PlayStation Cancels Helldivers 2 Mandatory PSN Sign-In Requirement Following Player Uproar

Managed democracy to the rescue.

Last week saw a new policy change for Helldivers 2 on PC, as a PSN account became a mandatory requirement to sign in to the game. This announcement didn't go over well with the Helldivers 2 playerbase, and after the game was bombarded with thousands of negative reviews, Sony announced that it had reversed course on this decision.

"Helldivers fans--we've heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward," Sony wrote in a statement on its official account. "We're still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we'll keep you updated on future plans."

Sony's decision to enforce a PSN account requirement had major ramifications last week, as Helldivers 2 was quickly delisted in 177 countries where PSN is not available. Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt commented on the problem on Sunday, explaining that the studio was "talking solutions" with PlayStation behind the scenes. Originally, the PSN requirement was supposed to have been a part of the game when Helldivers 2 launched, but due to the overwhelming success the game had it was postponed to a later date.

"It was my decision to disable account linking at launch so that players could play the game," Pilestedt wrote on X/Twitter. "I did not ensure players were aware of the requirement and we didn't talk about it enough. We knew for about six months before launch that it would be mandatory for online PS titles."

With the controversy seemingly over, Helldivers 2 players can expect to play around with several new arctic-themed weapons in the Polar Patriots warbond this month. Meanwhile, Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut will launch May 16 and a PSN account will only be required for its Legends multiplayer mode and the new PlayStation overlay, developer Suckerpunch has confirmed.

Glad to hear that as I already paid for the game prior to this proposed and glad it was rescinded.

God the Xbox/microsoft fans are something haha. Sea of Thives on ps5 demand a Microsoft account and you don’t see anyone complaining about it.

Pretty rare for Sony to back down. Then again, this is PC players, not PS players. Sony really needs to get treated for that Big Head Syndrome and their Suits should maybe take a geography class.

Suits: "Let's make it a requirement for everyone playing the game to have a PSN account."

Underling: "Ahh, Sir, PSN is only available in 73 out of 191 countries."

Suits: "Well figure it out dammit or you're fired."

Underling: "There is no figuring it out, Sir."

Suits: "Well, never mind then. But you're still fired!"

Seriously, who wants yet another account and 2 accounts for the same game? Too many companies are doing this. Every freaking publisher wants their Publishing account linked to Xbox or PlayStation, among other things. These are Steam players. They don't put up with BS.

Good for gamers for winning a battle against the big guys.

Good for Helldivers devs for not being dragged down by megapubishers.

The sad thing is that people are praising Sony for something that should have never happened in the first place. I guess if you need good publicity, just do something people will hate and then say you made a mistake and "fix" it.

@Lord_Sesshy: If you think that the reversal of this braindead PSN requirement magically gave Sony back all of the good will it earned (and then lost) with HD2, you are veeeeeeeeery mistaken.

@m4a5: Go look at the tweet from PS. The comments are filled with people praising Sony for this...plus I never said they would get all the good will back. Just that they will look good for reversing their decision.

@Lord_Sesshy: You need to figure out the difference between "good decision" comments and "Sony is [insert praise]" comments. Because I don't see any of the latter at the top in your example 😂

Heck, most of them are straight up patronizing Sony 🤣🤣🤣

@m4a5: I mean just look up the definition of "praise" and some of its synonyms. "Good decision" definitely fits under some of those examples.

And maybe your twitter algorithm is just different then mine because the ones I was seeing was definitely praise. Like actual congratulations towards PS for their decision to change their minds.

There is an universal language EVERY company in the world understands: Money!
The fact of not being able to sell the game in over 170 countries made Sony flip-flop.
If it werent for those countries, Sony wouldnt retreat imo.

This is one of the major things that caused me to switch to PC gaming in the first place. People should not have to pay to play online with their friends period. The server upkeep should come from the devs after charging 70 fucking quid for a game.

@jimg81: Same reason why I jumped over. Not to mention, Sony became more anti-consumer after the release of the PS4. The major success of the PS4 got to their heads and appointing Jim Ryan as CEO as well as moving their HQ to the US have made things worse.

I don't feel like I miss much now because most of their exclusives will eventually be ported to PC anyways.

Good. I can go flip my review back as a "I want this to be a lesson".

But man, they certainly took their time. I don't know how much the weekend played a part, or the pulling from countries in response to no PSN, but I'm glad this gem of a game isn't getting f***ed over by Sony...

Sony these are Steam users. These are the people who don't trust Microsoft games and software while running Steam on a Windows PC. And the same users who won't buy Unreal Engine games from the Makers of Unreal Engine's own App.

Why would they ever want to make a Sony account for security reasons, from the same Sony who is known for being hacked all the time?

I saw some idiots say stuff like "what's the big deal? It takes 5 minutes to create a PSN account, so just do it". Those types of bootlickers will accept any inferior product and predatory bait-and-switch business practice. "Come on, it's not censorship. It's just less blood and less revealing outfits. It's not a cash grab, it's just an optional DLC that gives you content that was supposed to be in the main game. It's not rewriting history. They just edited a cutscene in a 4-year old game to be more 'consistent' with the sequel."

Never shill for corporations. Expect better from your video games and publishers. That's the only way they'll get better.

Good. People already paid and played, and they were left with a bricked game because "their country is not listed between the ones where PSN works". Imagine getting ripped off this soon after the game's release after you already PAID. And it is a premium game no less, no f2p trash.

Proud of my fellow Steamers, we at least stand up against what is not right. Other gamers just whine and whine and do nothing.

Steam and PC players are a force not to be reckoned with. It's not 2010 anymore.

Somebody told them they would have to offer mandatory refunds regardless of playtime for changing the terms of service XD

PSN numbers must be real low for helldivers, not even their own plebs bought the game...

Playstation as a whole has been such a clusterfuck this generation that i am beginning to ask myself why i gave them $723cad for the system. In my opinion, currently, playstation is worse than what they were during the ps3 launch days because at least, back then, not only you had games, but you had a ton of new exclusives to look forward to. You get nothing with the ps5.

@hardwenzen: I mean, comparing the X and PS5 at launch, it was the half baked system by far.

Only got SSD support a year later. And a few other big features took a while...

You people keep complaining about some imaginary lack of PS5 exclusive games.

Totally agree with you here. less than 50% of the UI features were incorporated in the PS5 UI that was in the PS Pro UI. No support for Atmos, Vision - hack and slashed party features, and then their biggest blunder, price hikes on Essentials and Extra. (And their online store is a friggin' mess) - I have migrated to Series X for the most part, cancelled Essentials completely, and am pretty much out of their ecosystem now. PS5 is regulated for any 1st party that may not suck because even their 1st party took a dive in quality. GoW2 and HZD while ok were shells of their former launches. And things like what they tried to pull with Helldivers 2 and signing up for a PS account is laughable. Sony needs the wooden spoon. I just wish MS could deliver it because if they can't, both just go right into the land of mediocrity.

@hardwenzen: This entire gen has been very...homogenous. And it's not even because of exclusives, which honestly don't even make sense from a cost-perspective these days. It's because both the Xbox and PlayStation are essentially the same box with different shells -- which is that the machines are less consoles and more PCs

My household got a Series S early one since that was the most cost-effective way to get something under my TV at that point, and between that machine, my PC, and my Switch, it's the underpowered Switch that gets the most attention from me as a working 30-something

@nilsdoen: I sold my launch PS5 about 3 months ago and no regrets. Been a PS main (with all systems) for couple generations but I don't like the company they are now. Gamepass has kept me quite busy, and I think Xbox is gonna have a strong year ahead, but we'll see. PS broke trust here, and showed they don't give a damn about their customers. Shady company, I'm done with em.

That is exactly the reason. When sony is too comfy and have no competition, they're an abysmal company.
