As it does every year, Google has now released its "Year in Search" report for 2016, revealing the products, stories, and people that were searched the most around the world in the past year. Google ranks its list using the term "Trending." According to Time, in this context that means words and phrases that drove the most traffic over a sustained period of time this year compared to 2015.

Niantic's hugely popular mobile game, Pokemon Go, stands on the top of the chart for overall trending searches. Rounding out the top five were iPhone 7, Donald Trump, Prince, and Powerball. Another game cracked the Top 10 list, as the browser game Slither.io sits in the No. 10 spot.

Video games also show up in the Consumer Tech list, with the Nintendo Switch in the No. 9 position on that chart. Google doesn't appear to have released a video game-specific chart this year, but if that comes later, we'll report back with those details.

In terms of movies, the R-rated Ryan Reynolds movie Deadpool topped the trending search list, while Netflix's hit sci-fi show Stranger Things was No. 1 for TV shows.
