Playerunknown's Battlegrounds-Like Gameplay Might Come To Future Ubisoft DLCs, CEO Says

Could we see an Ubisoft version of Battlegrounds in the future?

Playerunknown's Battlegrounds is one of the most popular games that's released this year, and it's consistently been near the top on Steam in terms of active players. It's gaining enough attention that other companies are starting to take note. Today during Ubisoft's earnings call, CEO Yves Guillemot mentioned that the company is watching Battlegrounds with interest, and that it might do something similar down the line.

In response to a question about the rise of Battlegrounds, Guillemot responded that the game doesn't pose a threat to Ubisoft's properties, but instead it presents an opportunity. Rainbow Six Siege and Ubisoft's other shooters are doing well regardless of Battlegrounds' performance. However, there's a possibility that Ubisoft could make its own version of Battlegrounds' gameplay.

"[Battlegrounds] is doing a fantastic job," Guillemot said. "Rainbow Six continues to grow, and the time spent on the game is increasing, so we didn't see any competition from that game. But we look at what those guys are doing, and it's a type of gameplay that is very interesting and that maybe is something you'll see in some of the DLCs we do on some of our games in the future."

Even though he did not announce anything, his statement reveals that Ubisoft is thinking seriously about Battlegrounds--and that its future products might be influenced by it.

In other Ubisoft news, the company revealed today that Ghost Recon: Wildlands is the year's best seller so far. In addition, its most recent financial quarter has been a strong one, with sales increasing in spite of no new releases.

Battlegrounds, meanwhile, recently passed Grand Theft Auto V on the concurrent user chart, making it fourth all time. It's coming to Xbox One later this year, as well, although a release date hasn't been specified. Xbox One X players will get 4K and HDR support.

"Ubisoft stealing ideas from PUBG"

Yeah, like PUBG totally invented all these Battle Royale concepts.

I don't like a lot of Ubi games, but they remain one of the video game companies that takes the most risks with new IPs and try to come up with interesting ideas. Everyone remembers Far Cry, AC, Ghost Recon Wildlands or WD 1/2 as the typical open-world Ubi games, but they also make/have made a lot of cool, innovative games that feel very different: Rayman, South Park, Grow Home, Just Dance, Steep, For Honor or their VR games like Eagle Flight and Star Trek.

At least they're trying. They showed a lot of promising things at E3 too: Skull & Bones, BG&E 2, the Mario x Rabbids game...

Their games aren't always perfect (heck, lots of them are complete rubbish like For Honor), but at least they're trying. Most people only see the main franchises and completely forget that Ubisoft has many different, some smaller, studios around the world.

Ubisoft might use massively popular ideas in their own games instead of doing their own thing? Weird, they've never ever done that before. /sar_casm_off

Vivendi is also looking at Ubisoft with interest and hopefully they'll succeed and bring an end to this sad excuse of a gaming company.

Oh come on Ubi, maybe worry about Vivendi stealing your company right now rather than stealing the ideas of other smaller developers

We all know Ubisoft can't innovate anymore, they can only steal, but it's still a little surprising to see them admit it publicly at such a high level.

Big devs must be salivating over Battlegrounds success. Especially Ubisoft whose specialty is big giant maps. All they have to do is throw a bunch of players in a big map and they'll make their own fun. Minimal need for voice actors and mocap for cutscenes. Then they can sell Dab emotes and neon weapon skins that make your eyes bleed.

The best fit I can think of would be to add a Battle Royale mode to something like The Division. I don't think they could patch in 100 player support but maybe 30 something?

It would be crazy for a game like Far Cry, too!

Except with a flood of micro-transactions.

@repulsive44552: That was my first thought, because with Ubisoft it's money first, enjoyment second. In reality it should be enjoyment first, then money will roll in if it's fun.
