PC Classic Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Has Multiplayer Servers Again, Including Cross-Play

Here's something cool and unexpected: 2005's Star Wars: Battlefront II now has online multiplayer support after losing the feature years ago. GOG, the online PC store operated by The Witcher studio CD Projekt Red, announced today that multiplayer support has been restored. And that's not all. There is now cross-play support with Battlefront II on GOG and Steam, so that should ideally help players find matches faster.

This long-awaited feature finally brings the entire Star Wars Battlefront II community together, no matter which part of the galaxy you come from, so go ahead and jump into the fray," GOG announced (via PC Gamer). In its own statement on Steam, Disney said about the multiplayer restoration, "Now you can draft your friends to the 501st legion and join up to 64 other players in a heated online battle for control of the galaxy."

In May 2014, GameSpy multiplayer servers shut down, rendering numerous games' online modes unplayable, including Battlefront II's. If you don't already own the game, it's marked down to just $5 right now on GOG. Steam is offering it for $10.

The next Battlefront game is ... Battlefront II. The game launches in November for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, but everyone can try it beginning this week through its open beta. Unlike the first game, the sequel has a single-player campaign, in addition to content and characters from all Star Wars eras.

@Pyrosa: I have seen gameplay videos:

1.it doesn't have command Posts. so as a result it is more linear.

2.you can't exit/enter vehicles on map.

3.with the powerup system, the game will be less skill based compare to Battlefront 2.(in BF 2 at the beginning of the match, everyone is same in the terms of powerups and you can only get powerups if you don't get yourself killed)

Didn't even know the multiplayer for that game was taken down years ago. I only played it for a few short hours a while back, but that was just for the campaign. So that's cool to know, may give the game another shot soon.

I gotta say this game is still a blast even today. Sure some mechanics are outdated but most of it holds up. The graphics aren't pretty anymore but pretty much anyone can play this. I'm having a lot of fun.

@nintendoboy16: You can also do splitscreen Galactic Conquest, which unfortunately was never brought to multiplayer otherwise on both PC/Console. GC for BF 2 is awesome...It's like Empire at War style, but Battlefront.

If you're listening EA, this would be a nice thing to include in future EABF's...That and the ability to actually get in/out of vehicles. -_-

@Prats1993: Hahahahahaha...No. It's not just the campaign that was the problem. EABF is not the same type of game and severely lacking many features of the BF 1/2 classics from Pandemic, let alone Rebellion's Renegade/Elite Squadron games on the PSP.

Now if only those were ported to PC on Steam/GOG...

@Brettsky128: Hopefully by the time EA gets to battlefront 3 we will have galactic conquest back. The 4 staples of battlefront are campaign, instant action, multiplayer and galactic conquest. EA has basically ticked 3 of those boxes with the next game.

@gamingdevil800: Indeed. Galactic Conquest is a must for the next title. Well, that and "Hunt" mode. :P

Beyond the 4 modes, Ground to Space battles has always been the dream. Though I would say them missing the ability to get in/out of vehicles, along with landing them of course, should be introduced. The powerups method was stupid, but spawning as "vehicles" is not any better.
