Platinum Games: NFTs Could Become Important, But First Examples Are Not Great

"If it smells like money, Konami's going to be there in a heartbeat!"

Platinum Games bosses Atsushi Inaba and Hideki Kamiya have commented on one of the most buzzed-about topics in games lately, that being blockchain and NFT technologies. Speaking to VGC, Inaba--who is president and CEO of the Bayonetta studio--said the studio hasn't given much thought to the blockchain/NFT space, but said the early examples have been less than idea. Vice president Kamiya reacted as well and said he wasn't surprised to see Konami get involved in the space.

"I understand it's a hot topic right now and it's really starting to gain momentum, but the way that it's gained momentum has been focused on profitability for the company, but with no positive impact on the creators or the users in any sense. So that's frustrating to see happening," Inaba said.

Inaba said he's observed a trend that those wanting to get involved with NFTs are looking to make a quick buck. "The people who are trying to promote NFTs and partner with gaming companies, their conversations seem extremely one-sided. 'Hey, you're going to make money!' But how does it benefit the user or the creator? If I want to spend my time on something, I want it to benefit making good games," Inaba said.

The executive acknowledged that NFTs will likely have some place in the video game business going forward, but the early examples have left much to be desired in his eyes.

"As content gets more and more digital, I do think that NFT as a concept will gain more importance, but I think that the early adopters are just seeing it as a way to profit as much as possible. That's not something I'm interested in being part of, to be honest," Inaba said.

Also in the interview, Kamiya said he was not surprised to see another prominent Japanese game company, Konami, get involved with NFTs so quickly. "Not really. If it smells like money, Konami's going to be there in a heartbeat!" he said.

"Honestly, I have zero interest in this subject. I think what Inaba-san just said really resonated with me because I consider myself a user at heart, more than a businessman. It doesn't have any benefit for users at the moment. In the future, if it's expanded in a way that has a positive side for users, then maybe I'll start to be interested in what they do with it. But I'm not seeing that at the moment."

The full VGC interview is stacked with interesting insight into the company and its future--go read it here.

NFTs, in particular, have been one of the most-discussed elements of games and the wider technology space for the past year or so. Recently, the indie games platform Itch.io slammed NFTs and the companies that support them. Check out GameSpot's roundup to find out more on where video game companies like Ubisoft, EA, Nintendo, EA, and Xbox stand on them.

That's ridiculous. If they wanted anything good for the gamers, NFTs would be the last thing to come to mind.
There is literally NO other use for them than making money.
You buy the right to a place in a numbers chain, represented by some form of picture or something similar. HOW should this be in any way beneficial to gamers or to creating good games?

What a load of crap. NFTs have no place in gaming, people who deal with them are either morons or those looking to profit from morons.

Inaba... Everything that can be done by NFT can and has been done without. NFT only adds monetisation.

Man, I am liking Platinum Games and Inaba more and more each day and I am glad he had the gall to speak honestly about it.

NFT's are tainted already right out the gate and if you put out a game solely revolving around them, then I feel sorry for the downfall of that said game. I would not touch the stuff even if it were free. Free-to-play game with NFT's at the heart, nope I am not downloading it! They can take their NFT's right out the door with the Metaverse.

Now if you told me we will sell you levels, skins, and items but that you can:

1) Take the items and use it in any game.........and that the game does not go offline and we can keep some single player snippet forever.

2) Item is sold for a reasonable price and available to everyone to infinity.

Then you have made my world more immersive and I will partake, otherwise get lost!

@just1mohr: Unless every single game in the world uses the same game engine, uses the same effects, shaders and look the exact same. You will NEVER be able to use your nft in all games. For that to work the devs would have to do extra work for every single existing nfts to allow them in their own games.. For stuff you bought from OTHERS.

It's not a "maybe this could happen IF". It's an absolute, 100% impossibility.

Let's not even talk about the difference between 3D, 2D, isometric games. Even between just 3D or just 2D games, they'd have to adjust proportions, adjust the skeletal animation and joint (some games have smaller characters, thicker characters, bigger heads, etc), polygons count, textures quality, and shading. Convert file types, add transparency where needed, perhaps redraw the item if the camera angle isn't the exact same (for 2D games), or if one game allows to turn the camera and the others not, and so on. There are MOUNTAINS of reason why this is a pipe dreams and why anyone in the game industry using that as a "benefit" of NFTs is either a liar and tricking you or ignorant about his/her job. Anyways they should be fired in both cases.

Even an official crossover between games with blessing from both sides... Let's say Uncharted characters in Fortnite is not a copy and paste of the characters and items. They are remade to fit in the game, so that it looks like it belongs in the game and so that it's technically compatible with the game.

Oh and you don't own the items. You own the token.

Ask ubisoft for the line of code of the helmet you "own". Ask them for the textures, or to modify it, or even remove it from the game. They won't, cause it's not yours. It's theirs, they have the rights. You just got the NFT, which is loosely linked to that item which lets you use in your own character in "that" game, that's all.

@Slash_out: No, I understand that. What I am trying to say is that this gaming Metaverse should be a universal thing, like the internet. Each dev that partakes in it, gets an address and once you click on the address it starts downloading the assets. Each area/map/level needs to be like an address on the block and every map from every game should be made available and you can walk across them like in the real world. Forget about games as they are now, this is a whole new concept in immersion.

Devs/creators decides on how mainstream or off the wall their address in the world is & they get to see adjacent blocks/addresses. You want 2D, yea travel to 43rd and Fifth to get to the 2D world...that simple....intelligent driven software. You want cyberpunk & neon lights, yea go to YingYang SOHO address.

Actions and movement in characters are added one at a time and build upon. You get a sheet where you can check on/off your movement abilities and once you enter an area they have default actions/movement sets.

As soon as the few develop this, they will own the gaming world...bigger than Fortnite and COD combined, because it will be that and so much more.
