PlayStation State Of Play Announcements: FF7 Remake Intergrade PS5, Returnal, And More

The latest State of Play stream revealed Final Fantasy VII Remake's PS5 edition, Returnal gameplay, new Deathloop trailer, and much more.

In the final week of February, Sony hosted another State of Play livestream. The latest showcase focused on 10 upcoming PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games, which included Returnal, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, and the surprise announcement of the PS5 edition of Final Fantasy VII: Remake - Intergrade. Now that the dust has settled, we have a complete breakdown of all the new games and reveals shown during the State of Play stream.

Prior to the livestream, Sony released a set of updates on the state of PS5 and the future of PlayStation VR. Sony confirmed that the PS VR will get a second iteration, this time with a new controller and single-cord connection design. The company also recently announced that PlayStation-exclusive Days Gone will make its way to PC this spring. PlayStation said more titles could find their way to PC in the near future, too. Unfortunately, not all the PlayStation news in the lead-up to the event was positive. The company is reportedly going to largely end original game development at its Japan Studio.

Security Breach is a first-person horror experience where you'll have to evade the roaming animatronics looking to kill you during the night. This is why I went to the other console. Playstation focus too much on indie games. Sure, they have God of War and a couple other great games. But, now they are releasing them to PC.

Just not worth it. Their network is subpar, and I constantly had issues with errors on multiple games on my PS4 and my PS4 pro. Downloading games from their store took eons, even with fiber and a DNS change in network settings and getting a 200 mb/s (hard wired)connection on the test internet connection on the PS4.

Using the Xbox one or Xbox series X, the speeds are considerably faster and more stable with the network aspect of things. Plus, I was not a fan of the UI on the playstation.

I went with the PS4 because of the BS Microsoft pulled on the launch with the always connected and Kinect bungle. That was eventually fixed. Years later. But, I stuck with the PS4, even upgraded to the pro. But, i noticed their game selection was becoming bleak and Microsoft was growing stronger.

I missed the great shooters like gears, halo, state of decay etc on xbox. PS had a bunch of indie games, which i could care less about, and apparently are still going that way. These appear to be more games that would be better fit for the switch.

@fatman98: MS likes pushing indie games too, bud. They actually get way more because of the PC side of things.

@Barighm: Yes, they have them as well.

But, I feel that a majority of the PS4 games were indie games. For myself, they just did not have enough of the big titles that I enjoy. Which is what I clarified above. I enjoyed the God of War and that was about it. All of the others were cross platform releases.

Microsoft had more of the games that were fun to me. I missed the Halo series, Gears series, State of Decay series, Fable series (which they just announced a new one coming out) when I was on the PS4. Plus, as I stated I got fed up with the constant errors and crappy download speeds of their network.

I noticed when I bought the new Xbox, the speeds to download and install games is 2-3x as fast as the PS4 pro was.

I get that people enjoy the PS over the Xbox, I am just stating what I noticed. Yes, they both have indie games. However, I noticed there are FAR more indie to AAA Sony release games to indie/ Microsoft AAA games. They seem to have more AAA games on Microsoft which suited my needs. As well as the gamepass and the system had the features were better than the PS5.

Plus I have had a bad track record with the hardware on PS4. Both, my PS4 and PS4 pro had their optical drive die. Also, my PS1, PS2 and PS3 had similar issues. Only had one Xbox 360 had a drive issue.

On a day where Sony should have shined, they instead crashed and burned....

Sony managed to self sabotage themselves with the worst ever State of Play....right before they announced they were practically handicapping their most culturally important Japanese asset Japan Studio.

Of course all this happens a day after Jim Ryan himself announced more Playstation games coming to PC and I quote "We are happy to bring more games to the PC"

Let's put some emphasis on the word HAPPY.

The pandemic and the failure to deal with it has led to many supply chain issues and work issues, which slows down game development. This isn't just true in gaming, it's a macroeconomic issue. I have a PS5 and, to be honest, none of these games interest me that much, but I'm still engrossed in Demon Souls (I will play every build) and I have a huge backlog anyway. Days Gone, God of War, Control are all way better on PS5 and I barely played those games. I'll also get the NBA game when it goes on sales, though it's sad the Lakers suck at the moment.

What are people honestly complaining about? Sony wasn't going to announce 40 exclusives on the console. The conference showed what is coming to the platform up until June. A few games have a later release date, but who cares? Ratchet, Returnal, and Horizon are good enough for me. I am sure there will be other games that will come out in the fall. What other big titles did you want to see announced? We already know that Santa Monica is working on a new God of War. Sucker Punch, Media Molecule, and Naughty Dog just came out with their games. Studio Bend is more than likely still working on a follow to Days Gone. This state of play was for games coming out in the next four months or so. That is fine. Sony and other developers have released quality games on PlayStation for over a year now. There is going to be a downturn at some point. You cannot keep the momentum going forever. Everyone wants 40 exclusives out on the new console its first. That is not realistic.

If this is the slowest Sony gets in terms of releases, then I am alright with it. We got a slew of games from Sony last year that I am sure not everyone played. The trend seems to be continuing this year albeit a slower pace.

@rushabs: What are you talking about? Nintendo has the most expensive software prices of any company. What is so hard about Sony's interface? the games and the game library are right there. If you have to update a game, you highlight the game and push options, then choose update software. State of Plays have never had E3 level announcements. Sony tried that format twice with State of Play and failed. Once Sony dialed back it back to talking in depth about a single title or being brief about a few titles, then the State of Play directs got better. Sony wasn't going to announce the next game from Media Molecule or Sucker Punch. The company is focused on the first half of this year, which is a good move. As we move closer to June, then talk other games coming out in fall and the winter of next year. That makes the most sense. Why sit there and show off non gameplay trailers for games that will not come out for a year and a half. This is what Microsoft has been doing. When is Avowed and Fable coming out? 2022-2023. I would rather have gaming companies focus on the current year than talk about games that will not come out for forever. Sony was infamous for this back in the PS3 and early PS4 era. We first saw a demo showing Kara from Detroit in 2013. The game did not come out until 2018. We first saw Heavy Rain and LA Noir in 2006. Those games did not come until 2010. Killzone 2 was first shown in 2005. The game did not come out until 2009. Tekken 6 was first announced for PS3 in 2005. The console version did not come out until 2009. Dreams was announced in 2013. The game did not come out until 2020.

We did not know a whole lot about Returnal or Deathloop. Now we know a bit more about games that are coming out in the spring and have hard firm release dates. We got a sneak peak into summer with Kena. I thought Kena would come out around May as well, but the calendar is pretty packed with other titles. Guilty Gear Stride is on the way as way in April, so that is cool. The first half of the the year has Returnal, Deathloop, Guilty Gear Stride, Ratchet and Clank, and Kena will all be out be right as we go into the second half of the year. Kena is the only game that is further out along with Horizon. Gran Turismo and God of War will be out next year, but I am sure there are a few titles that we do not know about.

Xbox does not have any games exclusive to the series S or X. Its biggest title is also coming to Xbox One. Returnal, Ratchet, and Deathloop are games only available on PS5. Nintendo has been port city for almost a year now. Most of Nintendo's games are coming out in the summer of this year with other big titles like No More Heroes 3 and Bayonetta 3 that will "try" to hit this year.

When it comes to gaming, software is king, and Sony as well as exclusive third parties have been putting out a lot of great games even though some of them hold no interest for me. This is especially true during a pandemic. Sony has not delayed that many games for long periods of time. Other companies like Bioware flat out gave up on their games like Anthem. Bethesda has not done anything amazing outside of Id and Tango Games. Tango Games is current working on a PS5 game, and the next Doom will not be out for three years. Every other Bethesda team is not too credible at this point including Arkane, so I am still iffy on Deathloop. Machinehead Games lost their touch after The New Order, Arkane released Prey, which could not be beaten due to bugs. Fallout and Elder Scrolls have been unoptimized for years. Double Fine has been working on Psychonauts 2 for five years now?

Sony will run complete dry eventually. It is the cycle of life. The momentum the company has had last year as well as this has been insane. If next year is a little bare bones, who cares? I doubt most people will play everything.

@firedrakes: I am sure sony is full aware of the fact they needed more space. But it is expensive. They do not have microsofts infinitely deep pockets to absorb the cost. It may suck, but I wonder how many people are actually having problems with space versus how many people are just repeating other peoples complaints. It doesn't seem like there are enough people who actually own a ps5, to match the high number of complaints on every website

After a disastrous State of Play (more like State of Multiplatform Games instead) Sony couldn't have come up with a worst event.

Disappointing is just putting it mildly.

Plus the news that Sony is inevitably closing their Japanese Studio is reason enough to fire CEO Jim Ryan and kick him on his way out the door

They should have more PS5 standalone titles, it is getting silly. There is no real incentive to buy new hardware when everything is available to play on your PS4.

@kutraz: Ratchet and Clank, the new God Of War, Gran Turismo 6, Project Athia, etc. There is reason to buy the PS5 but obviously its gonna be a transition with most of the userbase still being on the previous gen, and the availability of next gen consoles is at an all time low.

Pretty sure "Sifu" is short for SIck as **** because omg that game looks badass. I really hope it's not as small of a title as it looks because except for 'maybe' Solar Ash, it was the only thing that looked good in this presentation.

Watching it live right now.

So far they have their work cut out for them in terms of getting gamers excited about anything.

There is still time so there is a chance they could turn it around but like 2021 so far this presentation is starting off on shaky ground.
