The status of Pacific Rim 2 has been constantly changing over the past few months. While Guillermo Del Toro, director of the original 2014 sci-fi blockbuster, has always insisted that the project was moving ahead, various press stories and its disappearance from release schedules suggested otherwise. However, it has now been reported that the movie has a new director attached to it.
According to Deadline, Steven S. DeKnight has been hired by producers at Legendary Pictures to helm Pacific Rim 2. DeKnight is best known for his work on Netflix's hit Marvel show Daredevil, where he served as executive producer and head writer for its first season. He also created the series Spartacus and has worked on such hit shows as Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Smallville.
Del Toro will remain on board as producer, and yesterday tweeted his approval of the news:
Met w DeKnight and we are all so happy with our choice to take Pac Rim 2to where we know it can go!!

In January, Legendary Pictures was bought by Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group, for a massive $3.5 billion. Although the domestic gross for the first Pacific Rim was disappointing, in China it proved extremely popular. It opened with the sixth biggest gross ever for a Hollywood movie, and ultimately earned more than a third of its entire international gross in China.
Last month, it was also reported that Del Toro was in talks to direct a remake of sci-fi classic Fantastic Voyage. He is also developing a new animated show called Trollhunters for Netflix.
