PlayStation Plus Free Games for August Available Now

You can now download the free PS Plus games for this month.

It's Tuesday, and that means that the PlayStation Store has been updated. And today, you can download August's selection of free PlayStation Plus games.

There are six games available for free to PS Plus subscribers, including both recent and older titles. Headlining the selection is Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, the isometric, cooperative multiplayer-focused action game that launched last December for PlayStation 4. In addition, if you've held on to your PlayStation 3, you'll also be able to pick up God of War: Ascension. The game was released in March 2013 and was developed by Santa Monica Studio.

The full list of games available for free downloads is below.

"CastleStorm's well-executed twists to the tower defense genre make it a unique game with something to offer a variety of players. The occasional control issues are regrettable but hardly insurmountable, and the blend of offensive and defensive objectives and the competitive play are sufficient reasons to overlook that minor flaw as you happily commit yourself to the task of ruining the marauding Vikings' day." Read the rest of our Castlestorm review here. We gave it an 8.

"No, it doesn't quite reach the audacious and rage-filled moments of God of War: Ascension's predecessors, nor does it move the series forward in any way, but it's skillfully put together, and wonderfully satisfying to play. The mix of Greek mythology and lurid schoolboy fantasy still manages to simultaneously charm and gross out all at once, and that's a trait few games can boast, let alone execute with such confidence." Read our review of God of War Ascension here. We gave it an 8.

"If you're willing to let go of any hope for depth and instead seek a chunk of clever cooperative fun, Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris is ready to escort you on another tomb-raiding adventure... As an afternoon's worth of jolly cooperation, Lara Croft's newest sojourn makes a fine flight of fancy to an Egypt that probably never was, but certainly should have been." Read our review of Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris here. We gave it a 7.

"As memorable as it is to navigate tilting rooms with only a few hanging lamps to light the way, it is that spider that most embodies Limbo's somber spirit. The later puzzles are complex and clever, but they don't haunt the heart... The end offers insight into a backstory left otherwise untouched--enough of it to inspire another playthrough, this time ever so much wiser than you were before." Read the rest of our review of Limbo here. We gave it an 8.

"Sound Shapes is a remarkable convergence of music and platforming. The community levels hammered home just how singular and enthralling this game is. It is a transcendent experience in so many ways. Maybe its most important contribution is giving a voice to the world through music and action." Read our review of Sound Shapes here. We gave it a 9.

"Though punishment is but a slap on the wrist initially, trying to achieve the highest rank is far from easy... Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark is a tightly crafted and incredibly rewarding adventure through a dark dystopia." -- Read our review of the first Stealth Inc, which we gave an 8.

All six of these games are available for free for Plus subscribers until the end of the month. You can download them from the PS Store here.

My personal recommendation is Sound Shapes, a terrific music-based platformer. Its built-in levels are awesome, especially those with music composed by the musician Beck, but its map editor has let the community make some incredible levels. Which games are you most excited to play? Let us know in the comments below.

I just went to download God of War Ascension for the PS3 and was gutted at the 75gb storage requirement. My hard drive is no way near big enough to cope with that.

So disappointed.

So with much pleading from my son I said f it and decided I'm gonna get a Vita today. We're more of the action adventure, fps, and car racing type. Any one have any suggestions?

@rasterror: While definitely not an action adventure, fps, or racing game, Persona 4 Golden is by far the best game on the Vita. I highly recommend it. Other than that maybe Soul Sacrifice, Freedom Wars, Dragon Crown, Assassin's Creed Liberation, and Gravity Rush. Tales of Heart R is definitely worth playing too.

@Vylsith: I got Tales of Heart, Resistance, and Uncharted and I got Kill Zone, despite not really liking the series but I heard the Vita version was good, Muramasa, and Dragon's Crown through Gamefly.com waiting for me when I get back from vacation. I never cared for Persona bur Assassin's Creed and Gravity Rush are a must buy. Thanks for the heads up.

@auberonfall: I bought Uncharted along with it and will probably pick up Gravity Rush today. So far my son absolutely loves Tales of Heart and won't put it down. Still the price of memory is ridiculous. Yes I bought a 16 GB card for $30 on Amazon but compared to the 64 GB micro SD card I just bought for $22 it's still a ridiculous price. But my son wanted and has been a great kid so what baby wants is what baby gets.

@rasterror: Borderlands for sure! You might be able to find a Borderlands Vita bundle. Tearaway is excellent and unique as well, but isn't quite the genre you said. If you have a PS+ account or plan to, you might want to splurge on a large memory card, they're expensive because their some weird proprietary format, but it's worth it for the space. I've only got an 8GB and I'm maxed out from getting the free games every month.

@rasterror:

Uncharted may be worth a look. It is great on the PS3, but the Vita version is different. Whether it is any good or not I cannot say.

Broken Sword 5 is a game on it that I would love to play personally but that is an old school point and click adventure game.

EDIT: Actually i just looked up the Gamespot review of it, here is a Uncharted: Golden Abyss link to it, if you are interested?

Hmm...

Wonder which is better, $50 a year for random assortment of games + shitty online service; or $50 ($10 a bundle) a year spent on Humble Bundle for their random assortment of games.

However, those PS+ "Free" games are only playable as long as you pay yearly but the Humble Bundle games are yours forever.

The PS+ "Free" games is a let down if you've already owned them but with Humble Bundle you can sell the codes of games you've already owned.

Finally, Humble Bundle purchase goes to charity but PS+ money goes...somewhere (definitely not towards improving the service that's for sure :P )

@digishah: The online service works fine and I'm more than happy overall with Playstation Plus. Go fanboy somewhere else kiddo. Either that or you're shilling for Humble Bundle (whatever the hell that is). Nobody cares regardless.

@digishah: Then what are you commenting? Be happy that you dont have a subscription. Play the games that you want on Steam. Let others play what games they want on Ps4 or Xbox One.

@florin: Just trying to find an analogues concept to PS+ on PC. You don't have to be so butthurt about it. It's not like PS4 owner has any option when it comes to gaming online. Plus, planning to get a PS4 sometime in the future and was just weighing my option...

To PS+ or not to PS+, that is no option

@Vylsith: Your the one blinded by fanboyism if you think ps+ is a terrific and "compulsory" (if you ever want online MP) service. I own a Nintendo system and I don't have to pay shit to play online, ever. So open your eyes fanboy.

@TheZeroPercent: I'll agree it's a bit of a letdown to how amazing PS+ used to be. It's still a decent offering overall though. I'm guessing it'll get better in the future when PS4 games are actually old enough to offer for free without having a huge price tag associated with them for Sony.

Saw GOW Ascension brand new for 10 dollars at Target lol But Sony will probably put a 40-60 price tag on it and call it a bargain.

@sargentpsgamer: $40-$60? Do you still think it's March 2013 when GOW:A was new and just released? It's August 2015. Of course, you have noticed that retail stores have good deals due to overstock. I buy cheaper Xbox, Nintendo, PC, and Playstation games all the time at Target and other retailers.

Sony sells GOW: Ascension brand new for $14.99 btw, not $40-$60. I just happened to see the GOW: Ascension price in the PS store before I downloaded the GOW Ascension free due to my PS+ subscription.

@SolidTy: It's a joke because they sell 2 year old games for full price on their store then will "put them on sale" or give it out for free and say it's a "$60 value!" meanwhile retailers have it on clearance for 10 dollars.

@sargentpsgamer: Yeah, I agree for the most part. However, what you are describing really is what I see every company (EA, Ubisoft, Activision, Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, etc) doing that which is why I don't support buying digital as collector, other than dirt cheap Steam deals, XBL, Wii, and PSN deals.

Retailers will always have that advantage in that when they have too many copies of any product, they start a bargain bin. More people should continue buying physical copies because that's where the saving is just after waiting a few months.
