PlayStation VR Exceeding Expectations at GameStop, More Stock Coming

Sony's virtual reality headset has sold more than GameStop expected.

GameStop announced today that Sony's virtual reality headset has already exceeded its expectations. It's set to receive more stock of the PlayStation VR for the holiday season.

"PS VR is off to a great start at GameStop, having already exceeded our early expectations," senior VP of merchandising Bob Puzon said in a press release. "Due to the popularity of the system with our customers, we have received additional units for holiday."

Puzon pointed out that those "eager to try the immersive interactive experience" can try it out with one of GameStop's in-store demos, which are available at 115 locations in the US. Best Buy also has demos in multiple stores, and unlike UK retailer Game, neither GameStop or Best Buy charges its customers for VR demos.

Sony's official PlayStation VR bundle comes with the headset, two Move controllers, the newly designed PlayStation Camera, and PlayStation VR Worlds. GameStop offers its own bundles, with its complete starter bundle that includes the older model of PlayStation Camera and no game for $493. If you want to get a game in addition to all that, there are $500 bundles that include either Until Dawn: Rush of Blood and Batman: Arkham VR, which you can find here and here respectively.

No Caption Provided

One $890 bundle brings together everything you need with eight different games. Those games are Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, Batman: Arkham VR, Battlezone VR, Loading Human: Chapter 1, PlayStation VR Worlds, Rigs: Mechanized Combat League, Driveclub VR, and Eve: Valkyrie.

In GameSpot's review, critic Jimmy Thang said he got motion sick in many of the PlayStation VR's launch titles. If you're "dying to get" a PS VR, he recommends the $500 bundle that includes everything you need. He also believes that "if you have a PS4 and are simply curious about VR" that you should wait until more games are released.

"While there are a handful of fun titles, there's nothing that I've played at launch so far to indicate to me that the PS VR is a must-buy right now," he continued. "For everyone else, I'd recommend saving up for a better reality."

You can get a wider view of the headset's critical reception in GameSpot's review roundup. Furthermore, all of GameSpot's PlayStation VR game reviews can be found here.

Completely understandable. I mean, all VR devices are currently in the "alpha" phase and therefore all more or less sh*tty, so why not go with the cheapest one.

Too many dumb haters and jealous fanboys in here. I own a PSVR and love the hell out of it. It adds a lot immersion to the games I like playing horror, space sims, driving games, etc. a great device if you can afford it. People here hating are either too broke to afford it and are coming up with excuses or ignorant fanboys. I own a gaming PC to play space sims like Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen and truth is Eve Valkyrie on PSVR has been stealing my time from those games just because of how immersive it is in VR. VR is not only awesome for games it's also awesome for movies and other applications, I've been use mine a ton for watching 3D VR movies. Nice to see it is doing well, it's currently sold out on Amazon and won't be on sale again till the 14th of November. The more people try it out I'm sure they'll love it. PSVR haters are sounding like Luddites. VR is the future guys and it isn't going anywhere, it will only continue to grow in market size and become more successful.

Just remember, you get what you pay for, like they say especially in this day and age. Go the cheap route and you can expect a less than stellar experience.

unless they release a lot of quality content for it (and by that I mean immersive games that last more then 6 hours), they can forget their gimmick. I'd rather play the Virtual Boy

Try the free demo of star fox zero on Wii U. If that doesn't strike your fancy, then neither will PlayStation VR. Valkyrie is a 'not as good' Starfox game. Just a helpful tip for those of us hesitant to blow $500 big ones.

This is BS. PSVR is already a failure. You see them on store shelves and amazon in stock since day one.

With the strict budget I am on, I prefer to purchase the PS4 Pro rather than thePSVR that costs the same price.

What do you guys think?

Supply and demand. Not much demand so not many on the shelves. We really need to see numbers instead they are moving. This sounds like more of the hype train.

I am simply confounded by VR.

I should be their ideal audience....I game almost full time....I love many genres and am always on the lookout for new, great gaming experiences......disposable income is not an issue....I have no interest in VR based on any game that I have seen on demo...I game for games, not for hardware....show me games or this is going to die like all the rest....Wii...move controllers...Kinect......going to die.

Time for Sony to step up; they are the one with the most to gain/ lose here....3rd parties have very little at stake....MS has the industry heft and dollars to pull this off, but they're concentrating on making 1,000 more shooters.....if Sony can't get decent games out the door, not the demo garbage I have seen so far...and games with actual release dates, unlike what they have done over the last 3 years...this is gone for another 3-5 years.

Almost certain this is what happened with Vive and Oculus as well in terms of pre-orders.

Right before they both tanked.

I don't believe anything Gamestop says. The truth is likely the opposite and they're trying to offload the units they're stuck with while simultaneously explaining why each store has a bunch of them lying around. If this was in an official quarterly performance report, I might believe it because then it carries legal weight for them to tell the truth.

I know that the smart move is to wait until the playstation vr gets some good games, and not just mindless fillers that it released with (I bought mine at midnight launch). The sad thing about that is, it also contributes to developers not wanting to spend time, and resources on a system that has a smaller customer base, and because of that its possible that it could actually kill off the medium with lack of support. Sony has a reputation of not sticking around if the money starts to trickle, and their money woes gives them cause to abandon ship before their consumer base feels justified about buying a system that is quite expensive, yet under supported.

IF I ever get a VR headset, it'll probably be the PSVR. It may not be the best, but I think it currently offers the most bang for the buck. I'll wait at least a year before I jump on that bandwagon. Frankly, as cool as it looks, there really aren't any games for it right now or in development (that I know of) that I'm dying to play. I hope it pans out and VR is here to stay, but I'm still very skeptical.

Terrible PR spin. Its selling so well. We have extra units available for sale! WOW! If it was actually selling that well like they say it is. It would be sold out consistently until the holidays and shortly after.

@fattiesgonewild: Not necessarily. The VR device wont actually show the high demand until people invite their friends over to play. You've got to factor in that very few people will have even seen the device, or what it does. What they claim about it being a hot commodity probably represents the amount of orders that have gone out for online purchase from their websites, and Sony limits the amount of headsets that each vendor can advertise. With new emerging technology its impossible to know how, when, where, and how many units will sell.

Traded my PSVR in yesterday for the same value I paid for it. Tried various games and they are all 30 mins - 1hr experiences at best. Resolution is poor, lenses need cleaned regularly during play. The clincher in terms of trading it in came when I realised there is only 1 AAA game on the horizon, Resident Evil. Agree with some of the comments that it feels one generation too early in terms of the tech. Using my trade in cash to buy a 4k Tv to play the PS4 Pro on.

@hawkensha: Your statement is subjective, and it wreaks of PC system bias, and nothing more. The Playstation VR, and a good PC, arent devices that perform the same function. The VR device is made for casual consumers, and building a good PC is definitely not something casual gamers want to do at all. Besides, most casual consumers have home PC's, and what they do with them is something that hasnt changed for decades. Advising them to skip out on new entertainment technology, for something that casual consumers would only use to surf the net, is preposterous. They can do that now without spending any money at all. Even if you said " I was talking about building a good PC for a higher end VR device", its a horrible idea. They are more likely to say "Why would I want to spend all that money on something that I dont know if I'll like?" . In the eyes of consumers, that would be a far greater waste of money.

Hey, too all y'all that have it: I know that they say it "fits over glasses," but, if you wear glasses, especially for distance, like I do, do you feel that your glasses aren't...working? I mean, my glasses are for seeing things that are far away, and the screens in VR...aren't. How's that work? Anyone have any issues with that?

@olddadgamer: I had issues with focusing while wearing my glasses and there was light seeping in at the bottom due to my specs being in the way. But that was still far better than using the PSVR with my contacts in. My eyes felt dry and strained almost immediately while wearing lenses.

I like my PSVR but it's honestly not worth it right now. There's no real killer game for it. I have Batman, Thumper and Battlezone. They are all cool, but are not full-size games worthy of the large investment.

Also, the initial setup and management of all the stuff... The headset, camera and motion controllers will be off-putting to average people. You just have to get used to calibrating things and adjusting the headset a little each time and being able to feel your way around to grab the controls and things you need while you play.

For me personally, only Driveclub VR made me feel a little sick at first. The more I play the more I'm getting used to it and can go for longer sessions.

One negative though is the low resolution of the headset. Things are noticeably blurry and its really bad in some games like Driveclub which honestly gave me a headache due to straining to see things in the distance.

In the end I hope VR is successful because it is a very immersive experience however I also can't help but think it was 1 large hardware jump away from being what it really could be (and no, I don't think PS4 Pro is going to give it that boost).

@rasterror: Scarce. I can't order one on Amazon or bestbuy.com. I tried doing a product search for best buy and it turned up 0 PSVRs within a three hundred mile radius. Every Gamestop where I live, and there's a bunch of them, is sold out.
