PlayStation Showcase Event May 2023: Start Time, Games, How To Watch, And What To Expect

Get ready for more than an hour of game reveals during this week's PlayStation showcase.

Sony will host its latest PlayStation Showcase event today, May 24, and it's expected to be a very big event rather than one of its shorter indie-focused streams. This State of Play-style event, given its proximity to the Not-E3 season, means it will most likely contain big announcements and game reveals. This one will focus on what's next across the PS5 and PSVR 2. [Update: The event is over, and you can check out all the PlayStation Showcase announcements in our recap, as well as in the links below.]

When is the PlayStation Showcase?

The PlayStation Showcase will run for more than an hour, beginning at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET on May 24, and it will be available to watch on the official PlayStation Twitch and YouTube channels, as well as GameSpot's YouTube channel, embedded below.

  • 1 PM PT
  • 3 PM CT
  • 4 PM ET
  • 9 PM BST

What to expect

What we do know is that Sony has some big games in development, and after Final Fantasy XVI launches on June 22 for PS5, all eyes will be on Marvel's Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac, and possibly details on its Wolverine game. Spider-Man 2 has been rumored to be gearing up for a September launch, and the PlayStation Showcase will likely be the best event in which to make an official release date announcement.

Beyond Insomniac, there's also Naughty Dog expanding on its post-apocalyptic universe with The Last of Us multiplayer game, Guerrilla Games is rumored to also be venturing into that space with a multiplayer Horizon game, and a first look at what Jade Raymond's studio, Haven Games, has been up to since it was acquired by Sony.

Sony also has also confirmed that third-party content will be shown, as well as several games from its indie partners. Mortal Kombat 1 is out in September, and with Sony positioning itself as a hub for fighting game fans, PlayStation Showcase is another great venue to get a first look at gameplay for NetherRealm's upcoming brawler. Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding 2 and Tekken 8 could also appear, but the next biggest third-party game could easily be Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Details on the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake have been incredibly slim since its initial reveal, but ever since director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that the game is in "full production" it's had a tentative Winter 2023 release date. Square Enix probably won't want to release the game too close to Final Fantasy XVI and risk cannibalizing sales, but a more concrete release date and new gameplay would be a great way to close out the event.

Lastly, Sony has room to provide updates on which of its games will be headed to PC next. Fans have also been hoping to see a Bloodborne PC port for years, although there remains no indication of that happening.

Great show, so many titles of interest. MGS I'd rather want em to start with first ps1 game but I take any new mgs at this point, thought they gave up on the franchise.

Alan wake 2, never ever did I think the game would look so good, got chills watching it. Though I thought it be xbox exclusive? Like the original used to be.

Neva and phantom blade 0 gonna be titles i'll be keeping an eye on for sure.

Seeing Bungie logo while watching marathon video made me wonder, didnt seem interesting enough considering I love bungie.

MGS3 just breaks me... it's one of my favourite games of all time, the best Metal Gear game for me (and I love the first with all my heart), and that music... I would like to be indifferent... I just can´t...

Not even one single player story based first person shooter. Mostly RPGs, a Ghost of Tsushima clone, another remake, Alan Wake 2 and Spiderman 2. Why can't they make decent single player first person shooters anymore? Spiderman 2 and Alan Wake 2 look good. Snake eater I played years ago and there was no gameplay so am I supposed to be excited about that. It really annoys me that Sony left Killzone and Resistance to die with nothing more from them. They think Call of Duty is their big FPS in their minds but it can be finished in one sitting, in an afternoon and the multiplayer is repetitive and every multiplayer FPS plays the same. They still have not one first person shooter that comes close to Halo after all these years and haven't bothered trying. I might have to go back to Xbox for first person shooters because Sony don't have any and aren't bothering. I want a campaign and am not interested in multiplayer first person shooters and am sick of the same kind of games coming out all the time. Half-life 2, Doom 3, Halo 2, 3 and 4, Gears of War franchise, those were proper games to get excited about. Cyberpunk was exciting, though technically it was a mess, it looked amazing to me and got me interested. Nothing stood out to me as exciting. Spiderman 2 looks great but it's more of the same really. I suppose if the System Shock 2 remake ever comes out I'll play that because Sony have completely abandoned my favourite genre and don't care.

Metal Gear Solid 3? IS it really too much to ask for remakes to start at the beginning? Half the gaming audience won't even know the story leading up to MGS3.

@g796hjhjh556:

I think what happens in mgs3 is first in the mgs timeline, so they won't miss out much. They just won't know what happens after mgs3.

I saw so many people writing "What about Bloodborne?" in the chat at the end of the stream that it seemed like Bloodborne was static text lol.

I've become conditioned to expect nothing from these events, yet still walk away feeling disappointed. Couldn't sense much passion from any of these projects. Feels like they're making games just to pay the bills, without real love for the medium. I'm sure a few of those games will turn out okay, but who really got excited watching these trailers? Where's the magic?

Also, games aren't really allowed to shine in this format. It made it feel every game was disposable. Why not show us what's actually cool about them?

I miss E3 and console gaming being good.

@Tiwill44: Kind of felt similarly. There just wasn't anything AWESOME there. I mean, thats cool too right, I mean they can't all be amazing. I have XBOX X and PS5 and I often find myself playing for a bit and feeling like it's been a while since I was like OH MAN THIS IS GREAT :) But again, time will tell.

That sounds like a you problem, dude. I got plenty of tingles during that presentation. Alan Wake, Dragon's Dogma, that game where you build the town that looks like Zelda...Heck, giant robot mechs fighting dragons? And I've been eagerly awaiting a release date for Relink.

Sounds to me like gaming just isn't for you anymore.

@Barighm: I still love video games. Even discovering ambitious but janky Early Access games like Shadows of Doubt, or Starship Troopers: Extermination which is a 16 player co-op FPS... there's games out there that offer something new and/or fun.

I started Cyberpunk 2077 the other day, and while I won't defend the state the game released in, it's actually a great game now. The story isn't as intellectual as Deus Ex, but it has its own tone and worldbuilding that I enjoyed from the anime, and it plays kinda like an open-world Deus Ex, which is a good thing that hadn't been done before.

There's many games I'm eagerly anticipating as well, though many of them are indie and aren't being promoted by the big 3. The type of game I would buy a console for aren't really being made anymore, which might be a more accurate way to say that gaming isn't for me anymore.

But the reason I watch these showcases, which are supposed to be big events, is to see new exciting gameplay from the biggest studios, that might make me want to buy the newest console, or at least make me excited for a new big game to play on PC. Instead, they tend to be padded with filler and air. I mean, I've had that Plucky Squire game wishlisted on Steam since June of 2022. What was the point of seeing it again?

These past few years, have you noticed how the biggest games in these showcases have been remakes? If you love video games, you shouldn't praise them when they're being lame.

Maybe stop seeing just the remakes?

I'm constantly on the hunt for new games, that's why I have no trouble finding them.

@jpme226: This is what jealousy looks like, folks.

As every game in that presentation touches on practically every kind of game you can find, by your logic, it's an absolutely boring time to own any console. Of any kind. Anywhere.

@Barighm: No, @Barighm This is what having a personal opinion looks like. As an owner of a Gaming PC, XBOX SERIES X and a PS5 I feel like I can accurately speak about whether or not that PS5 "showcase" featured any games that look exciting or intriguing to me...and while I hate that my opinion on it has insulted your sensitivities, it didn't.

@Barighm: Yes. D4 is a guilty pleasure type game. You know it, I know it, everybody knows it. Something highly polished that gives you a ton of hours of involved gameplay, thanks to all the possible builds you can make and loot you can hunt for with friends. I think a lot of people are craving a new game like that right now, and there aren't many alternatives to the specific gameplay and aesthetic it's going for.

such refreshing to see this, if thus was xbox showcase, you would have a teaser of gears 34, halo 25 and forza 62. as well as 15 different colored controllers and how they are pretending to stay relavent.

@mediastupid1: Your bias is strong tho.

Instead of commenting just about the PS showcase and its shortcommings, you go out and bring Xbox into this?

Maybe you reserve your low opinion of Xbox games to after the show?

If the Xbox show is good, will your admit you were wrong?

@sladakrobot: Absolutely ill admit I'm wrong 100 percent if they do make good games and I'll make sure to call you out in respect because I'm a man of honor, but since 2002 xbox has been an absolute joke, running off the failures of the dreamcast. The whole system was made from the child rapist gates being jealous. So that there always gave me bad feelings. Nintendo has NEVER let me down, same with Sony.Xbox has always been a parasite in the gaming Industry and all they do is latch on to something make it worse and bring it down with them. spensor himself was part of the reason dreamcast crashed, so the times won't change.Everyone has and is entitled to their opinion and I respect that and I gave mine. call it biased call it what ever. but xbox has and always will be a joke in my eyes. Give me Cdi or 3do over their trash ANYDAY.

@mediastupid1: Phil Spencer has never worked or was involved in Sega of America or their marketing.

This is a huge factual mistake of yours to believe that and it seems it led you to dislike everything Xbox.

You have some sort of sympathy from my side in being upset about the Dreamcasts failure as i am still a huge fan of the console and its games...

Now, since you know that its not true...does it change anything to you?

Will you evaluate your decisions/opinions?

You are comparing alcohol, drugs and nicotine(addictive making consumables which are responsible for health, social and psychic issues) with games...you have to do a mental gymnastics to get to that point.

@mediastupid1: These games are outdated, isometric rpgs are very niche and its no wonder how FO3 killed it when the franchise gone 3D back then.

Sure, they have bugs but given their size its unavoidable.

Luckily, Bethesda works close with modders and most annoying things are ironed out.

The modding community so passionate like its crazy.

I mean, all of Bethesdas RPGs still has an active community...you dont have such a following if you make trash games.
