Planetside 2's Creative Director Departs After SOE Goes Independent

Amid layoffs at what is now called Daybreak Game Company, Matt Higby has left the developer.

Following Sony Online Entertainment's recent separation from Sony and subsequent name change to Daybreak Game Company, Planetside 2 creative director Matthew Higby has announced he is stepping away from both the game and the studio.

In a post on Reddit's Planetside subreddit, Higby announced his departure, saying, "Working on Planetside 2 has been the absolute highlight of my career, but after 4 years working on the game, it's time for a change. Today [Friday] was my last day on the Planetside 2 team and at Daybreak games."

This news comes not long after layoffs at the studio which affected, among others, longtime EverQuest producer David Georgeson. Higby, however, said he's been contemplating a move for some time. "This is a move I've been considering for a while now, and the reorganization provided the right opportunity for me to exit," he wrote.

"Planetside 2 is in great hands, with terrific people who honestly care about the game and the players. I can't stress this enough, the folks working on every aspect of the game, developers, marketing, community are talented, hard working people who care more than you can imagine--I'm fully confident they're going to do an amazing job on the next leg of the journey."

Higby is not the only Planetside 2 developer that Daybreak lost this week; producer David Carey announced on Twitter this week that he was also leaving the studio.

As part of its layoff announcement, Daybreak claimed the "reductions will not affect the operation of current games." Its stable of games includes titles like H1Z1, EverQuest Next, and DC Universe Online in addition to Planetside 2.

Planetside 2 was released for PC in 2012, and a PlayStation 4 version is currently in the works. A closed beta for the PS4 version began last month, and Daybreak has already stated its intent to develop games for non-PC and Sony platforms, including the Xbox One, although no specifics have been announced on that front so far.

Not surprising. Planetside 2 has been a sluggish mess. After years of being live with numerous updates there's still very little actual game there, and sparse direction.

I doubt any product of value will ever see the light of day from this studio again. I wonder how much Sony sold it to those suckers for.

Now they just need to get rid of Smedley, but that's never gonna happen. He secured his position in this mess after all.

They probably bought them off only to get their hands on their existing assets like Landmark, H1Z1 and PlanetSide 2.

Firing the directors who now don't do much of anything except making big bucks.

The talk about them "having even more resources now" is mere damage control, the new owners clearly have no interest in investing in the company past keeping the necessary staff to run their existing games.

I doubt we will ever see Everquest Next finished, or any new game from "Daybreak" for that matter.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Free Realms was already canceled. But of course you have Everquest Next which is closer to Free Realms than EQ. Maybe that is what you meant?

SOE won't survive for long if they can't become profitable. They were bleeding money for Sony for more than 10 years, but Sony kept them alive. By being independent they won't have this protection.

I never really got the impression that Higby was well liked by the players. Plus, the game has had problems far before all of this mess. Hopefully Daybreak knows what its doing, and this is just the rats abandoning a sinking ship.

SOE / Daybreak is NOT independent. They are still owned by a parent company. They do not own themselves. Thats like saying Bethesda is independent.

Wow. Something stinks at SOE. It's becoming clear why Sony cut them off. Good for Sony.

And 5 more crowd funded indie companies will appear in the next 2 weeks... Devs hold all the cards here whether big companies or publishers want to admit it. And now it is easier with more incentive than ever to start your own company, there is still a lot of work to be out sourced and crowd funding can generate a ton of capital in a very short time. I am not saying whether or not it is a good thing frankly I hate the idea of early access games but it is what it is.

Wow, talk about all hands abandoning ship. Should have called themselves Titanic. I know that companies like to get rid of dead weight but these guys are going to be light enough on talent to float away.

Sony was the harbour that told the SOE ship it was not welcome, crew are now jumping over board...ships carry disease and pests ya see?

Still I like PS2, looking forward to it on PS4 but it is looking increasingly unlikely :(

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah, I have to think something seriously wrong is going on there. There's been quite a few burbles of uncertainty. PS2 was supposed to launch with the PS4. It's now a year and a half later, and the beta hasn't even launched yet. Everquest Next or Landmark, was supposed to go into beta in Q4 2014, and that's still not happening. Now, after a massive sale that should have netted them quit a heft sum in operating capital, SOE is shedding employees and talent?

I think they're getting rid of the dead weight tbh, SOE were failing for so many years, one failure after another. Planetside 2 was a big failure, Smedley announced it only started turning a profit a few months ago, most of the population quit in the first month after they realized it wasn't Planetside 2 at all.

I'm hoping this will greatly impact EverQuest Next (and change it's name) because judging on Landmark it'll be shite as well.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Planetside 2 is by all means a success actually (a f2p title typically takes a lot longer to become profitable) and tons of players who spend 1000+ hours on that game would strongly disagree with you/

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Just because a game has a small community of dedicated players doesn't mean it is profitable. I tried Planetside 2 when the game launched and there was very few people for a f2p game. Not many servers. And this was years ago.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not exactly surprising that a game with a $25 million+ budget lost money during it's first years when the target market is high end gaming PC's and is a free to play game.
