account, but perma ban on every new account/copy is kinda too much, especially if they scan your pc to know if they banned you before.

Even clean accounts are banned if they were played on "compromised" machines (2 or more people playing on different accounts on the same machine).

It's way to much freedom that they have given to themselves.

Who is to say what all they are scanning and what can they do with it.

@noirtenshin: the article does mention that it may have been a case of detecting the softwares existence, not specifically them using it.

It's a step in the right direction, if you're putting your games and accounts at risk by simply installing a hack, then you'll be far less likely to even attempt it. This also works for the guys that put the hacks together, if it's detected in any way shape or form and it hotlists their pc, then it makes it that much more difficult / punishing to make the hacks in the first place.

so long as it doesn't affect Innocent users (and i've reasonable faith that Blizzard have some fine honed detection for this sort of thing) then I'm all for it, personally, kick out the cheaters and let them go elsewhere.

@noirtenshin: I ran a (counter strike based) gaming community for almost 9 years. When we banned hackers, we banned the steamID. If it was possible for us to know that someone who we banned bought another copy of the game and returned to any of our servers, we banned that account as well, etc. If the sole penalty for cheating is the cost of the game, than getting busted for cheating is only as meaningful as the dent it puts in your wallet. A full priced game is peanuts to some people, and over time the price of the game will come down as well. CS:GO can be bought for like $7 on sale so everybody and their pet monkeys all have main/alt/smurf accounts, etc. This so called freedom you speak of, if Blizzard doesn't have it, then the hackers do. Lets not empower hackers any more than they already are.

@alaskancrab: but then the money needs to go to the cheated ones, not blizzard.

And there should be a warning that any account that continues to play on that machine will get banned,

Also doesn't justify the data gathering on players that not cheat or getting wrongly accused of cheating. Seems like both are just collateral damage.

Good on Blizzard for doing this kind of thing...if you want to cheat, do it in some offline single player game, not an online multiplayer game where it could have a big effect on the outcome. Also, apparently it's not just Overwatch, but you'll get banned from all other Blizzard games as well: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/167599-Overwatch-Cheaters-Get-Banned-For-Life.

Hey Ubisoft and Massive, this is how you deal with cheating in your games. Perhaps it's time to take notice.

I just dont understand cheating in this fashion. Its not a real testament to your skill, in fact its the polar opposite. Part of the fun in games is the challenge and reward for accomplishing difficult tasks. Losers

@jasonb520: it's more to test/develop their programming skills because most people who write their own most likely went/go to IT college and have a career in programming making 6 figures. every person i know who writes their own cheats have a background in programming and graduated/attending IT school. hackers know the game better than the developers themselves, some even report game breaking exploits. the people who pay for the cheats are the ones who are terrible/try to make themselves look good/just flat out dont care and set out to ruin games for their own enjoyment.

@Zloth2: It's not that.

they have no anti cheat of any sort, they have no idea how to run this kind of an online game.

they go around on streams showing people how they actively ban, but it's all just for show and pretty damn primitive.

they are complete and utter shit of a compeny.

hackers banned for life needs to become a default thing, they deserve this and i applaud bliz for doing so.

and The Division is a piece of shit also, even if it did have the anti cheat.

I, for one, am glad Blizzard is doing this. Too many times have I run up against hackers/cheaters in GTAO, and they've gotten a slap on the wrist, if that. That's not enough. "Second chance" my eye. One shot was more than enough; if ya screwed that up, that's your fault/problem. Sayonara.

I wish EA would do this for battlefield, but they won't, because they prefer to have the hackers money rather than giving people a good mp experience...

@jack00: that argument doesn't make sense because EA already have the hackers money at that point. Cheaters dont get a refund because they breach the EULA agreement that they agree to before installing the game. The stories of people buying Overwatch like 4 times and being insta-banned is pretty hilarious!

EA/Dice don't do it because, presumably, it's fucking hard to do and keep on top of. Blizzard also has their watchguard spyware (or whatever it's called) running on the computer when u run their games...

At the end of the day, there will be cheaters in this game because it's just a cat and mouse game between the hackers and the admins. It's just a matter of time

@AshTrai: They might get their account banned, but no way they will stop them from buying the game again and the DLCs with a different accout nd what not. And they don't do it because "its hard" ? Give me a break. If blizard can do it so can they.
