Potential PlayStation Network, LulzSec hacker arrested in UK - Report

19-year-old man arrested in raid being questioned over PSN breach, suspected of being part of hacker ring; group denies any connection.

British police have apprehended a man they suspect of being part of LulzSec, according to Develop. The British magazine quotes a Scotland Yard spokesperson as saying that the investigative police force has connected a 19-year-old Essex resident it arrested earlier today with the hacker group, which has been blamed for a recent wave of cyberattacks. Companies victimized by the attacks include Elder Scrolls and Fallout publisher Bethesda Softworks and Eve Online publisher CCP Games.

The Briton arrested today is suspected of being part of LulzSec.
The Briton arrested today is suspected of being part of LulzSec.

On its official website, London's Metropolitan Police have only officially announced that following "a pre-planned intelligence-led operation" assisted by the US's Federal Bureau of Investigation, a man was taken into custody and is being held for questioning. (The man's residence in the UK's Essex region was also searched, leading to the "examination of a significant amount of material.") However, Develop reports that the suspect was charged with a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) website, which LulzSec claimed responsibility for.

Further, the Scotland Yard spokesperson told the magazine that the "We will examine the individual for any Sony data" in reference to April's PlayStation Network data breach. The data theft, which saw over 77 million PSN users' data compromised, led to a nearly month-long outage of the PlayStation 3 and PSP's online service and caused the PlayStation Store to be out of commission for nearly six weeks.

For its part, LulzSec used its Twitter feed--where it claimed responsibility for the Bethesda attack--to deny any connection to the arrested individual. This morning, the hacker collective posted the following message: "Seems the glorious leader of LulzSec got arrested, it's all over now… wait… we're all still here! Which poor bastard did they take down?"

Today's arrest comes just over a week after three suspects were arrested in Spain on suspicion of being involved with the PSN data breach. Spanish authorities accused those individuals of being part of Anonymous, the decentralized hacker collective blamed by Sony for the attacks on its service. However, Anonymous spokespersons have denied any official sanctioning of the PSN breach.

So a suspect is under arrest. That's good to hear. Forget examining this douchebag, why not try a little "enhanced interrogation" and see what happens.

@Dpl420: lol ya i know it, you know it... but there are a few that don't like to hear it. That's why the "two of them" flagged my post (you know who you are). I guess GS mods are sympathetic to cyber-terrorists, because I broke no TOS rules ;)

Good. These guys are not heroes. If they were fighting for all of us, they wouldn't release people's private info, credit card info, and passwords. What cause that helps people would do this to them?

@parrot_of_adun: Bingo.... of course, if that's still the measure, now you're "winning". *sigh* This is why I tend to stick to blogs, and not comments... oh well! @AceCometh: If he's a member, how much do you want to bet they offer him a plea deal in return for testimony and information?

If he is found to be a member and bet they lay it on thick and heavy to send a message to the hacker community.

@COPMAN221 Hmm... The internet is a fickle thing. Anyway, I would hope you know the value of popular opinion (or more accurately, the lack thereof).

I dont understand why everyone hates hackers at the minute. I personally dont care if my PSN was down for a while, I dont use PSN anyway, think of something else to do or play single player, how games should be played. I support hackers when they p off big companies/government, its funny and im glad there are people that can stick it to the man once in a while.

@Philly1UPer: Take a look on wiki or whatever else for "proxy", and "BNC or Bouncer". You'll get an idea why they're not leaving their IP records at any given site. Now imagine using a bunch of those in layers; you need to have an intact link back to the original... doable, but it takes time and not something a private company can do without legal aid.

@AncientDozer I personally think we should go Iraqi on them. They commit most of their crimes with their hands so, lets put their hands on some cinderblocks and crack them open with Baseball Bats.

Also, can they release a picture of this guy? I can almost garantee that he is over weight, has a terrible hairline and patches of pubic hair growing around his chin/jawline. Its only fitting to release a picture of this guy and his name, since him and his buddies like doing that to other people.

I still dont see how they can't trace these guys down or ask Twitter for their records. They are pretty much mocking and spitting in the face of law and justice through Twitter....releasing personal information of Cops and putting not only their lives at further risk, but the lives of their families as well? They are nothing more then a pack of cowards who act like a bunch of 6'5 Olypmic Power Lifters and street fighting gods from behind their computers. I really hope they find them and put them in jail so they cna rename their group "lulzwegetbuttraped"

@Maddv1lla1n I guarantee you they will not. The computer programming field is so glutted that the government refuses to look at anyone with a felony on their record. Not to mention the fact that most agencies are on a hiring freeze.

@AncientDozer: Hackers who establish secure networks, write code to facilitate them, and crack DRM are essential to piracy. Without demand, those particular skills would be literally worthless... how much more symbiotic do you want it? Beyond that, I think you need to note the difference between a hugely connected mob boss who had(has?) the FBI around his little finger, and a terrorist who probably had the support of a nuclear power... and some teenage/twenty-something twits. You seem to lack a sense for shades of grey, jokes, etc... I'm done.

@AncientDozer: This is the comments section of GS... what taste? As for the rest... hacking and gaming piracy have long been hand in hand, and gaming piracy has been a staple of gaming. Like it or not, that relationship exists, so it seems odd to target gamers, especially as a fairly significant number of hackers are probably gamers. As for the rest, hackers are as varied as any other group of people, which is why you have the hat system as a general means of classification. This group is young, black hat, with a hint of skiddie so while gross generalizations are being made, I feel comfortable with them. I'd add, that anonymity is illusory, temporary, and simply a matter of time and resources to breach. You can run through a dozen proxies and BNC's, and that makes it tough to find you, so mostly it doesn't happen. Take out PSN, and you just provided the requisite motivation for a hunt, and then it's just a matter of time. The only perfect protection is living in a country that has no desire or means to extradite (the Dalnet event, with Turkish DDOS'ers comes to mind), and the UK is anything, but that.

@Frame_Dragger YES that was my biggest problems with hackers. Them taking it out on the gaming community first was burning me up. CoD4 on PS3 is terrible because of hackers. I can't even unlock a red dot sight for my guns or anything. All I have is all camos unlocked...smh. But yeah, the REAL hacking community noticed gaming companies attacking hackers, thus started this all out hackers-vs-the world thing. smh this is just one big s***storm now lmao.

@FLYEboi50: Some of them definitely are skilled, and it may be that the core of really talented and intelligent hackers in the group are not caught. Thing is, people like that tend to grow up and grow out of this kind of random destructive phase. The little pukes around them will be nailed however, the people setting up botnets and the like. Still, the best hackers out there tend to be most interested in getting information, not smearing websites or getting personal info... usually they push a bit too far and get caught, or retire/change hobbies. Still, I know what you mean, and in the heart of this hackstorm it's tough to see any light at the end of the tunnel. I still can't believe these bastards turned on gamers!!!

@Frame_Dragger Ha! Yeah. But decades of the world being hacked...that's going to be mayhem. These guys are big time hackers. They've taken down CIA website, Brazilian gov website, etc. There's a list of their attacks on knowyourmeme, but yeah, hopefully they get caught sooner. I most recently had to face a trojan on my computer, and quite frankly, HACKING is getting on my last nerve....they must be stopped soon. The sad thing is, there's no real purpose behind their attacks. They're all just for kicks.

@FLYEboi50: Well, right now they are ahead, but they're playing a losing game in the end. A lone hacker who keeps a low profile can be pretty devestating, but anytime you have a group enterprise, you have terrible weakeness built into the system. These guys are not subtle, they want attention, and in any criminal model that tends to lead to failure. It may be why the more flamboyent bank robber is almost always caught, but the more subtle Bernie Madoff type takes decades to catch, if ever. @COPMAN221: I bet getting rear-ended by some massive cockney bugger named "Spud", wasn't how these guys figured on losing their virginity. :D

@cooljosh3k, Thanks. Don't you find it funny that since this idiot was taken down and Lulzsec claimed that he was not part of their group there hasn't been any new news of anyone being hacked by them.. Hmmm The must be hiding under their parents bed and hoping the feds don't kick their door down next.. @Lulzsec, They are coming, and they are bringing hell with them so pack up the EZ glide and get ready for some jail time..

@Frame_Dragger Yeah, I hope that gives the proper authorities a big enough lead. It seems to not phase whoever is tweeting on the LulzSec twitter feed though. It's as if they're always one step ahead somehow. But it seems that in time they'll be caught. But how much time, idk.

@FLYEboi50: That means he, as host, has full access to records of (generally false) IPs. That said, it also means that if there is a bit of logged chat or a single time that one person made a mistake, he'll have that info. Tweet away... you don't want your network host to get nabbed by the cops. Is this going to lead to immidiate action?... doubtful. Is it part of the steady process of breaking them down, a first step? Yep.
