Patrick Stewart Talks About Why Playing Poop In The Emoji Movie Is So Important To Him

One of actor Patrick Stewart's next roles is the Poop emoji in Sony's upcoming The Emoji Movie. In an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert last night, Stewart made some wonderful jokes about the role.

After Colbert asked Stewart if he was worried the Queen of England might revoke Stewart's knighthood, he joked that she would approve because playing poop has been something he has been building up to his entire life.

"I think she will approve because she will know that, for me, poop has been a lifelong work in progress," he explained.

Colbert then asked if Stewart would be method-acting for the role.

Stewart said playing poop is indeed a "totally internal" process.

"Until it's external," he said. "When I was an infant, it was more spontaneous. In my teens, it took a kind of comedic spurt; it was low-farce, rather than high comedy. But as I matured, so did my output."

The Emoji Movie opens on August 4. In addition to Stewart, the film features the voices of Silicon Valley's T.J. Miller and Saturday Night Live's Maya Rudolph.

"The Emoji Movie unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone's user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression--except for Gene (T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions.

"Determined to become 'normal' like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak. Together, they embark on an epic 'app-venture' through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it's deleted forever."

Stewart will be seen next in the Wolverine movie Logan, which opens in theaters on March 3.
