Peter Molyneux says working at Microsoft was like taking antidepressants

Fable creator describes Microsoft as a "big supertanker of safety"; says he wanted out so he could push himself to be more creative.

Peter Molyneux quit Microsoft in March 2012 and now it appears we know why. In a new interview the Fable creator said working within the walls of Microsoft limited his creativity because the company was a "big supertanker of safety."

"I left Microsoft because I think when you have the ability to be a creative person, you have to take that seriously, and you have to push yourself," Molyneux told Gamasutra.

Trying new things and being highly iterative is easier to do for indies, Molyneux, using a sinking life raft as an example of how indies rarely feel comfortable while big companies like Microsoft often do.

"And pushing yourself is a lot easier to do if you're in a life raft that has a big hole in the side, and that's what I think indie development is. You're paddling desperately to get where you want to go to, but you're also bailing out," he added. "Whereas if you're in a big supertanker of safety, which Microsoft was, then that safety is like an anesthetic. It's like taking antidepressants. The world just feels too comfortable."

Molyneux is currently leading development on Populous spiritual successor Godus at his UK studio 22Cans. For more on Godus, check out our interview with Molyneux below.

Thank you Mr. Molyneux, you've fixed Fable III so I can now run it on Windows 8.1! It may not be the greatest game of all time but it is still a very good game. I salute you!

<< LINK REMOVED >> With that retarded argument you might as well call sport critics/reporters useless since they don't do sports tenth as good as the players they are judging or don't even do sports at all.

Oh dear Peter... What will tomorrow's headline grabbing comment be? After this one, it just feels like you are not trying any longer, but don't worry... I will help you out buddy. Here pick anyone of these if you like..?

  • I tried to buy Oculus Rift for a tenner.
  • I once reached orgasm by sitting on the Xbox controller for 10 minutes by accident... Honestly!
  • Fable was based on a true story.
  • I sold my Xbox One for some weed yesterday.
  • Godus is better than sex, and it is also based on a true story.
There you go Pete, (can I call you Pete?), there you go, you silly person... Five new headlines, all just for your use. Now you can put some effort into those headline grabbing sh!te that you like for tomorrow.

You are welcome.

Just shut up already!! I am no fan of MS, but this guy has long had a record of over-hyping his games and then failing to deliver on the promises long before Lionhead was brought by MS!! Quite blaming everything on others when clearly YOU are the PROBLEM!!

I am wondering why you (Gamespot) are giving this man so much time lately. I don't suppose it's anything to do with a "special" arrangement that involves him giving you exclusive interviews in exchange for exposure of his awful game, Godus, is it?

The fact that you gave such a glowing review of the early access version of Godus says it all ...

In this case I agree with Mr Molyneux; since Gears of War on the 360, there have been very few new big budget franchises for Microsoft systems because of their strict policy on focusing on games which make the most money, rather than taking risks to deliver refreshing experiences. Hopefully they'll fix that soon with Xbox One.

With what Fable 3 turned out like, I believe him. But I feel if he truly loved that series he would of bailed on it rather than stay for the ever present money.

Guy makes god games because he has a god complex. Screw this guy. Take all the money spent on his ego projects and give it to Ken Levine or Sid Meier. Preferably the latter so we can get a Civ V style reboot of Alpha Centauri.

Black and white 3 peter, that premise and idea for a game is genius. I love the idea of having a command and conquer style game with gods that changes if you do evil things or good things to your people, its an epic concept. Such a great idea and has yet to be fully realized.

"When you have the ability to be a creative person...."? Isn't that everyone? Or is this guy so self centred he thinks he is the only one who can be creative?

In a follow up statement, Molyneux resents his parents for giving him food and shelter as a child instead of kicking him out in the street to learn harsh life lessons

Although Petey Pete is now a has been and looked at as the Nutty Professor. It is still great to see him or anyone of recent value to speak truth about companies they were associated with. Yeah it maybe goofy in appearance but is Noteworthy stuff to remember.

You normally don't get this type of public ridicule from ex-employee's that had such a big stage on gaming. They usually bought out in some type of severance package to keep quite and not bad mouth a company as big as EA, Sony or MS.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I agree with your point, but I don't think Peter was "ridiculing" Microsoft in any way. He was just pointing out the fact that the stress of Indie development drives Devs to work harder and working at a big company like Microsoft can be more comfortable yet creatively limiting. That really doesn't seem like an insult at all. Microsoft does still strive for creativity in their games but it doesn't necessarily show as much as Indie creativity does.

<< LINK REMOVED >> MS record on innovation & creativeness in 1st party games has been lackluster at best. Bungie's Halo was a accident that transferred into a goldmine, and Epic's GOW got what it deserved. I was speaking in general.as Petey also badmouthed EA. It is what it is and appreciate your response. (Although the use of anti-depressants is a drug which means he's saying the MS heads had major depressive disorder and other conditions, including dysthymia, anxiety disorders, obsessiveness) LOL

If by "creativity" you mean "tapping a screen a few thousand times for nothing," then yes, Molyneux is a very creative developer. No other developer would have had the creative audacity to make tapping your finger a billion times into a game. When I do it anywhere else, people yell at me to stop tapping my finger.

Also, I'm really hoping for a board game version of that game. I imagine that would be pretty simple to make....
