Overwatch Director On Loot Boxes -- "We Are Listening"

"The feedback and suggestions have been helpful to us."

73 Comments

Blizzard is aware of the feedback surrounding Overwatch's loot boxes, for the Anniversary event and in general, game director Jeff Kaplan said in a forum post recently. He did not mention any particular issues specifically, but he said Blizzard is looking into what can be done to respond to the feedback.

"I just wanted to acknowledge that we've been following the threads about the loot box rewards as they pertain to the anniversary events, other events and loot boxes in general," Kaplan said. "The feedback and suggestions have been helpful to us. We had a really great discussion yesterday about the feedback we've been hearing this week. While I don't have any immediate action items to report, I thought it was important for you to know that we are listening."

Now Playing: Grading Overwatch's Incredible First Year

Kaplan said he welcomes the community to continue to talk about loot boxes, as well as other rewards and Overwatch cosmetic items.

Some have been critical of Overwatch's existence as a premium game that also has microtransactions, in particular the loot box system that gives you random skins and sprays, among other things. Players can purchase loot boxes with real money, though the rewards are still random.

For more on Overwatch, check out GameSpot's breakdown video above that covers the shooter's first year. The game's Anniversary event is going on now, featuring three new Arena maps and new skins, among other things, while a Game of the Year edition is available now.

This is why they need to make the competitive currency being able to buy past events cosmetic, so you can work toward something more than a gold weapon you already own.

Honestly with all the events combined, I think I got as many event loot boxes as I did regular loot boxes, and I've gotten so much better loot from the regular ones. I don't know, I really feel they make the loot drop rates of event loot boxes much worse just so they can push microtransactions.

It's an ok game but I think Teamfortress 2 is better. The games last a lot longer on TF 2.

The randomness is total BS. If you are paying money in MT, you should be able to get what you want, even Ubisoft understands that.

That's silly. You totally don't need any of those cosmetic items. The only useful ones are the lines that suggest things that could be interpreted as instructions in game such as Torb's "No! No! NO!" or Ana's "Children! Behave!".

Okay, reading over more of the comments and I now see the problem. Overwatch players believe the cosmetic items are "content". It's not. Well, technically yes, but not really meaningful content. It's entirely optional and in no way entitled. If someone is playing Overwatch JUST for the skins, then clearly they don't really like the game all that much in the first place and was gonna complain about SOMETHING eventually.

@Barighm: Unfortunately, there is a whole generation of gamers that are obsessed with cosmetic items as well as "unlocking" things. Fun is barely even in the equation. Once they "unlock" everything they quit playing because they think they have "finished" the game. I'm glad that Blizzard is making it so hard. I could care less about cosmetic items. I play for fun and fun only.

That's why I don't play Overwatch anymore. It takes forever to get a loot box, and 9/10 you get duplicates and skins for characters that you never use. You can choose to buy the skins.....IF YOU HAVE AN INSANE AMOUNT OF CURRENCY.

I'm sick of Pay2Play bullshit.

IT IS RUINING GAMING

@LonelyHippie27: Thats ridiculous. Besides the initial cost of the game, I've spent nothing and have had a lot of fun so far. You were apparently so obsessed with "Getting stuff" you lost sight of just the simple fun of the game. Thats your fault, not theirs.

@LonelyHippie27: Is that sarcasm? It must be. You don't need to spend a single penny after the initial purchase and you can easily pick up the coin to buy all the skins you want just through regular leveling. Suggesting Overwatch is a P2P game is just ridiculous.

It's optional. If you want to pay then pay. If you don't want to then don't. I don't buy microtransactions no matter how good the game is so it's whatever to me. However if you like the game and don't care about money and really want to pay for digital items that make no difference in the game then go ahead and enjoy. Regardless of what the hardcore here think, this type of DLC sells. The casuals gobble it up. If it didn't sell it wouldn't be in the game. So what does that tell you? Yes, people(most) want DLC.

@fig56: It's the only kind of fair DLC and AAA games need DLC dollars to stay relevant these days. It's the best "win-win" scenario out there, so we should be happy if we see cosmetic systems like this.

@Barighm:

So how does league of legend stay relevant, oh blizzard employee?

Not only do they make $0 on the initial purchase of the game but they sell their skins for money only. Surely, people wouldnt pay them and they would go under.

Oh wait, Riot is rich. They did it by selling product based on quality and value instead of by luring kids and people with gambling disorders or impulse control problems to spend ludicrous amount of money on half arsed low quality skins where they dont even bother to put in particle effects or sounds.

You clearly work for blizz...no way in hell someone would be so motivated to support such a crooked and despicable system.

@Kezzy123: Kids are their parents responsibility, not Blizzards, As for adults, its personal responsibility. If they are an adult they need to act like one. If they have a "disorder" it is THEIR responsibility to get help, nobody else's, PERIOD, END OF STORY. Nobody can make a drunk get help. they have to help themselves by seeking counseling. All addictions require the individual to seek help. You can't help somebody that doesn't want it. Fact.

@spartanx169x: thanks for the lesson genius. maybe next time, try to get a minimum of education into the matter before you start to discuss and talk about 'facts". it is illegal to prey on elderly and people with mental disorders to get their money. Although Bli$$ard is not specifically targetting this group, their design is very strongly based on luring these groups. Why am i arguing with someone with 69 in his name anyways....it says everything about the individual.

I never get anything good from loot boxes, it's usually crap or duplicates, with my luck, if I bought 50, I wouldn't get any epic loot

Spending money and getting a different colour costume, spray, user icon, emote, what a waste of money

RNG unlocks in a full priced game are so tacky. It's like they don't want the stigma of having "premium" skins, but still want the money.

"I just wanted to say that we are surprised that the cows finally realized how badly we were milking them. Were listening. But we dont really care. Keep giving milk. Cows. " -Jeff Kaplan

This game is a joke. The most greedy unethical practices I have ever seen in a game. Anniversary event with no reward whatsoever and instead, locked emotes and skins that are GENERIC that should have been added to the regular item list but locked behind time restricted "event" . no reward for beta players....i never seen any company do that before Blizz. Its just gross. DONT SUPPORT THAT SCAM COMPANY

@Kezzy123: The only gross thing about this comment is the exaggeration. YOU DON'T NEED THE COSMETICS! More importantly, they're far from the first company to offer time restricted rewards. ME3 did it, for one, am I'm entirely certain someone else did it before them. And, hey, there's a good example of a far more scummy practise. The multiplayer that has no impact on the singleplayer...but totally does.

@Barighm:

You are completely clueless.

Skins add value to the product. You want people involved and keep playing you add custom stuff to keep them grinding for it and the result is a longer life line for your product. The system they have now is a pure fraud, a scam and a disgusting system devised on preying on impulses and gambling addicts. If they wanted a fair system that self sustain the game they would sell the skins for a flat fee. But instead they put them in a way where they give you the illusion that you can acquire them without paying but jacked the price of the in game purchase and completely water down the odds with garbage sprays s that you have nearly no chance of getting them for free. Any collector will feel forced to buy but will be forced in a lootbox random charade instead of paying $2 for a skin worth $2 instead of $200 for a chance at still getting only a portion of the new content before it is locked.

its pure robbery and if you defend that system, you either work for bli$$ard or you are a complete tool, which in turn, would make you a great bli$$ard employee. So I guess either way you lose.

Look boxes earned through playing should have a scaling % on receiving legendary or rare rewards. Every loot box that doesn't reward a rare increases your chance of getting a rare on the next box by x% and resets when you get one. Xmas and halloween events, I cleaned up and got all the skins within 20-30 boxes, but this current event and the last one I've got nothing in the same amount.

As for purchased loot boxes, perhaps the % could be higher or make it a guarantee but charge more for the box, or make duplicates give more rewards.

@dcoutten: Right. I think there's lots of ways they can go about it to accomplish what people want. You could make an option to combine say.. 5 regular loot boxes into a box that guarantees a rare you don't have. Or 15 loot boxes to guarantee a legendary... something like that. I want to see a Kanai's cube implemented immediately!

My main is Pharrah and I got her anniversary skin on my second of three loot boxes. I also got the cyborg anniversary skin for Soldier on my first attempt.

I've found the loot system to be perfectly fair and it's also cosmetic so there is no impact on the game.

Edit: I think it would be fair to remove the lock from event items and add a separate "event" box purchasable with in game currency. That would keep the rarity but also let you still have a chance at gear for your favorite character.

I also agree with the below in that dupes need a higher return on coins.

@Kezzy123: Not at all. I never said I find it to be perfectly fair because I received two of the top tier skins in two separate boxes. My comment was on the loot system in its entirety not just the boxes. I find it fair because every player has a fair shot at getting a decent item through the boxes and can earn enough currency to purchase the item on their own without having to go through the boxes.

Edit: Not to mention the fact that they give you additional ways to earn the boxes in the form of daily tasks.

@RicanV:

There are no daily tasks. wrong game bruh

the system doesnt give a fair chance at all. it gives a very very very tiny chance which makes it such as it forces players to buy. which would be fine if the costs were reasonnable but you can spend $200 in boxes per event and still have a huge chance of not getting the 1-2 skins you want. When there are several..you are screwed. Sell them $5 a skin or whatever and people will buy based on quality. Instead they sell based on impulsiveness with timed event and random boxes. its a pure scam.

@Rooten: Extremely lucky this go around. I didn't even know the Cyborg skin for Soldier was a 3k skin and I almost went ahead and purchased Pharrahs just before I opened the second box. I was hesitant because while the Pharrah anniv. skin was cool I didn't think it was 3k worth of coins cool.

I just got into Overwatch and already find the Lootboxes a really bad design choice. For a F2P game these randomized boxes make sense, but in a full price game they are atrocious. I want items, emotes and so on for the characters I actually play!

what they need to do is not lock the items out of the game after an event, just make it so players can no longer get them in regular loot boxes and have to use gold to buy the items.

you honestly aren't. If you were listening, events like Uprising wouldn't be temporary since its a story event. We should be allowed to buy these skins at the very least after the event is over. Even if they are 3000 credits.
