The news came via producers Legendary Pictures in an announcement about new EVP of Physical Production Herbert W. Gaines. The announcement stated: "Gains' responsibilities will include overseeing production of Legendary's feature film slate including such highly anticipated projects as Pacific Rim: Uprising, Pokemon's Detective Pikachu, and Godzilla: King of Monsters." The Pacific Rim sequel was initially reported as Pacific Rim: Maelstrom in November, after star John Boyega posted an photo of his script folder on Instagram. The Godzilla follow-up, meanwhile, has only been known as Godzilla 2 up to this point.

Pacific Rim: Uprising is currently in shooting in Australia. Some on-set images of Boyega in action were revealed earlier this month--check them out here. The film is directed by former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight, and also stars Scott Eastwood, Zhang Jin, Cailee Spaeny, and Jing Tian.

The film has seen a troubled development over the years, with original director Guillermo Del Toro ultimately handing the reins over to DeKnight, but remaining on board as a producer.

Godzilla: King of Monsters is currently without a director after Gareth Edwards, who made 2014's Godzilla as well as the current Star Wars hit Rogue One, stepped away from the production earlier this year. In October, it was reported that Krampus director Michael Dougherty was in talks to helm the movie. Dougherty is already onboard as co-writer, alongside Zach Shields.

The film will form part of Legendary's ongoing big monster universe. Kong: Skull Island is set for release in March 2017, with Godzilla vs. Kong following in 2020.

Pacific Rim: Uprising hits theaters on February 23, 2018, while Godzilla: King of Monsters arrives on March 22, 2019.
