Pokemon multiplying on Wii, DS

Nintendo announces Pokemon Black and White will join handheld library next spring, while PokePark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure hits European Wii consoles July 9.

Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver haven't even fallen out of the NPD Group's top 10 monthly sales chart yet, but Nintendo has already lined up their successors. The company today announced that Pokemon Black Version and Pokemon White Version will arrive on the Nintendo DS in North America and Europe in spring of 2011. Additionally, European Poke-maniacs unwilling to wait that long will be able to tide themselves over with PokePark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure starting July 9.

Catch all you want. They'll make more.
Catch all you want. They'll make more.

Beyond a new storyline and monsters to catch, details on what gamers can expect from Pokemon Black and White remain slim. However, Nintendo has previously said that the game will be a "groundbreaking evolution of all aspects," though it will presumably maintain its traditional adventuring and battle mechanics. As for the dual name, Nintendo traditionally releases near-identical editions of the same Pokemon game under slightly different monikers, encouraging players to exchange captured monsters between versions.

Details are much easier to come by on PokePark, which launched in Japan last December. The game revolves around Pikachu, who must save the PokePark after its Sky Prism is destroyed. The gameplay will be based around searching the park to pick up the Prism pieces with the help of key Pokemon. There will also be minigames at many of the attractions, including races, strength tests, and obstacle courses.

For more on Pikachu's Adventure, check out GameSpot's Import Friendly coverage of the Japanese edition of the game, starting at the 7:48 mark of the video below.

Lucario I will agree on a good majority of what you said. BUT to make your point better, you may wanna check your spelling. "Spitting image" doesn't make any sense, the phrase you are looking for is "Spinning image"

for some reason i fell like they just couldn't come up with new ideas and stated ripping off digimon. some of the new Pokemon a a spitting image of a few digimon, albeit recolored / slightly altered; which is sad because it used to be the other way around.

I believe that the Pokemon from Black and White may not be too bad. I mean, we've seen how much publicity it's been getting. I think that it's only a matter of time until Nintendo releases their more powerful Pokemon. I must say though that the currently released Pokemon aren't too good but I still have a hunch that it may get better.

@Thunderstarter I'm not ignorant to the fact that pokemon is owned by Nintendo, I have been playing them on their systems well aware of their rights since the 90s. But as many exclusives, many more recently have been going cross platform it was only hopes I had. You may remember how exciting Pokemon Stadium was when it first came out getting to see your pokemon in 3D, well similar thing is what I was getting at. A pokemon RPG just like the handhelds do it but just 3D HD environments would be pretty cool. I know it is a very unrealistic hope, it is like wishing for Zelda on PS3.

@Fife1100 the reason the hgss look exactly like dp is that they use the same engine just like rs and frlg, grand theft auto does the same thing like gt3 and vice city and san andreas and then came gt4. Black and White will be the 5th engine and will include pokemon more vividly fighting (not just a sprite doing a circle in the example of using quick attack), improved graphics with a more 3d feel and the protagonist (the ash character) will be older, im guessing because they might be aware of the fact that the original pokemon crowd was around 6-12 in 96 when they came out so those fans are currently 20-26 and nintendo might have figured out the 8 year old moniker might need a change

I still can't make up my mind on what version should I get! Zerkrom is just so badass! But I like the black version legendary too. I hope he is a Dragon/Ice type because if he's not but a boring dual type then I'll just get white version. Zerkrom for the win!!! We will see come Monday on what types they are!

I like to describe Pokemon as a "subtle RPG", and i'm saying that in a good way. Many people complain how battling hasn't changed since Red and Blue and claim that they only add new moves, regions and of course, the monsters themselves but I feel it is a lot more complex than that. The battling has remained simple because of its target audience, but theres enough complexity for older gamers to enjoy it. Breeding, Natures, Effort points... and so many other things, plus it feels incredibly rewarding when you beat your friends after training your team for so long. Obviously this is my opinion, i'm not forcing anyone to like the franchise, I just feel it deserves to grow further and further and open up many new possibilities for the future.

Still not mentioning that HGSS are remakes and BW are sequels. It'd make Nintendo seem less condescending, but hell, it's one-twentieth of a step of progress among the company, so anyone would be indifferent to the fact. However, I'm still buying HG and Black. Actually, I'm still grinding on the turn-based aspect; a relatively small gripe in contrast to my need for DS and Wii games... ^_^

well for pokemon it's simple. You either like it or you don't. That's why they make new pokemon games ever few years. Some people never get bored, and some people cry foul.

I got a ROM of Pokemon Red and I need to say as a die-hard Fan of the Genre since I was 8 or 9..... don't worry I don't play it that much anymore but, I have to say that Pokemon Red felt 100x more "Better" than Pokemon Fire Red could do, I was very pleased with Soul Silver that truly did feel like a re-make although the Graphics were EXACTLY the same as Diamond and Pearl they better spice things up. Nintendo could make another Pokemon XD or Colosseum because those games were fun even if it was still turn based.

I almost said, "Well at least they aren't a rehash of the older games." Then I thought about it. They haven't even changed the sounds these f****** creatures make since the beginning. EDIT: and by new animals, I mean a completely new roster. Not things we've seen for the last 15 years. Black and White better deliver new animals and new play mechanics. Not that it would matter though.

That Pokemon pictured in this article just looks like a splice of others from older generations. Are they seriously THAT stuck for ideas? Much preferred it when this was the type of thing kept to Digimon, & Pokemon was limited to creatures that could actually be related to something, with each one having very defining features.

The only problem I have with the new pokemon games are that they do not have very creative pokemon now. I mean have you seen the new starter pokemon???? Just stupid compared to Gen 1 and 2. The only semi-cool looking pokemon is the cover art one from Black

Zenverak - Point duly noted but you are wrong. There are some major differences between the CoDs, especially the last three. If you want to talk about no new updates let's examine Madden, Fifa, and all the other sports games released on a yearly basis.

I see some people like, NO NEW UPDATES. Well there are new pokemon and attacks to customize a nearly endless possibilities in your team. What about all of the call of duties huh? People don't seem to have as many problems with those, yet I don't really see ANY changes.

People still buy into Pokemon, especially since there will forever be an influx of children to market to, not to mention the die-hard Pokefan. They're still raking in oogoo bucks, why should they stop?

Like reztoc said this is turning to be a yearly update like madden and fifa. I really haven't seen any new improvements. No new epic story, no innovative gameplay additions. imo they are just milking the series to the max and I don't think the milk will ever run out.

Does this remind you of a series that gets a yearly update with little change to the content and getting more stale every installment? Madden, anyone?

I don't expect Pokemon to go real-time like the Tales Series, but they could at least do something else to spice up the gameplay. Also, I would be very delighted if they surprised us with a good story.

I remember playing hours upon hours of blue, silver and then diamond. The game has never really changed though. It needs to take a new direction if these games are going to survive any longer. Hopefully all these new aspects will be what these games need.

I can't believe it's taken them this long to do black and white versions. What ever next though!? Purple version? Plaid Version? Peach Version perhaps? Maybe Grey version? How about Brown version? Scarlet Version? Seriously Nintendo, you are running out of interesting colours! Better think of a run-off for the series and fast. Mind you, Scarlet Version would be cool enough I guess.

I've been a fan of the games since the start... Yet even I know the games are getting stale and need a overhaul. When I heard they will revamping the series, I was extremely happy to hear that. There were rumors of them even dumping the pokemon they had and starting fresh. I was even happy about that. Why? Because rather then fighting off swarms of zubat and tentacool in EVERY handheld game, you can finally have some new wild pokemon to face and catch. Plus they may finally balance out the battle system. Then I heard they will once again bring back the old pokemon to fill our parties up from the start, so I'm guessing this won't be the overhaul I am hoping for. Heck, even the starters are the same old grass/ water/ fire combo. Why not have something like dark/ psychic/ fighting or ice/ fighting/ flying? It would still be a weaknesses circle, but give a new experience from the start. In other words, they always make you use the same Pokemon in the same ways one way or another. I want something new to use for once. If they MUST use the old Pokemon again, I hope they only allow you to access them once the game is beat once. That way the first playthrough will be all new with like 160 new (balanced) Pokemon, then the post-game will be collecting oldies. I guess I'll have to see when it comes out if they are going to be overhauled enough for me to make a purchase on them. After all, if i wanted to play the same game again, I would just play the oldies.

Okay first i would like to state that I played Pokemon Red on day 1, so I'm no noob to Pokemon, played through Crystal good game, skipped S&R, bought Fire red out of nostalgia, and now my younger brother has Pearl and Heartgold, but they are still the same thing from 13 years ago, now I'm gonna put this on the table, hope I don't get death threats, amek a pokemon with a battle system like tales of symphonia, that would rule, make a compete revolution of the game, etc., don't want something sooo drastic, make time based attacks like paper mario, and add combos, ala Chrono Trigger, but just do something new, not just add 100 new critters that mysteriously look very similar to old ones

The Pokemon franchise needs to come to 3D on a console. There is so much potential for Pokemon to become a fully-fledged RPG with more complex gameplay. Plus it could do with some shiny graphics.

I'm not entirely sure how to respond to this, honestly. On the one hand, I'm sure gameplay will be solid and that the games will last a while. But on the other hand, I'm expecting that it will be another version of what is essentially the same game. You know what I'm talking about...the game where you fight eight gym leaders, an enemy team, a rival, and the elite four, all while capturing various critters who often simply replace a similar creature from the last generation. I really hope Nintendo shakes things up with this entry. I mean, I like Pokemon, but this is getting to be too redundant for me, personally anyway. Oh, and would it kill them to release one version for a change? The trading gimmick was cute at first, but there's no real for multiple versions of the same game with such minor changes. I'll be watching these two cautiously.
