It has come to our attention that some Pokken Tournament players have decided they want to play characters other than Gengar. Apparently, these Trainers yearn to Synergise with Mewtwo and Shadow Mewtwo, which aren't available on the character select screen from the outset.

For these people, we have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that both Mewtwo and Shadow Mewtwo are easy to unlock. The bad news, however, is that you are mad and wasting your time because Gengar is the best and using any other Pokemon is pointless.
Since it isn't immediately obvious how to unlock Mewtwo and Shadow Mewtwo, we thought we'd give you the heads-up and save you some fiddling around with menus. While it's relatively easy to unlock both characters, it does take a bit of time.
Both Mewtwo and Shadow Mewtwo are unlocked by playing through the Ferrum League, which is Pokken Tournament's version of an arcade mode. Players must fight their way through multiple leagues (Green, Blue, Red, Chroma, Iron) using their chosen Pokemon and emerge as the champion.
At the very start of your career, you'll encounter a mysterious cloaked trainer and a Mewtwo that seems to have lost its mind. This storyline is threaded throughout the league and both these characters will reappear numerous times as you move up the ladder.
By defeating all your opponents in the pools and tournaments, as well as completing the champion battle for the Green, Blue, and Red leagues you'll unlock Mewtwo.
Shadow Mewtwo, however, is a little trickier. Once you've completed Red League you'll unlock the Chroma League, where you'll have to keep fighting in the pools until you get into the top eight. This takes much longer than previous leagues as you usually start off at rank 90; additionally the AI puts up more of a fight.
Once this is done, you've got to best your fellow top eight contenders in the tournament, then defeat Glenn and his Machamp in the champion battle. Whoop his ass and you'll unlock Shadow Mewtwo, along with his three special events to replay.
Alternatively, if you purchased the first run of Pokken Tournament on disc, you should have got a Shadow Mewtwo Amiibo card with it. Shadow Mewtwo can become playable by touching this on the Wii U GamePad's NFC reader. The downside of doing this, however, is that he isn't permanently unlocked, so you'll have to use the card again every time you fire up the game.

Like we said, it's a simple but time-consuming procedure. However once you've done all that you’ll have two of the most powerful (and cheap) characters in the game.
Sure, they might look unbelievably cool and have some insane damage output, but are they a purple ghost? No. Do they stick their tongues out and mock their opponents? No. Do they laugh maniacally as they suck you into an alternate dimension and crush you? No. #TeamGengar
