Petroglyph unveils new MMOG

Universe at War: Earth Assault developer teams with new publisher True Games for free-to-play, microtransaction-based, mythology-themed action RPG/strategy hybrid Mytheon.

Last August, Las Vegas-based developer Petroglyph unintentionally made headlines. The shop, which traditionally specialized in such real-time strategy games as Star Wars: Empire at War and Universe at War: Earth Assault, posted a job listing for a massively multiplayer online role-playing game designer.

The position's duties were described in detail, with the hire being "responsible for understanding, refining, maintaining, and disseminating the game design vision, game design, mission building, gameplay balancing, and game proposal development of a massive multiplayer online game."

With such unambiguity, the question wasn't if Petroglyph would announce an MMOG, but when: Today, as it turns out. This afternoon, the company unveiled Mytheon, a new project that will focus on the same Greek mythology that inspired God of War. According to the developer the game "uniquely combines the best elements of action, strategy and RPG gameplay with a heavy emphasis on collectability and combat."

"Emphasis" indeed: Mytheon will be free to play, getting its income solely from microtransactions. Gameplay will center on a variety of "power stones" that can be used to cast spells or summon minions. In real-time combat, the game's three character classes will each specialize in a different type of stone, which presumably must be purchased a la cards in Magic: The Gathering (without the physical cards, obviously.) Mytheon will also feature more traditional MMORPG elements such as player versus player, group raiding, and social networking services in addition to solo play.

Published by Orange County-based start-up True Games, which is controlled by Indian multimedia company UTV Software Communications, Mytheon will go online in fall 2009. Though no specific territories were mentioned in the announcement, the teaser site for the game has region-specific editions for the United States, Spain, Turkey, Germany, and France. It should be noted that the site also references Norse mythology, with allusions to the Egyptian pantheon appearing Mytheon's press materials.

Micro-Transaction games are a joke. If you want money to equal success, go buy a nintendo, and a game genie, and have at it. YOU WIN. Oh and I agree this game sounds decent and/or great! Yeah! the gameplay and progression sounds awesome! I mean the classes sound cool and..wait.. no.....theres no info out. So How can you say this sounds good? For all you know its glorified rock paper scissors... Come on people. Have some...standards..jeez. I've probably got higher quality games on my cell phone then this PoS will turn out.

Well, I was greatly disappointed by World of Warcraft and it's turned me away from subscription based MMORPG's, but since this one is free, I'll more than be willing to give it a shot.

I don't see a good market for MMO's anymore, whoever plays games and are into MMO's have found one and are going to stick to it whether this game'll be superior or not, in other words, all the top MMO's have beaten others to the market and no one else is going to get a piece until the popular MMO's slowly die and something NEW as in NEW NEW comes along.

While details are obviously sketchy at this point, I'm inclined to believe this will be a reasonably good game. Petroglyph was formed by ex-Westwood employees (the same Westwood responsible for the "Command & Conquer" series). While both Westwood's and Petroglyph's strengths are certainly RTS and not MMO, I have never felt that the QUALITY of their games was exceptional (in the late '90s, I was either playing a Blizzard RTS or a Westwood RTS). I've never heard of True Games so I'll reserve judgment but I'm again willing to be open-minded because of my respect for their partner, Petroglyph (for reason stated in the previous paragraph). I intend to be keeping close tabs on this game over the coming months.

"oh boy...the formula of runescape...and we all know what a sucess that is for the 5-12 year old age group...whoopie. Hey, when will we actually get a serious contender to WoW? I'm actually interested to see if anyone has the balls to do it because we all know the only company that can out do WoW is WoW's creators, blizzard. Please prove that false...Not that I hate WoW since I mean my avatar is a draenei but I really would like to see some competition. It's healthy for both the MMO industry and you'll see great things come from WoW and the "WoW contender" to compete for subscribers." Biowares new starwars mmorpg will p'wn WoW

stangen Posted Dec 3, 2008 2:06 pm ET "free-to-play, microtransaction-based, mythology-themed action RPG/strategy hybrid Mytheon." What the hell does that mean in english? Basically its gunna be like Maple Story and others out there like it, play for free but if you want the really kewl stuff you will have to purchase in-game money or buy trading cards with codes for ingame items and such.

"free-to-play, microtransaction-based, mythology-themed action RPG/strategy hybrid Mytheon." What the hell does that mean in english? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From their teaser site: "Mytheon is micro-transaction based, meaning there is no charge to download and no monthly fee required to play. However, there will be a variety of purchase options, such as double EXP potions, exclusive clothing, and premium bundle packages available for those who wish to further enhance their experience. A complete list of micro-transaction items will be available as we get closer to the launch of the game." So you basically get a barebones version of the game for free and then pay for everything extra with real $$. I guess it would appeal to people who have more money and less time than traditional MMO gamers. I would say it's worth at least watching, simply because it's not advertising itself as the usual: Orc, Elf, Grind, Grind, Grind, Lather, Rinse, Repeat, $14.99 MMORPG Formula. Whether it goes anywhere or not remains to be seen.

I can understand that these days MMORGs is where the money is at and it is a hot genre. Though I know that MMORGs cater to a specific crowd and I dont know if, unless somehow the days magically get longer, if the WoW'ers can have enough time in their already hectic schedule for another MMORG. I mean variety might be what they need in their pale, greasy unwashed lives... well that, sunlight, the occasional bath and relations with the opposite sex. Flame and Downvote all yall want, dont bother me none cause deep down its true.

Sounds cool. Mytheon is a Free to download game being done by someone in the US and not Korea. For me that's a releif as I know it's not going to look like every other Asian MMO out there. From the action/strategy/RPG note, I'm hoping it looks more like Diablo than anything else. I look forward to this game. I can't really **** yet being that it is free to play, if anything I'll try and stop playing if I don't like. No harm, no foul. I wish I had that luxury with WOW.

Cobra5 hit the nail on the head: "microtransactions suck... whoever pays more is stronger. Not my idea of balance." People always say, "But you don't have to buy the stuff if you don't want!" Yes, that's true, but then good luck competing with anybody else. It's like showing up to a Magic the Gathering tournament with a deck built from 3 booster packs and playing against a guy who dumped hundreds of dollars into his cards to get a powerful deck. Yeah, that's fun.

This game will be more of a money sink hole than WoW. Yes, WoW has a 15 dollar monthly fee. At least I don't have to pay in real life cash for items in the Auction House. Game Over, Petroglyph.

@warrner11: I saw you mention Archlord and you lost every ounce of credibility with that. Archlord was terrible, as is just about any other free to play MMO. They are all based on the same Korean template. Click to move, insane grindfests. They might be free, but there's a very good reason why. If you can't see how pay to play MMO's like WAR and WoW are better than the generic free to play garbage well then I don't really know what else to say.

@ Wezker619... are u serious??? A free mmo kicks more @$$ the WoW. Its the fact that its free that most people wont hesitate to at least try it; and if they find the game to be what the like they'll keep on it and will start churnin out cash for the sweet items in the premium shops most free mmo's come with. Archlord is doin much better now as F2P then it did when in was P2P cause its got all those nice items in micro-trans shops. There are even some out there I'd be willing to pay for if they went already free. Free with premium shops should be the way all future mmo's should be......look at Guild Wars.

When you pay by microtransactions, there simply isn't any way the game is not going to suck. That's just the nature of the beast, and it's been proven time and time again.

I enjoy playing MMORPG's, I do feel that developers are going too far with each company releasing at least 1 MMO. But I do feel there are other genre of games that are saturating the market as well. Such as Guitar Hero, and Rock Band style games. I do love Guitar Hero 3, and enjoyed Rock Band quite a bit. But their releasing entire new games with content they can release in an online update. I do see a lot of people complaining about this particular genre the most however. Positively stating your opinion is a good way to post your criticism. Shouting, and whining, "Worst games ever zomg!!! RUINING MARKET!" isn't a great way of speaking your mind.

You know, what's sad is when people say "I'm not paying monthly to play a damn game," then turn around and say, "A free to play online game? It'll be crap since it's free." What do you people want?? A monthly fee of $3.00 at most? Maybe a yearly fee of $50, like XBL? It's like trying to come up with a answer to the "what do you want to eat" question when your surrounded by other people who want to know the same damn thing. Nobodies going to suggest anything, they're just going to go with whatever somebody chooses, and no matter what, youever made the decision is going to feel very uncomfortable.

dude really tho I agree with comments below me, enough with the MMOs, they are saturating the market and are gonna cost in other developing game markets, Online play is good, but to pay continuously to play is a stupid notion that seems to be working because some people really don't know what could be different

1. Another MMO, seriously, there are just too many. There's a reason people stick to WOW, even if a "better" MMO comes out, there are just so many. Until the next "clear winner" shows up, people aren't going to jump. - 2. Free-To-Play, and yet, with this "stones system", I can't help but think that being competitive is going to mean tossing a few bucks their way every now and again, or that spending money will mean faster progress.

i'd be excited if i felt petro could do i good job. om not because i know they cant. after universe at war and the fact the the game still will not work correctly (first it had the illegal game exit now it has the black screen at the end of the novus campaign) they have much to prove before i play another of their games, even if it is free. fix UAW then make this game.

Free to play... except you will get completely butt-stuffed by players who have bought all the extra items. Really, micro-transaction are an interesting paradox: if the items for sale are balanced, there's no point in having them, but if they're not balanced, the f2p players get slaughtered and it's not fun for them.

Well, that's nice. There's just one too many MMORPGs. If you actually look it up, there's rarely any MMORTSs. Nice to see that someone's giving it a try, though the micro-transaction is questionable.

jrabbit99- "a la Magic: The Gathering" does not mean "you need to buy magic cards to play" The article is trying to compare this power stone/summoning system in the game to buying cards. You'll buy new spells and stones via micro-transactions...no actual Magic: the Gathering cards involved....though that would be pretty awesome so you're probbaly still on to something there haha

interesting, so will you have to own Magic cards to play? Either way, buying $15 of Magic cards a month will probably be enough to do well, and at that price its the same as WoW, so why not play it instead?
