Playing Back 4 Blood Solo Means Missing Out On Rewards, Achievements

To earn supply points, players have to participate in Back 4 Blood's social modes.

Back 4 Blood is a social game, and developer Turtle Rock Studios doesn't want players to forget that. While playing through a campaign match with others will let players earn supply points, which can be used to purchase cards and cosmetics, the game's solo mode totally cuts players off from all rewards.

The first time players try to pick out what zombie-slaying experience they want in the game's hub area, Fort Hope, they're greeted with three options. Campaign puts players into a match with anyone in their party or random players, and Swarm mode is the game's take on Left 4 Dead PvP. Solo Campaign is about as straightforward as it gets, letting players tackle Back 4 Blood's four-act campaign without anyone to help save for bots.

Now Playing: Back 4 Blood - Official Campaign Cinematic Trailer

Anyone looking for some zombie-slaying alone time will have to do it knowing they won't be getting any rewards for their hard, blood-soaked work. A screen that pops up as soon as players choose Solo Campaign details everything they won't earn by progressing through the game this way. While maps and objectives are adjusted for one player, Solo Campaign won't grant players any Supply Points or progress towards accomplishments and achievements.

The one upside of Solo Campaign is that players get to use any solo card decks they make, which have access to a wide variety of cards compared to regular campaign decks.

Back 4 Blood is currently available in early access for anyone who purchased the game's Ultimate or Deluxe editions. The game will be available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 and for free via Game Pass on October 12.

Looks like I wont even give this game a try what so ever due to the lack of solo play progress. I can't stand playing online with people because it is always stupid kids and idiots I get teamed up with. Left for Dead was awesome because you got the best of both worlds for both types of gamers.

Guess I'll just skip this and stick with World War Z until Dying Light 2 comes out.

You'd be a moron to play this game solo. It's designed from the ground up to be co-op. Been this way for DECADES with Left 4 Dead. Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

If you want to play solo, this is not the game for you.

Give it two weeks before they reverse that decision by "Realizing our mistake."

This is the reason I refund it in STEAM. I dont live in NA or EU so i try to find a game to play with others and it was not possible, so there is no way to progress on the game, unless i find other people. I dont think that paying premium price for a game in hope for other people to play with you is a good idea, which is weird since is not the first in its kind and other games allow you progress even if it is in SINGLE PLAYER, like Vermintide 2, Alien, Destiny 2, Avengers and so on.

So don't get anything that will help you progress in the game or buy from their cosmetic shop that'll completely surprisingly get microtransactions post-launch, or play with random shitheads online.

Yeah, I think I'll pass.

Game is designed from the ground up to be coop. If they half ass the SP, it's about a compromise of resources and not wanting it to interfere by it's central vision of the game, they only need to make it work in REAL OFFLINE really.

I know it sucks, I love story based SP shooters only, and there's no point in recommending you any other because we get one to play every 2 years thanks to the never ending online MP fever.

Ok, it's a bit restrictive of them, but I also honestly don't think anyone would buy this, or any Left 4 Dead style game to play solo...so it's probably not much of an issue for most of the playerbase.

@Carpetfluff:

Damn, I must not have bought the original L4D and L4D2 (twice) on Xbox back when they launched because I only played them by myself. Wait a minute.... I DID.

It's like they don't want a certain playerbase to buy their game. I'm ok with that. Didn't look as good as Left 4 Dead or Killing Floor anyway.

This plus the lame versus mode shuts me off. All that extra fluff made the game too complicated anyway. Nobody stopped to pick up materials and people shouted bloody murder at you if you spent *THEIR* party wide currency...which they weren't spending anyway.

@Barighm: In the open beta I kept landing in games with at least one person who was ADAMANT we had to go the wrong way, and usually a couple people who just walked around yelling endless, mostly pointless questions "what is this?! Where'd you get that gun?! I don't know what I'm doing! This is dumb! Where is everyone?!"

I never landed in a single match that was good and the only one I managed to finish the map was one where there was only one other person in the match who just ran off on their own but the bots stuck with me.

@Xylymphydyte: And then there's the final stage where the special infected suddenly transform into unstoppable juggernauts and wipe your party in seconds. I usually never saw where they attacked from. Everyone would just be dead and I'd go back to res them and get ganked. Not sure what statement the dev was trying to make there. Don't you dare play this game without a team? Because that's the message I got. I only really enjoyed the previous game for versus. The actual campaign wasn't really all that special. Well done with terrific production values, but not THAT great on its own.

Frankly, all of the builds, added item complexity, and mission modifiers makes the game look like it's designed to be a live service money grab instead of the simple and tight experience L4D was.

@Barighm: I never got that far with it, the matchmaking was such a mess I just didn't care. I'll try it on Gamepass at best I guess.

It's clear TurtleRock learned nothing from Evolve. There's plenty of better alternatives on the market now too. Most notably World War Z is a better horde zombie shooter with better more straight forward progression systems and their super impressive numbers.

@Xylymphydyte: Or Aliens Fireteam, which is janky in many ways, but it's much more straightforward. I ended up getting annoyed with it, but I still find myself wanting to unlock all the different weapons. And then there is that Evil Dead game that looks like wicked good fun.
