PC's Age Of Empires: Definitive Edition Gets New Release Date After Delay

The updated and improved version of Microsoft's classic PC RTS is coming in February for $20.

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition will launch on February 20 for PC, Microsoft announced today. The new version of the classic RTS includes "completely" re-done assets, along with multiplayer functionality through Xbox Live (there is also local LAN support).

Also in the Definitive Edition is a new orchestral score, in addition to a re-recorded soundtrack. Additionally, every campaign mission now has voiced narration, while the campaign and scenario editor now lets you create your own custom campaigns. These can then be shared with other players through the Age of Empires website.

Now Playing: Age of Empires Definitive Edition - Gamescom 2017 Trailer

Additionally, new for the Definitive Edition is a new UI, the ability to attack-move, control groups, an idle villagers button, improved destruction, and more.

The $20, PC-only Definitive Edition was originally supposed to launch on October 19, 2017, which was 20 years to the day of the original game's release date in 1997. However, the game was later delayed, due in part to give the team time to "treat the Age of Empires franchise with the respect it deserves," Microsoft said.

Ahead of the Definitive Edition's release in February, Microsoft is expanding the game's multiplayer beta. Starting on January 29, everyone will be able to try it out; you can sign up for a slot here on the Age of Empires website.

Definitive Editions of Age of Empires II and III are also on the way. Additionally, a full sequel, Age of Empires IV, was announced at Gamescom last summer.

@93ChevyNut: I am utterly obsessed with it. It's rock-solid stable, and you're constantly learning each time the ever-increasing waves come to tear down what you've built.

#1 best "quality of life" feature is the repair-all button. Every RTS should have this.

AoE II is still one of my favorite games of all time. I wonder what a definitive version could bring to the table that the HD remaster didn't?

I'll wait for a Steam release, as the MS store is just completely unusable for me.

So it is a remaster and not remake.

What exactly is going to be new in AOE 2 and 3? I have the HD edition of AOE 2 and complete edition of AOE 3. AOE 2 HD wasn't released all that long ago and i think it even had a DLC so what more are they doing? An attack move button would be awesome for AOE 2 as even in the HD edition they didn't add that, though it might be in it now through updates since the DLC (I haven't played it in a long time). I'm still waiting for them to do an HD treatment to star wars galactic battlegrounds.

@drunk_punk: They are updating graphics and sound.

So higher quality sprites for Age 2, built from the ground up. Along with much higher quality audio, probably redone.

Dunno what they'll do with 3 though... Honestly I'd love it if they got Age of Mythology up to Age 3's standards: so much better graphics and the inclusion of physics.

@R4gn4r0k: Awesome, thanks for the reply. I would also really like to see Age of Mythology HD that's probably my second most played game of the Age of series next to AOE2. I'm going to be picking up all 3 of the games again not only because all 3 games are great, but because I want to support RTS games. They have been kind of dying out the last few years and I want to see more. Looking forward to AOE 4 as well with Relic making it...the company of heroes games are great.

@drunk_punk: I couldn't agree more with you. I'm a huge fan of the AOE and COH series, and to me they are the best of what the RTS genre has to offer.

Still a lot of games are coming out in the genre that seemed close to death just a few years ago. I recommend you take a look at:

- Northgard

- Ancestors Legacy

- Iron Harvest

Among those I'm also hugely excited for info on Age of Empires IV and Company of Heroes 3 :D

@xantufrog: that’s what I thought, but they said multiplayer functionality through Xbox Live, which I thought was strange...

@rmokeefe76: hm, maybe it's only sold through the Windows Store/Xbox app, and so the online function will be handled through those servers?

@xantufrog: That's correct. It's a Windows 10 app and it uses XBox Live, although I don't think you need Gold for matchmaking.

I liked 2 much more. Because 2 had actual wall gates and cavalry units were faster compare to 1.

@dorog1995: I like 1 more because of it's setting: making your way from simple caveman to becoming a major civilization like the Greeks. The warfare in that timesetting also interests me way more.

Of course 2 has many improvements, and it's a lot more popular.

One of the major improvements in 2 I very much liked is that every nation has unique units now :)
