Pokemon Go's New Features Detailed, Here's What's Coming

Niantic Labs lays out its plans for the future.

One of the core elements of Pokemon games--trading--is currently missing from the newly launched mobile game, Pokemon Go. Fans may be happy to learn that the CEO of the game's developer has now confirmed a trading feature will be introduced through a future update.

"It's kind of a core element," Niantic Labs' John Hanke told Business Insider.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Pokemon Go's New Features Detailed

Unfortunately, Hanke did not share any specifics about how trading would work or when the update that adds it will arrive. He did, however, say trading is a logical extension of Pokemon Go's themes, as it encourages players to come together--in the real world or the virtual one.

Hanke also teased that other new features will include improvements to Poke Stops and Gyms, which the CEO said are now only their "very most basic versions." The new update will allow players to "customize their functions in other ways."

Another new feature coming is a global leaderboard system that ranks the world's best Pokemon Go players. Users can also look forward to improvements to the game's augmented reality system to make Pokemon look better when blended into the real world.

Finally, Hanke suggested that Niantic Labs might bring Pokemon Go to dedicated AR devices. "That may be a fun thing to take advantage of," he said.

One of the biggest AR devices coming out is Microsoft's HoloLens, though it still sounds like relatively early days for that device.

Pokemon Go launched this month for iOS and Android devices in the US. The game's international rollout has been "paused" as Niantic Labs addresses the server issues.

In other news about the game, a woman reportedly found a dead body while playing Pokemon Go, while police say armed robbers targeted people using the game.

Battles would be nice, REAL battles. Choosing abilities and actually fighting eachother. Why not?

I haven't been to a Poke-gym yet but from what I understand the battles are simple matters of tapping a bunch of times and swiping. That is lame. They need to implement some real battle mechanics with choosing attacks/resistances/buffs & debuffs and so on. While I like the idea of this game, it doesn't feel like a Pokemon game with half-assed tap to fight mechanics.

@TheeVindicator: This game isn't meant to be like the handheld variant. The battles are meant to be something quick and easy to pick up.

This game is a fucking alpha version it's buggy and featureless. Absolutely no quality control on this app. Shameful especially since they're reusing assets from ingress like come on an indie dev team couldve made this game in a month

"Pokemon Go's New Features Detailed"

"Unfortunately, Hanke did not share any specifics about how trading would work or when the update that adds it will arrive." - Oh.

"Users can also look forward to improvements to the game's augmented reality system to make Pokemon look better when blended into the real world." - Oh.

"Another new feature coming is a global leaderboard system that ranks the world's best Pokemon Go players. - Thanks for telling us all about it, Eddy!"

I check the GameFAQs poll each morning, and I'll let my eyes wander over the GameSpot News section to get a glimpse of what's going on in gaming lately. You'd think by now I should know better than to click one of the links thinking it was new, helpful, useful information.

I should've known it was just an Eddie Makuch "article."

@corranhorn: Eddie averages about 25 articles a day, that should tell you all you need to know.

@corranhorn: hey come on, it has plenty of useful info. like, there is probably going to be some kind of trading feature added someday, maybe.. and they might also add some other stuff.. someday, maybe.. :)

eventually we might get an article that clarifies that they might also someday, possibly add in other generations of pokemon too... someday, maybe.

i'm waiting on the edge of my seat for more articles, that suggests a confirmation of things that might possibly happen someday, maybe. :)
