PlayStation Plus Free Games For December 2022 Available Now

Subscribers can grab three free games right now, including one-brand new release.

December 2022's free PlayStation Plus games lineup is available to claim now, and members have a lot to play this month. Though you're getting three titles like always, you technically have a whopping five games to play thanks to Mass Effect Legendary Edition. The remastered compilation is joined by Biomutant and Divine Knockout. All three titles are available to claim until January 3.

As usual, all PlayStation Plus subscribers, regardless of tier, can grab December's games at no extra cost.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition includes updated versions of the original three Mass Effect games. If you haven't played this beloved RPG trilogy from BioWare, you should definitely check it out. The quality-of-life changes also make the trilogy worth revisiting for longtime fans.

Meanwhile, Biomutant is developer Experiment 101's post-apocalyptic action game starring a mammal warrior. Though it's a bit rough around the edges, action aficionados should give it a try.

Divine Knockout is a brand-new game that just released today. It's just the latest new release that PlayStation Plus subscribers have been able to play immediately at no extra charge.

PlayStation Plus free games for December 2022

Available December 6-January 3, 2023

  • Mass Effect Legendary Edition (PS4)
  • Biomutant (PS4, PS5)
  • Divine Knockout (PS4, PS5)

The lack of Mass Effect 3 multiplayer is a bummer. I don't consider the remastered trilogy complete without it

@sippio: I played ... re played the whole series over again on PC, when it was updated. Graphically, well done with lots of tweaks, and all of the quests tweaked a bit, much easier to follow if you went straight from one game to another. ME2 graphical improvements and planet scouting tweaked also, and faster. Sniping in some of the larger areas made cleaner.

I personally ran into no bugs or graphical problems, I could tell. 2k at 90fps.

BUT, it is still a 2007 ish game and hard not to notice it. Third person over the shoulder was cumbersome to control, and still is. You forget about it pretty fast because it is ME and such a great RPG.

Wow I was just going to pick up ME trilogy. ME2 is a top 20 best game of all time, have not replayed it since 2010. Never tried ME3 either. Now is the time. in Sony we trust!!

@Mozelleple112:

I know I’ve played one of these. Going from planet to planet if I recall correctly. Not sure which one, but I think it was the second one in the series too.

If you like M E, you might also like The Outer Worlds. It’s broadly similar.

@just1mohr: It's the EA play vault which is part of gamepass. No EA game that has gone into the vault has ever been removed. So somewhat different then your normal game pass addition. It's been on there already for like a year and unless something changes it's not expected to be removed.

In addition you can play it on xbox or PC. Or even stream it over the cloud on different devices with game pass ultimate.

This is one thing i always gave Sony a Thumbs up for... Their "freebies" are usually pretty good (definitely better than the "freebies" on xbox, which is usually indie poop)

Mass Effect legendary is a great freebie, and a must for anyone on PS that hasn't bought it already, and especially that haven't played the series yet. (double especially for Mass Effect 1 & 2... great games)

@j3diknightdave: it is subjective, and I do sub to Xbox and PS. Sometimes PS has good games for the month and sometimes Xbox does just as well some not so good games.

I don't even remember the last time XBOX had a decent "free" AAA game. and I'm more of an advocate for XBOX.

but,

their "freebies" are usually shit, and something they've always lacked on for their loyal subscribers.

It's honestly not a bad deal, but staying subbed to the service? Not a big fan of that. The best deal ever were those free XBOX 360 games that stayed locked to your account forever regardless of if you kept the service or not.

@vgmkyle: You don't have to stay subbed to PS Plus for the monthly free games, once you claimed them they stay in your library, contrary to the games that you can only access from the PS Plus catalogue as a subscriber. Am I wrong?

@Destructionzz: Yes you are wrong. For the monthly "free" games that you get from PS plus you have to remain active as a PS Plus subscriber to play them. So if you claim Mass Effect in December and your subscription runs out in January then you lose access to the game and any other PS Plus "free" games you have claimed. When you resubscribe then are your previous claimed games are able to be played again. It's always been that way. Xbox 360's free games with XBL were yours even if your sub ran out. Xbox stopped doing that with xbox one games.

@firedrakez: @vgmkyle Are you guys new? PS+ has been giving away a few free games every month for over 12 years now. In fact, they were doing it before you had to pay for PS+. They originally were straight up FREE... not even a sub required.

Every. Single. Month. since July of 2010 back in the PS3 days. On PS3, PS+ was free. You didn't need a sub to get these free games, and you didn't need a sub to play online. That's a PS4 addition/problem.

There are now 754 titles in PS user libraries for those that have claimed every title since then. They are PERMANENT additions. Not just rentals.

Where the actual f&%$ have you guys been?!?

@underdog015: They're not talking about total games given. They're talking about the difference: 360 Gold games were true giveaways whereas PS+ games always required a sub to play (or something to that effect; never had a PS3).

@underdog015: Are the games that you got thru a PS+ sub in your owned library list on your PS console or on a separate PS+ list? Sony stopped offering bonus PS3 games on PS+ years ago while Microsoft included 2 bonus Xbox 360 games per month which you get to own permanently and gets added to your ownedl library(not requiring a sub to accesss) along with 2 Xbox One games up until a month or so ago which increased our owned library. On Xbox consoles there is a separate XBL Gold library(which includes the 2 Xbox One games obtained per month) that require an ongoing XBL sub and an owned library that includes the 2 Xbox 360 bonus games you received per month. MS has been offering 2 Xbox 360 games per month since 2013 until 2022 so imagine how big the owned Xbox 360 library is for many Xbox console owners if they have been subscribing for a long time. PS+ games are rentals because they require a subscription to access them. That is not the case with the hundreds of XBL Gold OG Xbox and Xbox 360 games we have accumulated thru the years which you can still access even if you cancel your sub.

Not a leak. A well planned marketing ploy. Done the same day Xbox announced their December releases. I get tired of web sites being marketing outlets for companies.

Looks like we get every title from EA's $4 per month subscription service now as a "free PS Plus game". What value.

Maybe it's time they finally made it part of PS Plus. But I guess then it would be part of the higher, more expensive tiers and Sony would have to come up with something else for the base tier.

@Atzenkiller: Actually, it is a free to play game meaning as long as you keep paying that sub you can play, so it is not 100% free. But it has some value.

@Atzenkiller: Nah, they'd just create a new even more expensive tier for it. I wouldn't be surprised if by this point in two years they create two separate tiers for online gaming-one being for minor online features and basic co-op and another for live service games and MMOs-which we'll have to pay even more for.

@Barighm: PS+ Premium already cost more than Gamepass Ultimate and the latter includes EA + along with Gamepass while the former only has the games from their own sub.

However having said that my guess is eventually both subscriptions will cost more in the future.

They are not free but I am happy to add them to my PS+ rental library. Mass Effect Legendary Edition has already been on another rental sub Gamepass Ultimate for more than a year now though.

@firedrakez: A PS+ release is more reliable though. There is no risk of the game being cycled out and, unlike Xbox, if there is a fire or something at MS you don't have to worry about losing access to the game (or the rest of your games, for that matter). I've had PS+ games work for years without online connectivity (although the PS does keep track of how long your sub is supposed to last, so if it runs out and you remain offline, the PS remembers you're not supposed to have PS+ by that point).

The game's release on GP is also kind of a moot point since people don't ask for collections just to rent them on some digital service. They want to own them. If you haven't played ME by now, you're either very young or you just don't care.

@Barighm: I already own ME Legendary Edition on Origin on PC as well as the original games on Xbox and PC. Those are not rentals like the ones given away on PS+ which require a sub.

EA Play is part of Gamepass Ultimate as well so you can access more EA games than just ME LE on it and they don't have an expiration option because of that arrangement.

Also Playstation requires a PS+ sub to use their cloud saves so unlike Xbox which allows you to use the cloud to save your games from one generation to the next even without a XBL Gold sub, you can't find the saves you played offline in the past in the cloud on your current PS console.

@firedrakez: I agree as I also subscribe to EA Pro which is not offered in GP only the base version but it is still good for me as I use GP for other purposes.
