Phil Spencer Suggests Perfect Dark Reboot Helps Xbox Lineup Become Less Male-Oriented

In a recent interview, the head of Xbox said that the upcoming Perfect Dark reboot is important in part because the series has a female protagonist.

We don't know a lot about the upcoming Perfect Dark reboot for Xbox Series X, but Phil Spencer has now said that the fact that the series features a female protagonist is important for the console. In a recent interview, the head of Xbox told IGN Unlocked that details are thin on the ground for the reboot as of yet, but also said that main character Joanna Dark offers "a lot of modern opportunities" compared to the console's "men-with-guns" lineup.

"I think it's awesome that for us we can focus on a female protagonist in our lineup, we don't have a lot of that in our our first-party," he said. "I think Joanna offers a lot of modern opportunities that I love to see the team focusing on, having a strong protagonist..."

Now Playing: Remembering Perfect Dark - A Sci-Fi Fueled Goldeneye

The new Perfect Dark game is being developed by The Initiative, which is a studio created specifically for the purpose of rebooting the series as its first project. The reboot is led by Darrel Gallagher, who formerly worked as the studio head for Crystal Dynamics during its reimagining of Tomb Raider.

It's pretty clear that The Initiative's game will serve as a new starting point for the franchise, but we don't know if it'll serve as some sort of official sequel to the N64 or Xbox 360 entries, or perhaps just reinvent the series entirely. Earlier this year, one of the first employees of The Initiative left the studio after two years to join Insomniac Games. It's also worth noting that while Marcus Fenix's son JD Fenix served as the main character of Gears of War 4, Gears 5 had players control Kait Diaz instead.

They keep wanting to break into the female market with games created for males. Most girls have no interest in video games. Period. I have tried and tried to get my wife into games and she just curls her nose at it. She'll play the Simms, or Among Us or some other party game but that is situational, she would have as much or more fun playing a board game. They need to stop this and let it go. Or better yet hire some damn women to create a game "THEY" want to play instead of forcing experienced devs to make something for a market that doesn't want it.

If it is appropriate & not something force fed to you down your throat, then it makes sense. But if you are going to swing your waaahooooman salami at us while telling us that it will be perfect when it fits a waaahoooooman, then no thanks! I would much rather watch Richard Simmons then!

I don't know what's more hilarious - the cringe-inducing title of this article, or the comment section actually eating it up in anger.

Female lead characters was never an issue unless they are forced into games just coz of sake of it!
Everybody was/is ok with Tomb Raider,Hellblade,HZD,Metroid etc...
That reminds me of...i bet ones was surprised to see that the bike rider in Segas Super Hang On,after finishing the hardest stage (America),puts down the helmet and reveals her identity :-)
While you are at it Phil, lets greenlight ReCore 2?

At the end of the day, this is the sequel i have been waiting for over a decade. This is also the sequel i wanted to see the most of any sequels of any franchises, so no matter what, i will be getting this on day one.

What i am worried about is that PD is yet another microsoft game that is shown at the very beginning of a generation, but is released near the very end, with a possiblity of a Crackdown 3 2.0 happening.

The original PD is still in my top 3 games ever. THE game that got me into fps. I don't give a flying crap if the character i am playing as (not to mention that we're playing a first person game and can't even see our character outside of cutscenes) is male or female. What i care about is its dialogue and just how well written the character is. So stop focusing on the fact that its a lady and create a cool ass character like Arthur Morgan from RDR2.

Im fine with Female Protags. We all are..

Howabout you(Phil) worry about the incompetent (female)

running/ruining Halo..

The Damage Bonnie did to the Halo brand was DEVASTATING,.

It's similar to what Disney did to StarWars..The 1st StarWars sequel movie was always going to break records regardless of the mediocrity of it.. Halo 4 was the same way and the record breaking sales showed as much..

Halo 5 was imo the biggest failure as it didnt capture a new generation of gamers. Again the weirdness happens and BonnieRoss gets award after award yet her company only has the Halo IP... The StarWars sequels shoudla made billions not millions and Halo was sitting on top when Bungie left it.

I have no hype for New Halo. i'd probably skip it if not for Gamepass.

Whatever whatevs...

**Perfect Dark was soo good.(original) and the follow up was pretty good even though it wasnt as epic as original..

I surprisingly own two copies of the 360 version in a cool CE looking case with a price tag of $1.29 lol Musta been my early days of buying games err collecting games..

Is one a collector who buys only games one plans to play? Unlike MetalJesus who buys any & everything?

*itching to finally get a new Parasite Eve, get this instead. Look, regardless of the genre of the protagonists, game has to be good, and last game was a clear example of devs failing to modernize a cult game for modern audiences. Busted level design, busted multiplayer (at least competitive wise), the beloved laptop being a bore to use now, etc.

Damn as I realize, Xbox doesn't have a female IP lead. But, will a new perfect dark be any good?

Because Rare has been on a shit strike since Microsoft got them. Killer instinct isn't even in ads anymore, Sea of thieves is still garbage, we don't have a new Conker or Banjo, and I can't remember the name of that one game you stopped supporting where you made video game levels.

"I think it's awesome that for us we can focus on a female protagonist in our lineup, we don't have a lot of that in our our first-party," he said after 20 years and 4 console generations. And they couldn't even bother to try coming up with a new female protagonist, they had to dredge the depths to find one they already owned and can just reboot and bank on nostalgia.

make a good game

perfect dark zero 2 will be just embarassing and seem like pathetic virtue signaling. and i liked it because it had 4 player splitscreen with bots. the gameplay and story was trash but with some pals against bots it was alright at times when good games like halo boiled down to "you killed me, you killed me, this is unfair and boring lets stop"

also the n64 perfect dark is also trash now after combat evolved. precise aiming and acrobatic movement is a joke althoug i give it time period points. pdz is simply embarassing after halo, doom3, r6 and many others showed how to do it

Ah yes, because your female audience have consistently been shown to enjoy shooters, right?

Don't worry, Microsoft will be back to pushing men-with-guns in a few months. There's Halo to sell.

@Thanatos2k: Time for that to change! I was schooling my college buddies in PD before pwning n00bs was cool!

In all seriousness (though I was being serious there), having awesome female protagonists that are just cool because they're cool doesn't hurt in getting more females into these games. It doesn't hurt the genre to have cool characters that happen to be female, either. So, win-win by all counts, really.

As for me, I was destined to be a gamer. But my love for gaming exploded when I reached the end of Metroid to discover that Samus was a female all along, and it just didn't matter. Samus was a kick ass bounty hunter who just happened to be female instead of the expected male and I don't care if it was seen as a gimmick or just as a "haha gotcha" from the developers, it had a significant impact on me especially since I probably wasn't even 10 yet.

Sure, representation might not matter to lots of gamers, but it can make a big impact with others.

@Thanatos2k: most girls go for the more social aspect of gaming anyway. They're into MOBAs and MMORPGs, games that are geared to be social experiences, instead of game more introverted in their contents and their worlds, like Bioshock and some horror games. Well, sometimes there are exceptions with this last genre.

He never said less male-oriented. He said that he is happy to have more female protagonists. You can always change people's words to make them sound negative. He pointed out it as a positive point, not a negative point.

@zyxe: dang good post dude.

I had such a blast with original PD..

Was that NG4? I thought it was Gamecube.

I forget now what was what. WHich one i played Res Evil4 on and Goldeneye..

My roomate(now wife) and i played vs mode split screen Goldeneye style for a long minute for sure.. Good times 10/10

i wonder if the Gamecube & N64 can be pretty'd up with component cable or that expensive OSSC..

i was for sure impressed with how epic the PS2 & ESP the Original Xbox looks w/ a HD Monster component cable hooked up to a 1080p TV.. i thought for sure i was gonna haveta get a Sony Trinitron.. good luck finding that Xbox hd component cable though.. it's price gouged at $100 on ebay everytime. <but worth it!!

Perfect Dark was one of the top 5 games on the N64. It improved on Goldeneye's controls (who didn't love getting to hold down a button and select a weapon instead of having to cycle through them all???), had a far out story, fun weaponry and was a total blast to play. I love the ability to tailor PVP matches so easily. too.

I tried PDZ and couldn't stand more than an hour of it. What a disappointment. I'm with the video guy, I hope the newer one is more of a true sequel than that game. Unfortunately, I think the need for all FPS to have massive PVP online modes kill the allowance of creativity you can have with a single player/co-op game because people will exploit everyone and while that's awesome in a campaign, it's not great in PVP with a large group of mostly people you don't really know.

Oh, and for the record, screen looking is unavoidable in couch-lan split screen games, and knowing maps backward and forward and tracking movement through other's screens is a legit tactic!!! :)

@zyxe: Again good post dude,, i just said the same and commented to ur above post and then right into this one lol..

**Im with ya 100% and most of our gaming Gen is.

Sadly, they cant recreate that experience(Goldeneye/PD) because it was new at the time. We were blown away by the competitiveness & fun of something new & fresh..That's not to say that PDZ wasnt a letdown to most. but yeah we cant recreate that..

***Toejam & Early comes to mind on why the follow up games sucked.

(the very recent one is awesome)

But we discussed this topic alot back in day on why they tended to suck.

Rap & hiphop was brand new. well the popularity & suburbia movement part was new. And games like ParapaTheRapper & Toejam took advantage.

So when i played a Toejam sequel it was just cringe... I we know this then shouldn't the people who make these decisions for a living know this?

*My PD homie from back n the day is constantly wanting to play co op anything and although i'd rather play MP same house/different TV. she would rather split screen..

My COmpromise was to bring the 2nd tv into the Cave.

which worked out fine since i needed my old TV back since new 4k tv lacks Component for retro...

So two things.

-1- if PD is in yo top 3 then i want the top 10'ish list. "ish!"

~2~ whats a good similar co op thats somewhat newer? Atleast 360/ps3 era. i Doom BFG online coop or splitScreen? WHat about Lost PLanets, Ghost Recons? off top of your head of course ;D

Personally I think it's cool because Perfect Dark rocks, but yeah, apparently the not-sexist mindset to have is to reduce a franchise to a gender token.
