Pokemon Snap Coming to Wii U Virtual Console This Week in Europe

No word on a release for North America.

Pokemon Snap, the acclaimed Pokemon spinoff originally released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, is coming to the Wii U virtual console in Europe, Nintendo has announced.

It will launch this coming Thursday, August 18, Nintendo of Europe said on Twitter. Pricing was not announced.

There was no mention of a release in North America. Pokemon Snap launched for the Wii U virtual console in April in Japan. A release for North America seems likely, but this has not been confirmed.

Pokemon Snap sends players on a virtual trip to Pokemon Island where they go on a safari to take pictures of Pokemon in their natural habitat. Things like weather effects, environmental considerations, and the shyness of some Pokemon makes snapping pictures trickier than you'd imagine.

After snapping shots of Pokemon in the wild, players send them to Professor Oak, who judges the photos on the basis of size, pose, technique, and the number of creatures captured.

The new Wii U version of the single-player game supports GamePad, Classic Controller Pro, or the Wii U Pro Controller. Pokemon Snap is already available for the original Wii's virtual console, priced at $10.

How stupid is Nintendo for not making a sequel to this game on the Wii or Wii U? You could aim the wiimotes at the TV or use the gamepad screen as your camera lens. An ACTUAL use for the crappy things.

But no, better ruin Star Fox instead?

Wow so only in europe and no word on a North American release. Nintendo is being stubborn till the fans are just moving on to something better. Theres only so much abuse you can take until ur just fed up. Dont understand who is calling the shots for games overthere but they need to step it up and release their games in all regions. Nobody wants to hear about them getting games first when theres literally not enough content coming to the wiiu.

Pokemon Snap is good and all but, I want a true Pokemon Snap 2, not the first one.

@davillain-: I can't agree with you more! The Wii U gamepad seems like it was made for a game like Pokémon Snap, the built-in motion tracking alone would justify a Wii U sequel.

Is it so wrong that I want a mainline pokemon game to land on the eshop? I'd be happy with plain old Sapphire or Ruby. Heck even simple Red/Blue would put me over the moon. It wouldn't be the end of the world Nintendo.

imagin if they made a second game, all 700+ pokemon with loads of maps and hidden tricks you would need to do to get some pokemon out of hiding. i loved the orginal snap, i loved trying to finding out how to do things (like hitting a magikarp across a map to evolve it) without having to go online.

So good... I really enjoyed this game! I remember spending a whole day in summer with the curtains closed, blocking out the glare on my screen, photographing every pokemon in the game.
