Panic has announced its first ever Playdate Update video showcase for June 8. The 15-minute presentation airs on Panic's YouTube channel at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET and will offer another look at the company's intriguing new handheld, including information about when preorders will open as well as its Season 1 lineup of games.

Ahead of the showcase, Panic has confirmed that the Playdate handheld will retail for $179 USD when it launches. The company also announced it is doubling the number of games that will be included as part of Season 1, from 12 to 24, as well as increasing the handheld's internal storage to 4 GB.

"We've all been quietly working nonstop to get all the complex pieces of the Playdate puzzle into place, and at last we're ready to show you what we've been up to," Panic co-founder Cabel Sasser said in a press release. "There's a lot of amazing things being created here that will hopefully add a bit of joy to your life."

The Playdate handheld was first revealed in 2019, with a planned launch in 2020. The system ultimately ended up being delayed, but Panic showed off a number of games in the works for it last summer, including a version of Doom that used the system's hand crank to fire the chain gun. Panic noted that not all of the games demonstrated last year will necessarily end up shipping with the Playdate, but we'll get a look at the full Season 1 lineup during the presentation, along with "more exciting surprises."

It's still a bit unclear exactly how Playdate's seasons will work, but Panic says those will offer "brand-new games, delivered over time, directly to the device." The video presentation arrives just ahead of E3 2021. While the show officially runs from June 12-15, many companies are holding presentations in the days leading up to it. You can see the full E3 2021 schedule here.

They either need to release this thing already to let it come out and die quickly, or reduce the ridiculous price they want for it. The poor saps that have put their money into aren't getting any of it back ever, so there's no way to help those out. This thing has been vaporware for so long.

The 'niche' factor is the crank for power. But for a $170 product, this device ..... is just an expensive solution to a problem 30yrs ago. With 6000+ mha lithium batteries getting crazily cheaper and cheaper, you could power this black and white screen minimal dot matrix device on one charge for a few days- while playing it!

So many are working on a crowdfunded 'concept' or two that are often interesting and innovative but lacks a real world use and at prices that are puzzling, if justifiable for the amount of time put into it.

For instance I have a motorized wheelchair idea that is awesome, it just requires a long chain and bicycleto always power its motor. I call it the 'one can and one cannot' motorized 6-wheeler. Please donate to my crowd funder, expected release -- ah around the time 'Star Citizen' releases, sooo real soon.

@jenovaschilld: The crank is not used to power the device.

@thomaswmak:I don't think it needs a broad market to be a success. This is a boutique device aimed at a small niche. I suspect that if all it ever has is a single run of units and a few seasons of content, everyone involved in its production will view it as a success, as will most of the people who buy one.

Panic is a brand with a decent amount of good will built up in certain crowds. They may be relatively new to the gaming side of things, with just Firewatch and Untitled Goose Game under their belt, but they've been a developer of well-loved Mac (and later, iOS) apps for decades (IDEs, FTP clients, etc.). They've spent decades cultivating a loyal following, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they have fan who would go for exactly this sort of toy.

Hell, I've even thought about picking one up (though I doubt I will, since I can't justify $180 on something like this), just because I've used their apps and am aware of how they try to pack "delight", for lack of a better term, into everything they do.
