People Are in Line for Star Wars: The Force Awakens Already

"The line awakens!"

With ten days still to go before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, people are already lining up.

The New York Times reports that more than 100 people are queued up at Hollywood's famous Chinese Theater in Los Angeles. An Australian woman at the front of the line, Caroline Ritter, said to a couple who stopped to snap a photo, "Yes, we still have a very long time to wait. No, we're not crazy."

Ritter and the rest got in line on Saturday, December 6, which means by the time the movie opens on the evening of December 17, they will have been in line for some 12 days. As Times asks, why would you stand in line when you can reserve a ticket online?

"At night you freeze and in the daytime you cook, but you come for the camaraderie and the chance to be a part of cinematic history," one man in line, Erik Murillo, said. "Besides, there are traditions to be upheld."

The Chinese Theater, which is now officially called TCL Chinese Theater IMAX, was one of only around 30 theaters that screened the original Star Wars movie in 1977. That was because distributor Fox reportedly had some reservations about the movie's mainstream appeal.

One person in line has a sign that says "The line awakens!" In addition, the theater has implemented some rules, including that tents need to be set up by midnight and taken down by 6 AM. What's more, a system has been put in place to allow people to drop out of the line for short periods of time (for bathroom breaks, etc.) and still retain their place.

On top of that, everyone has their own name badge, a special website dedicated to the line has been established, and a charity partner--Starlight Children's Foundation--has signed on.

Are you planning to see The Force Awakens? Let us know in the comments below.

What ever happen to first come first serve ? Lines shouldn't be allowed more then a few hours to start time. Just for a movie ? Come on now. I"m going the morning after release. If i don't get in, too bad, i can wait.

ME and some of my die hard nerdy friends have midnight tickets for our local theater, but I plan to see the movie that next week early in the morning, probably on a Tuesday - by myself- hopefully in a mostly empty theater, to really enjoy the movie.

I wonder if people have saved up their vacation time for this?

Me? I have too many games in my backlog to justify throwing away two weeks of my life standing in line.

"The line awakens!"

Really Eddie? Wow that's just sad. Anywho, down to it. People are losers and this movie should've been made 20 years ago while the actors were still relatively young and not the geriatric messes you see today.

I can't believe people are able to take this much time off for a movie..... How do you justify all that time off work to literally do nothing until a movie releases? All of this for a franchise that supports incest.

That is unsanitary, if I was the owner of that theater I would not allow any of these stinky bums into my establishment.

Geez, I was going to wait a couple of weeks after the movie came out. Looks like that might be a really good idea with this bunch of crazies.

Standing in line for two weeks non-stop to see a movie is crazy to me. People wasting time, money and their life over some dumb film have serious issues. At the end of the day, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is just another film to me but not to these brainwashed plebeians who worship fictional human beings and give their life savings to conglomerates as a way to show how worthless they are to humanity.

Rant over...

12 days is a bit much. But whatever, if they enjoy it and are going to have fun then I say more power to them. Hell, I took a week of work off for Black Ops/Fallout. I am super freaking excited for this movie though! I've had my son watch a couple Star Wars movies with me so far and we'll have all 6 watched by the 17th (he's only 5 so its all new to him). Can't wait!

Life is too short to spend 2 weeks in line for a movie. I love Star Wars too but I'm gonna wait 2 weeks to avoid the lines.

Weird stuff.

Doesn't affect me in the least bit. If they have the time and resources more power to them.

Lot of people may look at gamers and wonder how a person could amass so much time in an fps game or rpg.

At least what they're doing is safe as opposed to the other stuff going around nowadays.

Don't love anything that much to do something like this. People seem to have too much time on their hands. Don't they have jobs, families, etc?

I reserved two seats online yesterday (for the 19th) and I live in a 3rd world country. I thought reserved seats were a norm in America.

@fastica: They are for regular screenings. The first premier and special events tend to be first come first served though, so there is always a chance you will miss out.

Yes, you are crazy. People who set and wait in line for days just to see a movie have an obvious mental obsession. Nothing wrong with enjoying things, but taking it WAY too far has become a social norm.

To each it's own. Some people do this for movies, some do it for games, some for concerts...

...and some people pre-order games to get that "amazon exclusive useless cosmetic DLC"

Come on, people! What are you doing? Instead of wasting your time you could have paid some homeless people to queue for you. They were going to be there anyway but this way they make some money.

People are stupid.

I remember way back when COD was fun I went to a midnight release. I got there about 2 minutes before they open he door. Me and a friend were very last in line of about 50 people it seemed. You could hear this couple bragging to someone way behind them in line about being up there for about 6 hours waiting and that they were first.

It took under 20 minutes for me and my friend to get through the line and get our game and these dimwits wasted 6 hours of their life.
