Paper Mario: Color Splash Embraces Mario's Sillier Side

Above the fold.

Mario's flatter, cuter off-shoot Paper Mario has long proven a welcome foil to his three dimensional counterpart, offering humor, story, and RPG-inspired gameplay in place of pure platforming. The latest installment of the Paper Mario side series, Paper Mario: Color Splash, carries this tradition onto the Wii U, but rather than stick with the back-to-RPG-roots approach of the recent Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Color Splash instead borrows from 2012's Paper Mario: Sticker Star.

Like Sticker Star, Color Splash's semi-turn-based battle system utilizes collectable stickers (or in this case, cards). Different cards produce different results, ranging from straight-forward melee attacks to elaborate cutscenes that inevitably result in your enemies getting pummeled. Unlike Sticker Star, however, Color Splash arms Mario with an especially artistic hammer that both absorbs and distributes paint. If he smashes a colorless object or area, the hammer paints that object, potentially solving a puzzle, triggering an event, or just spawning some coins.

With his hammer and several trusty sidekicks in tow, Mario travels to a mysterious tropical island after receiving an ominous letter containing a folded Toad who's been drained of his color (we'll ignore the fact that, in the context of a world where everyone's made of paper, this is basically like receiving a corpse in the mail). Once he reaches the island, he befriends a talking paint can named Huey, who informs Mario the island houses some kind of terrible color conspiracy. Naturally, it's up to you to unravel the mystery and return color to the island.

If this sounds awfully goofy for a Mario game, well, that's intentional, at least according to associate producer Risha Tabata. ''When we think of what we cannot do in a traditional Mario game, what we came to was, 'Well, definitely humor.' So we wanted to focus on humor as much as possible,'' said Tabata during our behind-closed-doors demo at E3. ''All these different people got together in meetings room and basically very, very diligently and seriously thought of how we could do the stupidest, craziest things possible.''

No Caption Provided

Contrary to this commitment to keeping things silly, Color Splash uses its unique painting hook to imbue its mechanics with unexpected nuance. Much of its strategy stems from the paint gauge that governs most of the gameplay. Basically, you have a finite amount of red, blue, and yellow paint that you use not only to fill in blank spots you find around the world but to power up your cards in combat as well. Certain environmental puzzles require specific colors and most higher-level cards absorb a great of paint, which may force you to make some tough choices when managing your color reserves. Fortunately, you can stay supplied by simply smashing some of the paint from any color-filled object in the world.

The cards themselves demand a bit of strategy as well. According to Tabata, using certain cards in conjunction with one another will produce more powerful results--and you'll have plenty of options to choose from. ''There are tons of different cards in the game,'' said Tabata. ''Obviously Mario is going to be throwing fireballs at some point. There's kind of like a spring jump where you can actually jump a ton of different times on one end.''

In most cases you'll simply activate these cards on your Wii U Gamepad and flick them up to the screen, but certain attacks also include quick-time button presses that trigger bonuses like splash damage if you time them correctly. And as you defeat enemies and collect their little hammer icons, you'll gradually unlock upgrades that further deepen your strategic options in combat. ''As you continue the game, you'll open up more card slots, [and] the amount of paint you're able to store in your hammer will expand,'' Tabata explained.

No Caption Provided

Structurally, Color Splash contains a series of linear levels full of puzzles, traps, NPCs, and enemies. Each ''course,'' as Tabata calls them, also contains one or more stars; the order in which you grab those stars dictates which courses open next, though each of the 30-odd courses stands on its own. ''We kind of focused on trying to have each course have a different feel,'' said Tabata. ''One course might be more focused on battle, but another course might focus more on puzzle-solving. There are definitely different places where you will need to have platforming skills.''

Regardless of what the courses contain, they're bound to be visually splendid. The world bursts with bright colors and packs plenty of clever touches that make use of the paper-based aesthetic, at points looking almost like mixed media. ''The artists spent a lot of time thinking like, 'Maybe we can try this and it'll look really like paper. Maybe we'll have to do this to make it look like paper,''' said Tabata. ''The base of everything is made from cardboard and then on top of that you're layering different types of paper.''

Clearly the Wii U has worked out for Paper Mario visually; now we just have to hope the card system can deliver gameplay that remains engaging and strategic over time instead of devolving in gimmicky Gamepad tedium. We’ll find out when Color Splash launches this October.

What would be cool is if Nintendo teamed up with Square again and did Mario RPG 2 or teamed up with Bioware to make a Mario RPG......

like what if they did a Mario Galaxy RPG? some alien threat kidnaps the princess and one of Bowser's kids so Mario, Luigi and the gang teams up with Bowser and the rest of his kids to find the aliens, get their people back and end the threat once and for all.....think Mass Effect with a fun tone, combat would be closer to Mario RPG but you'd get some powers like the hammer bros hammers or lakitu's ability to rain down spiny's etc......

I loved the Mario and Luigi series (it even has a little bit of an Earthbound feel to it), but Paper Mario games just don't do as much for me. It looks like the series has been going downhill lately according to most reviews.

@drumjod: The Mario and Luigi series are some of the best RPGs ever made. Im glad they arent making both focus on RPG elements. It more fun to be diverse.

@iandizion713: Except Paper Mario is even better. And they just gutted the entire franchise, despite the fact that PM came first. And PM plays so different in the first place anyways. Saying they are anything alike is just ignorant.

But how about they just make Guardians of the Galaxy about Howard the Duck? Because hey, we already have the Avengers which is about a group of Super Heroes trying maintain justice. We don't need two though right? They should make GotG entirely about Howard the Duck going by that logic. Let's just see how well loved it would be. ;-)

This game looks bad. Sticker Star bad. Why oh why can't Nintendo every just stick with what works instead of trying to constantly reinvent the wheel? All everyone wants is a Paper Mario game that follows the footprints of the first game and TTYD.

I like the Paper Mario games, but I'm kinda sad they replaced the original Mario RPG with Paper Mario franchise, they really should have kept them both as seperate franchises. Because Paper Mario only allows you to use Mario, and what made Mario RPG great was that you had full party, and even Bowser was on your team.

I hope they bring back Mario RPG in the future, it was much better than Paper Mario,

@kazeswen: I totally agree. The Mario and Luigi series is a little bit closer to Mario RPG than Paper Mario IMO, but you're right, it's missing some of the best things about it.

@WodPython: It's been a long time since I played either series, so it's possible that I'm thinking more of the aesthetics rather than the gameplay. I do remember that Paper Mario let you choose a 2nd party member at will, while Mario and Luigi just gave you the two main characters.

When it comes to party composition I guess you might be right, but the more I think about it, both games diverged from some of the things that made Super Mario RPG so great.

I definitely enjoyed Mario and Luigi more than Paper Mario though. The Paper Mario world felt less fleshed out to me and I find the whole "paper visuals" concept to be pretty unappealing. The game play was still good though.

I still need to play The Thousand Year Door after I finish the first Paper Mario and I've heard that it's really good.

@davedrummer88: They don't need to bring back the name, still call it Paper Mario, but give us a proper RPG with leveling and a full party, not just Mario with a hammer.

Many people are upset that Color Splash once again, won't be a successor to Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Honestly though, the real question is why Nintendo continues to ignore the fans in favor of their own 'innovative' ways of game development.

Its like, why take away exp, leveling and parties from an RPG in the first place? Blows my mind. Its like taking away bullets in a shooter or the 'jump' command in a platformer.

@uncha1n3d: They should have never replace Mario RPG with Paper Mario. Mario RPG was a much better game, you actually had a party as opposed to just one character.

@kazeswen: Yes, the first two have parties, like I said. TTYD is especially good. It's where characters like Goombella and Bobbery originated. It's really frustrating that Nintendo just went and abandoned that style of game after TTYD. I think maybe because they felt that the Mario and Luigi series kind of filled the turn based RPG niche so the next Paper Marios had to do something different?

@kazeswen: The first two Paper Mario games were proper RPG's just like the Mario & Luigi games. Great stories, parties with lots of colorful characters, turn-based combat, experience and leveling up, all of that stuff. And they were FANTASTIC games, especially The Thousand Year Door. Wit the third game, Super Paper Mario, they kept the great story element, but they turned it into more of a platformer with some RPG elements. It didn't have parties either. It was still good, especially the story, but not as great as the two previous games, which were still quite a bit better. Then with Sticker Star things really went downhill...It wasn't an RPG at all anymore, and it didn't have a great story. And it looks like this new game will be the same...Like most other Paper Mario fans, I just want the series to go back to its RPG roots, and make a great story driven RPG like the first two games. It's a crying shame that the series has descended into some weird platformer thing...

@iandizion713: It has a 75 on MetaCritic (borderline green zone) and a 5.9 User Score. It seems quite a few were displeased with it, rightfully so since it's by far the worst Paper Mario game (and the most watered down).

Is this game going to be a bundle of some kind, amiibo or something?

In Canada this game's price is $89.99 while the standard game price is $79.99. Many WiiU games have been priced slightly below the standard, so this is very odd. It seems too late for it to be a bundle and still not revealed. Another possibility is that all games in Canada are being raised to $89.99 in the near future, but that seems unlikely. Maybe Nintendo just said F it let's try to get $10 more :).

Anyway it's just odd and I thought I'd see if anyone knows more about it.

my problem with sticker star (and i guess color splash, from all the previews and gameplay videos) is that the combat has three fundamental issues:

1- it's entirely useless. there is no reason to want to engage in combat. it delays your progress without offerring anything in return.

2- it's incredibly bland and repetitive. i don't mind the stickers/card system, i mind that every attack has been watered down to a single minigame (press A at the right time) and that 90% of encounters can be solved by just using the same card.

3- beating bosses requires foresight. you need special cards to beat bosses, or else it's literally impossible to beat them. it's already raising a ton of flags if your boss is gated behind a single attack ability (consumable at that), but on top of that there is no foreshadowing that you might need that card for that boss until you die to the boss first. that's terrible, terrible game design.

add that the rather cookie cutter, bland, by-the-books world and characters (oh, it's a toad. and another. and another. and another) compared to the wild and wacky and diverse cast of the first 3 games, and you have managed to make me lose any interest in the game.

@BrunoBRS: Hit the nail right on the head. And these issues bleed into most of Nintendo's other series too. They took a charming series and removed all the flavor it used to have. Nintendo is awful, and has been for about 8 years now.

Personally, I prefer something more than just humor. The first three Paper Mario series set the bar pretty high in terms of story. Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario especially had grand stories for a Mario game. Now, with Color Splash, the story is a lot more watered down to give more space for comedy and charm. I love charm and comedy, but it doesn't hurt to have a little bit of both story and charm, which is what the first three games have done so well, especially Thousand Year Door.
