PlayStation 3 sales hit 50 million, Move ships 8 million

Sony's console reaches milestone four months after Microsoft confirmed equivalent figures for Xbox 360.

When Sony released the PlayStation 3 toward the end of 2006, the Japanese hardware maker had given its American rival Microsoft a year's head start. Since then, the Xbox 360 has been ahead in the sales race, though Nintendo's Wii--which was released at almost the same time as the PS3--rapidly established itself at the front of the pack. Sony today confirmed that the PlayStation 3 hit a significant sales milestone in March, with the 50 millionth PS3 being purchased on March 29.

New hardware and accessories have helped the PS3 past the 50-million mark.
New hardware and accessories have helped the PS3 past the 50-million mark.

The Xbox 360 took nine months longer to reach that particular milestone; Microsoft's Steve Ballmer took to the stage at January's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to confirm that his firm's console had just sold 50 million units. As of December 2010, the Wii had sold 86 million units worldwide.

Sony also confirmed today that PlayStation Move hardware had sold 8 million units as of April 3, though it was not clear from the numbers provided if this was for complete systems or the total number of individual elements, such as controllers. Microsoft's Kinect motion-sensing peripheral has outperformed the Move hardware too, with life-to-date sales of 10 million units being confirmed last month.

These milestones came despite an apparent drop in US sales for the PS3 in 2010--Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter estimated a year-on-year sales decline of 12 percent for Sony's console in 2010, compared to a 3 percent drop for the market as a whole. Sony also confirmed that as of March 20, the PlayStation Network had 75 million registered accounts.

I think blueray will ultimately go the distance and nail the market since everything seems to be converging towards that as the favoured media storage format, although card based storage is also looking good too. Games in particular benefit from blueray, simply because of the vast amount of data you can cram onto the disks. Duel layer DVD's have pretty much maxed out, so games on the XBox 360 for instance probably won't get any better or bigger than what we're seeing now.

You're exactly right Smakaveli. Actually these numbers are impressive for each of the consoles and show a very healthy game market despite of the sluggish economy. All 3 systems will be among the top selling consoles of all time by the end of this generation (whatever that really means) and all 3 have the potential to outsell all of the consoles of previous generations with the exception of the PS2 most likely because its numbers are rather absurb and it is still selling.

All I see here is a bunch of childish fanboys flaming each others console preference. Sony and Microsoft are neck and neck, and Nintendo is on top (because of the non-"core" gamer). Please, stop all of the childish arguing. All three consoles have their good points and their bad points. In the end, we all win. We get fantastic games to play, and new titles to look forward to every year.

To the people talking about ventilating a system properly you are exactly right but you are forgetting about all electronics biggest enemy: Dust. I lost count of how many computers I've had to repair because people don't clean the dust out of them reguarlly and all the heatsinks and fans get clogged with dust causing the systems to burn up. The same is true about consoles regardless of who made them, clean the vents and drives with an spray can eletronic air duster regulary and the system with last at least 3 times longer. This applies to electronics as well especially reciever/amplifiers.

The biggest reason PS3 is gaining so much momentum is blu-rays. Go into Best Buy or any other electronics store and you will see their DVD sections are rapidly vanishing. The cost of Blu-ray drives initailly caused PS3 sales to be slow, but it, and the power of the cell processor gives the PS3 much longer legs than the Xbox360 so it is inevitable that it will eventually surpass the Xbox360 in sales, and like a previous poster said it will likely be the next holiday season when it happens. It doesn't mean one console is better than the other it is just the result of differing strategies by Sony and Microsoft. It doesn't hurt that virtually all big releases are now on both PS3 and Xbox360 with virtually no differences between the different versions despite what you my see on some fanatical websites.

@slvrraven9 The reason there are more PSN accounts than PS3 is that many families create different accounts for each user in the family. I helped my brother in law set up 3 accounts on his PS3, one for him and one each for his sons. It doesn't mean Sony is creating fake PSN connects to bloat there numbers. The reason you don't see this on the Xbox 360 is that each account costs $60 a year or more so families are much more likely to simply share one account to save money instead of the preferred method of everybody having there own account.

i hardly count psn registered accounts as an accomplishment....especially for us tech geeks and/or gamers who either A. want to game online or B. want an upgradeable blu ray player. also wtf with the PSN having more registered users than PS3's sold? well i guess if u just..... umm....hmmm......how does that work? just go online and spam up some new accounts? my guess is these are people who are game sharing on different consoles...

so what if wii has reached that many consoles they have what like 5 good games? People by a Wii and 4 controlers, and then just play sports forever. Whereas both the PS3 and 360 have great games and sell way more copies. Nintendo markets to people with no money. I have owned all the current gen consoles and the wii is the weakest of the 3. PS3 is nice but i prefer the 360's online and game catalog more.

@steelmouth You don't say? I was getting at the closing gap between each system, don't be surprised if late this year or early next, total PS3 sales exceed Xbox 360 sales. On a year by year basis the PS3 has outsold the Xbox 360 "period". As stated here "the Xbox 360 took 9 months longer to reach the milestone". That's what I was getting at, sorry it went right over your head.

@Albaficas: U mad bro? @article: I think within the next holiday season sony will surpass MS with this. At this point I would imagine sony should be outselling MS majorly, have to wait and see the "holiday" season numbers i guess.

Ps3 "exception for non exclusives games, X is better" > X360 > PC Wii is the best for the interaction, now Sony can enjoy with this when they stolen the idea.

Fanboys are idiots. Anyone with half a brain will buy the console that suits their needs instead of devoting themselves to a company that could care less whether they live or die. They are the true sheep of the world.

@redskinstu. It sure seems that way. Whenever there is even a semi positive story about Sony they just have to put some negativity in the article. That may not be true but it sure seems that way.

So, expect Xbox 720 by Christmas 2012. I'm at the point where I could almost see buying a PS3, but then I can hold off for the $199 price point.

When I think back to the sales figures of games consoles pre-32bit era, and you compare them to today's sales, you come to realise how popular this media has become. It's impressive stuff. Oh and while I'm here I might as well make some kind of juvenile comment related to console preference. Erm... yeah, Sony like totally craps on M$. Sony ftw, wooooo. Nope, that just felt icky. How do some of you live like that?

@digi-demon. Not all of them perchased new consoles, were fixed by Microsoft. Those that lost a console because of it being out of warranty never bought a new console. Thank god for that 3 year warranty I suppose.

@Sigil-otaku Hi, I agree, the PS3 choice of BD media was a good idea on paper - but badly implemented with its 2x Drive. Much like most new or 'initial version' console hardware it was rushed. Although I dont reckon a 12x BD will be much better - why?, well because future requirements by advanced graphics and processing systems will still cause bottlenecks - that and developers always push new hardware too far.

people are still aurguing about this? Look here is my view, i play my xbox maybe 10 hours a week, keep it in a well ventilated area, and keep it covered with a dust resistent Towel. Still to date i have been through 3 of them, meanwhile my dreamcast, saturn, ps3, last gen xbox, and wii all work fine (i would talk about my nes, and turbographx but they are both cartridge base and therefore have less moving parts than a cd or dvd based system). I don't know what that would mean to everyone else, but all my relatives and friends, which includes over 30 people, have been through a least 3 of them each.

@Sigil-otaku I can see how trophies are or could be better; there are different trophies with different values. Although achivements do have diffrent values the PSN trophies are visually different and your friends can tell how much of the easy/hard trophies you have without having to enter your profile. Nevertheless I prefer the 360 achivements; I like to see my gamerpoints stacked up together in a nice and clean number...

@Vonboon We've been through this. No PS3 owner has went through 4-6 Xbox 360s and THEN decided to switch to PS3, or the Xbox 360 would have 4 to 6X the sales of the PS3. 200 to 300 million units sold? That's basically what you're telling me. Stop feeding us crap, liar.

@mtait01 Alot of people, like myself, don't ventilate there system like their supposed to. Meaning if you have your PS3 or 360 in an entertainment center, you can count on it breaking w/in 1 to 2.5 years (at most). Those systems, no matter how good the gpu and cpu and all that stuff, is made VERY cheaply. You have to have that thing in the open on some type of coffee table in the middle of the room. Otherwise those systems are prone to breaking down because of over heating. Thats the real problem with those system. The sheer heat that can generate over hours of play can be between 2 hundred and 300 degrees in temperature. Try feeling the bottom of your PS3 or Xbox, even the slim ones. That is not adding the temperature of something like a home theater receiver or a flat-screen television (those things get very hot), or just the walls of say an entertainment center can cause heat convection, making the system double the heat output of the system.

@IMPLEGEND I agree with you on most of the stuff as I don't particularly believe I should have to pay for online but how are trophies better than achievements? The implementation is almost exactly the same except achievements seem more rewarding since they pop out at you more and during that little moment of caring (as you generally care when you get it but not long after) you can see what you achieved just by hitting the guide button whereas trophies on PSN are more awkward to look at. I've actually stopped caring about either but MS got me interested again with 'awards' where you actually get stuff for doing them.

PS4 should work out fine, as long as they go blu ray again, and not try to force another format on everyone. Sony got online right (free for online play, pay for Playstation plus premium discounts), plus the trophy system is better than xbox 360 achievements, especially now that virtually all new games have them now.
