Any one know if Sony is making a VR 1.5? Why would I buy this if something better is a year or two away?

I think the lobby should try a different method of showing the crew the Camera Angle/Picture. It looks very unprofessional when they continuously look away to check it.

Just my 5 cents, Keep up the good work, shows cool. :)

Hey what is that huge advertisial pic on front page about? 1 person using VR with a sofa full of people playing from tv? They really want to tell us that VR is somehow ultra-social experience?

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: It's called asynchronous multiplayer. Where have you been? VR is a lot more social of an experience than you might think.

When you have 36 million units out there this will sell and sell a lot. Once there's a game I want play on it I'll buy it. It's not just Sony investing in various it's many companies and universities in a wide range of fields. Comparisons to Move or Kinect are silly.

I'm just disappointed that it doesn't come with the camera (no my PS4 did not come with one), so the $400 "value" seems deceptive. But honestly, if developers make worthwhile games I'll pay it. That's all there is to it. Give me some killer apps and I'll hop on the VR bandwagon.

You guys talk about how Sony drops support on everything... Seriously? The Move and camera haven't ever been dropped from support, developers just didn't use those products as a main point of many games (not unlike Kinect), the PS phone we can all agree needed to go, the PSP is over TEN YEARS OLD, the Vita still has a ton of 3rd party support and is regularly updated - hardly unsupported, PS TV is a niche product only really for people who wanted to stream from other parts of their house, and 3D isn't something people developed FOR it's just an option developers can choose to mess with, and most blu ray movies come in 3D versions as 3D movies are still HUGE so don't give me that BS. You really expect any company to support the same product for many years, especially when nobody's using it? Sony didn't "give up" on Vita because they were lazy and hate their customers, they seized 1st party full development on games because it was a waste of resources that could go into something more people enjoy, since the Vita "failed" only because the competition is heavily owned by Apple/Android and Nintendo. It's called trimming the fat, Sony does it, MS does it, Apple does it (RIP iPod classic!), Samsung does it. Get over it, VR isn't just a little trinkydink toy you mess around with for a couple hours then get bored, it's an entirely new way of experiencing media and unless you've used VR first hard it's pretty difficult to grasp what that really means. There's TONS of money from the biggest companies in the game pouring support into VR, no it won't sell tens of millions week one like everyone here says it needs to, yes it's relatively "expensive" if you don't have the best source of income, but this is the first generation of actual VR headsets, it needs to grow like any console, phone, television, automobile, etc. You absolutely have the right to be skeptical, and if you don't want to be a day one buy, that's probably the smarter choice, but comparing something like VR in general (Vive, Oculus, even PSVR) to something like PSP or the PS phone is absolutely asinine. I say give it at least 4-5 years to grow, if it doesn't go anywhere and people hate it then I'm wrong simply put, but we won't know until then.

@hoyholyhoy: Thank you so much for your sense. I'd like to add something too. The PS1 was discontinued in 2006, roughly 12 years after it's release. The PS2 was discontinued in 2013, 13 years after it's release. The PS3 is still going, and will continue to do so for a few years. Anybody who says Sony drops things early is clearly wrong, and needs to look at the facts. Once again, thanks.

@lcrava: agree, I can have at least 4 of us sitting together and going at each other without a need of this! Or we would have to move away from one that moving like a drunk and technically blind, that can hit us. No thank you.

Most great game doesn't need VR. I remember early Batman games that can play in 3D TV, I'm sure nobody remember or bother to play in 3D mode.

@lcrava: That sounds like a sensible decision. Let the early adopters waste all the money so the R&D improves alot quicker and version 2 releases much sooner that is actually worth buying.

By then there might be a game worth buying for it too.

@retron57: I would compare it more with 3D gaming, like what the 3DS and PS3 supported. I'm sure the same people itching for unnecessary gaming tech will jump on this like no-ones buisness.

Motion controls however, like touch screens changes the fundamentals. Though currently inferior to a decent gamepad, at least they change the gameplay.

Whether as 3D and VR only actually change your perspective on the game. Giving you visual-superficial changes.

I'd estimate 5% the PlayStation 4 fanbase will get VR. Ultimately it will likely be a flop. Mostly guessing this, as noone I know is taking VR seriously, and rightfully so. It's a wasteful gimmick, and a pricy one.

@RSM-HQ: I kinda agree, I don't expect VR to be a huge hit, more of a niche product for the same type of people who buy giant gaming PCs and expensive input peripherals, but ... it OTOH, it could be very cool for those with the money/etc. I thought 3D was downright stupid, but VR seems like something I'd want to try someday... unlike 3D it seems to have the potential to really increase immersion.

In any case it looks like Sony is taking a pretty practical and level-headed approach to it, going for a medium point with decent quality and a decent price, taking advantage of a large installed base of PS4 owners, making good use of their experience in optics and display manufacturing. If any VR product succeeds it seems likely to be theirs.

Unfortunately for the future of VR, judging from the announcements made so far it looks like making a game VR-compatible requires a fair bit of work, so if VR isn't an immediate success, it seems likely to fall into the no-content-no-users catch-22 trap. Maybe this problem will go away someday when gaming harder is powerful enough to make VR support easier.

@snogglethorpe: Recently upgraded my P.C. for modern gaming purposes so don't agree with the first statement. I'm no Elitist/ MasterRace troII but P.C. gaming has its appeal. And that's RTS and FP gaming built around mouse and keyboard.

As for VR. I believe Sony Computer Entertainment just like taking risks regardless of the payoff. PS phone, 3D gaming, EyeToy, PSNow. The SCE motto is clearly "try everything".

Personally I've tried VR at PAX South and just made me seasick lol. Plenty of people talk how immersed VR is, lending to the experience. Which is exactly what everyone stated about 3D, and it got old very quickly.

But considering it's not actually a game changer mechanically, you'd have to be pretty bored of how you view gaming now to take interest. VR to me, like 3D is for the casual crowd that want new technology regardless of what it really offers. A year after release about 80% the purchased headsets will be discarded quicker than you can say "Power Glove".

I think that this is too much for PS owners and consequently that means failure for the product. A peripheral that costs more than the console is no good thing. Only really good software can save this from obscurity now.

@gotrekfabian: its the price they said it would be, same as their console at launch... its also 1/3 to 1/2 cheaper than other cr headsets, not counting hardware to run them.

They have 88 confirmed titles for tje launch window..

@Mirimon78: Still too expensive for this market. Mark my words PS VR is destined to failure. The games are nothing short of tech demos currently and untilna killer app is released the masses won't buy into this.

@gotrekfabian: too expensive? At 1/3 and 1/2 the cost of the others....? It could have been less had the others set a lower price point.. none the less it honestly is a fajr price, especially for a starting price....

Tech demos? We have been playing some of them for 2 years already... they aren't mere tech demos...

The masses have already bought into it, units are already soldout in some regions.

I marked your words... nothing to take note of.

@Mirimon78: Pre-orders mean nothing, until the device is launched we won't really know whether this will be a success or not.

The fact that this is cheaper than other VR sets also means nothing; it is a motion sensor headset with an oled screen (and a small one at that). How much do you think that is really worth? I understand that the development requires refunding but they are charging well over the odds of what a PS owner will pay. Remember that most PS owners are still reliant on their parents to fund their hobby.

@gotrekfabian: pre orders mean something, especially when they are themselves based on money down. They were certainly counted for other product metrics and somehow now they are an invalid look into consumer desire and intent?

Er.... all ve headsets use oled, and motion sensors... its how they SENSE MOTION (which os a vague term, several types of meters are used )... small? Sigh... I won't even bother with the 4 paragraphs to inform you about that.....

How much is it really worth?? Good question... thing is, unlike a onsole this is more like a tv, the manufacturers make their money on hardware sales here, not the software because these are not platorms. That in mind, sony launching it at first kust on their platform needs to be taken into account, they may or may mot be selling at a loss/profit... for various reasons. It seems all the tech analysts are in the sane line, this is appropriately priced, while they were all shocked at how high the others were priced.

@Mirimon78: Pre-orders are not money down. The funds are only taken when the product is dispatched, companies like to use the figures in order to make a product seem more successful than it is and, in turn, the product gains more advertising which can lead to more sales. Many people just place an order if they are in any way on the fence about the product and then cancel further down the line. Take a look at how many people do this same practice with video games just to get into a beta! Figures can be manipulated and can be very misleading in the world of business; don't believe everything you read.

As for telling me about all VR sets using oled and motion sensors: did you even read my comment or did you not understand my point? Here it is for you again: a small oled screen coupled with a motion sensor is NOT expensive to produce. And I do not need any 'education' from you on what VR is or how it works thank you.

For the record Sony's device being lower priced than Vive/Occulus Rift etc does not make it a good price. The other devices were extortionately priced in the first place. It is a good move by Sony but I still believe that the price is way above what should have been charged. Eventually the production costs for these devices will be revealed to the public one way or another and you will understand my point.

@Mirimon78: Uneducated? Haha, you have no idea. Not having created a VR set does not mean that I don't know the costs of manufacturing said devices and the cost of resources. The only hidden cost, as I stated previously, is the development phase.

As for these units being 100 down, you are wrong. There may be a few areas that are charging upfront for preorder but not everywhere is. My country, the UK, for example is not and does not do so for orders you have not yet received. More fool anyone who does this.

Try to see the other side of the story occasionally, you are nothing short of blinkered otherwise.

PS Sort out the grammar and spelling issues with your post before you call someone uneducated.

@gotrekfabian: actually, your country specifically sold out of psvr in minutes on you amazon....£100 down there..

minutes-on-amazon-uk/1100-6435707/

Money down on a preorder is common, and helps soak up loss should people cancel after the retailer has already purchased the product for shipping....

P.s. get educated, and get over yourself. A typo on a cell phone is less of an issue compared to your fanatical ignorance.

@Mirimon78: Wrong. It was GAME, the UK's equivalent of GameStop, that were charging £100 for preorders, not every retailer was charging for the preorder. Merely quoting a page from GS without reading it fully huh? Get educated.

PS I'm done with this, don't reply back because I won't respond. My initial post wasn't something you agree with; get over yourself already.

@Daian: It actually looks good but this is one thing i would never buy. To me VR is all about the experience and i can pay money and have an experience with VR where you have to physically walk/run around a computer generated environment in a huge warehouse and you actually feel like you are there.

As you are not physically moving anywhere here it's just boring though i guess less tiring.
