Phil Spencer Has Played "Quite A Bit" Of Elden Ring, Calls It Miyazaki's "Most Ambitious Game"

Phil Spencer has played the Dark Souls director's next game, and he's very impressed by it.

Elden Ring is the next game from Hidetaka Miyazaki, director of Dark Souls and Bloodborne, and fans are desperate for more information. Even so much as a brief mention has been enough to get Miyazaki's fanbase aflutter--so the news from GameSpot's recent interview with Xbox boss Phil Spencer might be enough to send them into a frenzy.

When asked how much of Elden Ring he had seen, Spencer told GameSpot's Tamoor Hussain, "I've seen actually quite a bit. I've played quite a bit."

Now Playing: Phil Spencer Talks Xbox, Halo, Elden Ring, And More

While Spencer can't say too much, he gave us enough to set the hype high. "As somebody who's played all of Miyazaki's games over at least the last decade, this is clearly the most ambitious game that he's done," he says. "I mean, I love his games, but seeing some of the gameplay mechanics stuff that he's tackling, he and the team are tackling this time, of the setting, working with another creator in terms of story. I love it."

The other creator Spencer mentions is, of course, Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin, who has worked on the story for the upcoming open world game. It's also supposedly going to have more open-ended areas than is typical in a From Software game. They typically have branching paths, but use a series of passages and locked doors to guide your progress.

According to Spencer, Elden Ring is Miyazaki "expanding his horizons." He also says that leaves the room while Spencer plays. "I think that's because I'm a bad player, and then when he comes back we'll have a conversation about things that I think," he says. "He's so passionate about what he does. It's one of the things I just love about getting to work with him on some of these games and seeing them come to our platform."

A release date has not been set for Elden Ring yet. It was announced during Microsoft's 2019 E3 press conference, but it's not yet clear which systems the game will release for. At the time, it appeared like it was coming to Xbox One and PS4. With the Xbox Series X and PS5 now in the wild, that may not be the case. However, Dark Souls 2 did launch on Xbox 360 and PS3 after the newer systems were already available.

Elsewhere in the same interview, Spencer told us about why we shouldn't be worried by staff turnover at Halo Infinite developer 343 Industries.

One of Miyazaki's earlier games, Demon's Souls, has been remade for the PS5 launch. GameSpot was not given code early enough to review the game ahead of launch, but you can check out our Demon's Souls early review impressions.

The Xbox Series X and S are available now. Check out GameSpot's coverage of Microsoft's new machines below:

This may be the game that brings back RPGs to the Xbox. This past gen pretty much only had cross platform rpgs to play. The Xbox 360 had so many great first party rpgs it isn't even funny. Be good to see Xbone get some great RPGs back in the mix. Now, if they would just make another Lost Odyssey I'd be happy.

I never liked the Souls games, I always wished they had combat like Mount and Blade. Where it fees analogue and natural, the Souls games are animation based and pressing a button and watching the action.

@Terrorantula: Ummm, as a M&B player as well that's exactly what M&B does. M&B is also animation based. In fact, unless you're playing a VR title, most combat mechanics in any game are animation based. Some are more fluid than others. M&B and Kingdom Come are practiced and learned but so are the Dark Souls games or The Surge games. Actually, if you really want to talk about it, M&B's animations are more "over the top" animations than any Dark Souls game is.

LOVED Demon's Souls. LOVED all the Dark Souls games. LOVED Bloodborne (even though I can rarely land the parry mechanic that is almost critical to the game hehe).

Was heartbroken to learn DS3 would be the last in the Dark Souls games, I love the universe and lore they created.

Was thrilled to see this new IP (Elden Ring), cannot wait for this. Definitely high up on my anticipation list.

Do we know yet who's actually publishing this game? Is From finally going the self-publishing route?

@doodoflife: I don't see that happening. From Software has a lot of influence in their properties. They wouldn't even allow Sony to publish Demon's Souls in the States because they wanted to make it easier for players. That left a lot of money on the table and why Atlus ended up publishing it, otherwise it would have been money left on the table.

@doodoflife: i don't think they can. Well, i think they can, but you can already pre order for ps4, so if they cancel now they will collectively piss off half the FromSoft fan base. And I don't think they really want to do that.

Anyone who is a fan of Demons Souls or Bloodborne is probably counting down the days until this launches already.

I know I am!

Truth be told, I haven't played any of his games. Limited time for gaming and so limited levels of patience for alot of dying/repeating things designed to be extremely or even frustratingly difficult hehe

However, I'm a big Martin fan, so this has me seriously intrigued.

@esqueejy: I rage quit Demon soul when it first came out very early (dragon bridge). I rage quit bloodborne very early (village people bonfire area). I gave bloodborne a second chance and now it is like my #2 favorite game of all time. I don't like the Demon Soul LARP simulator but like the bloodborne faster action. The best weapons are in the DLC so get that with the game so you can get it early. Bloodborne's lovecraft style was nice too.

@xophaser: I'm more of an old school D&D type....could never get into Call of Cthulhu stuff hehe. To be fair though, I'd probably try Sekiro before the other two, although realistically it will probably be Elden Ring I try first when it comes.

@esqueejy: Maybe keep an eye out for a sale copy of Dark Souls 1 Remastered this month, if you want to get the "feel" for 4-6 hours without committing to getting all the way through the hard parts.

You only need to know 2 things:

1. The whole series is about locking on and NOT button-mashing. One block or one attack press equals one action, and likewise one dodge-roll to any direction followed by an attack is exactly two button presses.

2. From the tutorial level, you want to go UP the hillside stairs into the town, carefully.

You'll easily get through the first whole town with a small handful of deaths (as well as wise "retreat and spend those souls to upgrade" a-ha moments), and probably stop at the dragon & his bridge.

It'll give you enough "flavor" to understand what all us fans are raving about.

@Pyrosa: Yeah...I'm generally a pretty excellent gamer (if I do say so myself hehe), so I have no doubt I could play or even master the games, but even pretty excellent gamers die a lot in these games....I mean, the game is designed to make sure that happens and to have a steep learning curve. I could climb that curve, no doubt: it's just the level of frustration I know I'd feel doing it that keeps me away lol

@esqueejy:

The Souls games aren’t really that “hard”. It’s all about memory and pattern recognition. Enemies always spawn in the same spot and behave the same way. Knowledge and experience make the game easier. What starts as the most brutal game ever on your first play through becomes your Sunday afternoon casual go-to game after a couple of play-throughs.

@el_swanno: I understand that. Repeated failure while learning the curve and the patterns is how they're designed to be played. All I'm saying is that it's the repetition loop that becomes a source of frustration for me when I have limited time to play and just want to relax while actually progressing through content. I'm by no means attacking the games or even saying that I find them too hard. It's more of a gameplay style observation.
