Paul McCartney Joins Pirates 5 Cast for "Big Set-Piece" - Report
The Beatles singer follows Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards in playing a part in a Pirates movie, apparently.
An interesting development for Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales has emerged. Hollywood news site Deadline reports today that Beatles singer Paul McCartney is joining the cast of the swashbuckling Johnny Depp action movie.
His role was not mentioned in the report, but he will apparently appear in a scene not originally planned. Directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg have elected to add another "big set-piece" scene, and it is here that the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and 21-time Grammy winner will be featured.
If true, McCartney wouldn't be the first British rockstar to appear in a Pirates movie, as Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards played Jack Sparrow's father in At World's End.
According to Deadline, Depp has cited Richards' mannerisms as inspiration for Captain Jack Sparrow. However, it remains to be seen what connection McCartney may have to Depp, Disney, or any of the other people and groups involved in the production of Dead Men Tell No Tales.
This would apparently be McCartney's first film role. It won't be the first involvement with a Hollywood project, however, as he has written music for lots of movies. He was nominated for three Academy Awards, winning one alongside his Beatles bandmates for the 1970 movie Let It Be.
Dead Men Tell No Tales opens on Memorial Day weekend in 2017. It stars Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, alongside Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, while Javier Bardem (Skyfall, No Country for Old Men) plays the bad guy, Captain Salazar. Orlando Bloom will also appear in the movie as Will Turner, making his first appearance in a Pirates movie since 2007's At World's End.
