What to expect from PlayStation State of Play

The main event for the first State of Play for 2023 will be a new look at Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Sony says that new gameplay details and updates on the Rocksteady-developed game will be shown off, providing an in-depth look at what fans can expect from the title.

Only a handful of details on the game have been revealed so far, including it being the final performance of the late Kevin Conroy as Batman, and gameplay has largely been kept under wraps. Several weeks ago, screenshots of Suicide Squad's live service elements were leaked online, showing off a battle pass system that is focused on cosmetics and a currency for each anti-hero.

The game hasn't received a concrete release date yet after it was delayed from 2022 to Spring 2023 due to Rocksteady requiring more time to polish the experience.

"We've made the difficult decision to delay Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League to Spring 2023," former Rocksteady director and co-founder Sefton Hill said at the time. "I know a delay is frustrating but that time is going into making the best game we can. I look forward to bringing the chaos to Metropolis together."

Alongside that game and more Destiny 2: Lightfall goodness, we are going to get a look at PlayStation VR 2 games. The headset just launched, and Sony is looking to make a big splash early with the peripheral.

@johnny0779: I'm relieved to hear that lol, too many games right now and not enough time, that's one off the list.

I think this will be super heavy PSVR2, both the hardware and games. So far the hardware has gotten really great reviews.

I bet the state of play for May will be more about FF 16 around June, and the other AAA games for this fall. Like Death Stranding 2. I work till 7pm will not be able to catch it live.

@jenovaschilld: As someone with motion sickness issues, I'm quite happy to hear PSVR2 does a consistent 120fps and is pretty close to 4k. I still don't like the idea of a headset that is locked to a single console with a limited catalogue though.

@Barighm: I also suffer from motion sickness when gaming. Don't even get me started on games like 007, turok, and Prey (cherokee vomiting simulator) from back in the day. The first few VR devices also caused me to hurl, but each generation they kept getting better. Who knows in a couple more gens, I will be at the nursing home playing beat saber with my crew getting mad scores and breaking hips.

I do not mind this VR headset locked to a certain platform, that is something I except. Just like any new tech brought into any industry, whether is a farming thresher, a laundry enzyme, a vehicle exhaust system, or even the great VCR/VHS, DVD vs video cd, or blu ray vs HD dvd, these platform developed hardware helps innovation, competition, pricing, and technologic leaps forward.

Sony, just like any other platform, is bringing a heavily subsidized piece of hardware to consumers in the hopes of that almighty %30 per software. The consumer will have to decide if the VR ecosystem will be right for them. Like a publisher betting money on a new game, or a new artist, or new novelist, it would be hard pressed to create or invest in a new IP that would then be used by your competitors to help them make their sales.

This will hopefully force other platforms to develop their own, maybe even innovate the tech by leaps and bounds while continually reducing its costs and reach to consumers.

One thing I do wish is that the new VR2 were able to play the older VR games, 8th gen, right out of the box. But the tech is as different as cartridges were to cdrom. VR2 simple has way to many new features and ui. BUT, publishers are quickly working to revise their 8th gen games for 9th gen. At a cost of course :) So the library should grow faster this gen then last.

Not super interested to be honest. I mean, if they show Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, or Death Stranding 2, that'd be great, but I want to see Sony first party stuff more than anything else.

PSVR needs a AAA lineup.

Imagine Half Life, Dead Space, Doom Eternal, Bioshock, Metroid Prime with full PSVR2 support. Yeah, it's fantasy but now I have a boner.

@id0ntkn0w7: Bioshock Trilogy VR is what I desperately want. The PS5 could easily run it in VR. Honestly RE Village & GT7 is already a pretty great AAA lineup.

@Zandeus: slim but great, yeah. And since I've spent all of 5 minutes in VR maybe I should splurge and get one. It would allow me to slowly get used to it since there aren't a whole lot of announced games
