PC-Only Dirt Rally Announced, And You Can Play It Right Now

Codemasters announces--and releases--the next entry in its racing series today.

Just days after revealing a new Overlord game that will take the series in a controversial new direction, Codemasters has made another announcement for one of its other major franchises. The UK-based publisher on Monday announced--and released--the next entry in the Dirt racing series, called Dirt Rally.

An unfinished version of the game is available now on Steam Early Access for $31.49. Releasing the game on Early Access "scares the absolute crap out of us, but in a good way," Codemasters said on the game's Steam page. "We want you to feel like part of the development team and help us build a better game."

Though Dirt Rally may not be a finished product, it's not lacking for elements and features. Available now in the game are a total of 36 rally stages (Monte Carlo, Greece, and Wales are three examples) and 17 cars, ranging from "1960s classics" to modern vehicles. In the future, Codemasters will add more cars and environments to Dirt Rally, including some circuits from the 2015 FIA World Rallycross Championship.

This content will be free.

"We won't be charging anything for that new content. Regardless of when you join us, you'll have access to everything we produce for our early access period at no extra cost," Codemasters said. "Over the coming months we'll be adding more cars, more tracks, new game modes, and features we haven't even thought of yet--features that you are going to think of and help us build."

In terms of gameplay, Codemasters says Dirt Rally delivers "simulation handling" by way of a new physics model that "simulates everything from the way the surface of the road behaves to limited slip differentials." Dirt Rally also comes with asynchronous events, including daily, weekly, and monthly challenges.

There's also a Team Management feature that lets players hire (and fire if need be) crew members. Online league support is also included for Dirt Rally; players can join up to six leagues. What's more, anyone who buys Dirt Rally on Steam Early Access will receive a free Dirt Rally livery for the Subaru Impreza 1995 car.

Codemasters went on to say that it hopes players will submit their feedback about Dirt Rally so the developers can make changes as a result.

Finally, the developer said it understands not everyone will like the fact that Codemasters has decided to take the Early Access route with Dirt Rally, but hopes fans will support them all the same.

"We know Steam Early Access isn't for everybody; a lot of you are going to be disappointed that you can't play Dirt Rally right now, but we want you to still feel a part of it and where we're going," Codemasters said. "Join in with everything we're doing, watch other players' YouTube videos and livestreams, talk to the people who are playing it, and tell us what you want. You're not excluded from any of this and your thoughts and ideas about what we're up to are just as important."

Dirt Rally will be in Steam Early Access at least through the end of 2015. An official release date for the full, final version of the game has not been announced, however. Meanwhile, Codemasters said it will consider bringing Dirt Rally to consoles if there is enough demand.

This game is hard! It really takes self control to not completely destroy your rig 1/4 the way down a track. The graphics are very pretty too. Just to see what I could do, I cranked everything to max. With my two GTX 680's I scored an average of 54fps At 1080p. That was with vsync on. I would recommend this game to any diehard rally fans for sure. The only thing that's really missing are those trophy girls in bikinis from Cruise'n USA. Which reminds me, Codemasters did say that they wanted our input..

always a red flag when a relatively large dev like codies goes for early access.

With 1 month til release, where's the F1 2015 gameplay?

I'm very excited. Back to the roots, and the fact that I can get in now is very tempting. I support this wholly, especially if funding it helps bring it to the market, where otherwise there might not be enough mass appeal for such a niche game.

@dirthurts: Even tho it's early access, the game very playable with lots of tracks. Haven't had any problems after 5 hrs of play.

Not a good sign when such a big game goes "early access".

+ hello?? its 2015, next-gen blah blah.... WHY!? terrain is still flat polygon?? I'm not even talking about Spintires...

@g4m1ngon: Because, as you pointed out, it's early access. It's not complete yet and probably between alpha and beta in development.

That being said, I agree with the whole thing about such a large game going early access.

@Doomerang@g4m1ngon: It's not hard to understand why. This is built more as a simulator which unfortunately not as many people like. It is risky from a financial outlay in other words .

By allowing this on early access on steam people can suggest modes to add to the game , make changes that may work better and be more appealing . This is great news a company like Codemasters has listened to the community that they want complex rally games like the past and not just the more arcade like approach of the other dirt games.

Don't look at it as a bad thing , look at it as a AAA developer starting to listen to it's audience.

@deviltaz35@Doomerang@g4m1ngon: I don't get it, wouldn't a simulation benefit from more complex terrain?

I never played the first DiRT game, the second one I spent close to a hundred hours playing, the third was mediocre at best, and I won't even mention DiRT Showdown (or whatever it was called). From the trailer, it looks like Codemasters has taken DiRT back to its "roots" and I'm definitely picking this up.

From watching the video the main thing this game needs IMO is terrain deiformation and such.

It seems so oldschool not to have that after a few other racing games have already done it, especially in a rally game where you're constnatly driving through mud and non-paved roads and such.

Having terrain that deiforms under the tires and changes is something that they should definitely add.

At first, I was like 'sigh, another game that's riding on the corpse of Colin McRae...'.

But now, having looked at the article, I see they're taking a less arcade-like, more sim-like approach to this. Sweet. I may actually pick this up.

@Mr-Mindcrime: Most sim players are on pc. I don't see them making money going to consoles but I could be wrong. Gamers might be ready for sim since most of the recent arcade racers have turned out to be trash.

@Mr-Mindcrime@Saidrex: It could , it's not out of Early access until near the end of the year on Steam . It won't even be coming to consoles unless enough people get behind it right now. So if you want it on X1 then tell codies,

Sounds like it's going to be awesome with cars from several eras. However, I'm not going to pay to be a beta tester.

@hammr25: Game is very playable and lots of tracks to occupy your time. Can't wait for hill climb to be unlocked. $30 now or $50 later. Even if they wouldn't finish developing the game, my money was still well spent.

People on here acting like this is a big scam need to understand they are taking a more sim like approach with this Dirt, and they want to test the market to see if the game draws enough attention to warrant a full release on all platforms, consoles traditionally aren't as sim friendly, this way they can develop the game the way the fans want, and this way they can actually make a sim that sells well, just look at sales for Assetto Corsa, no way it would sell that well on consoles.

If bringing the game to Early Access means we get a true rally sim like Codemasters older games, I'm all for it.

@mkeezay22: Yeah console users would expect a game that doesn't have total garbage AI like Assetto Corsa even after it got it's "official" release.
