Power Rangers Fighting Game Trailer Sees Mighty Morphin' Green Dominate

Two versions of Tommy have been confirmed already.

A new Power Rangers fighting game, titled Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, has been announced. Despite featuring characters from the mobile game, Power Rangers: Legacy Wars, Battle for the Grid is a brand-new title that's been designed with consoles in mind.

According to a tweet from the official Battle for the Grid Twitter account, the game will "feature a completely brand new battle mechanic" in comparison to Legacy Wars, as well as "different movesets" for each fighter. Hasbro creative director Jason Bischoff tweeted that Battle for the Grid would include both a story mode and online PvP, DLC content, and both cross-play and cross-progression across systems. He added that, unlike Legacy Wars, Battle for the Grid would not be free-to-play.

Now Playing: Power Rangers Battle For The Grid Gameplay Live

An announcement trailer for Battle for the Grid teases what combat in the new game looks like. On Battle for the Grid's official website, combat is described as being "easy to learn but hard to master" with the challenge coming from knowing "when to strike, not how."

Battle for the Grid features heroes and villains from throughout the Power Ranger franchise's years of TV shows, movies, and comics. The announcement trailer sees Mighty Morphin' Green Ranger v2, who's still the best version of Tommy Oliver, taking on both Mighty Morphin' Red Ranger and Super Megaforce Yellow Ranger. Battle for the Grid's website also confirms Lord Drakkon--an alternate universe version of Mighty Morphin' Tommy Oliver who went on to become an evil Green/White Ranger hybrid that desires to destroy every Ranger across the multiverse--will be in the game as well. According to the game's website, there are 11 more characters scheduled for the game, but their identities have not been revealed.

Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid is scheduled to release for Xbox One, PS4, Switch, and PC in April 2019. If you pre-order the game, you'll receive the Mighty Morphin' Green Ranger v2 character skin.

@MajinSquall: It's not going against MK11, it goes against BlazBlue, FighterZ and Jump Force. AKA the other budget fighting games.

@greatatemi: those will all be out before Power Rangers, both it and MK11 are out in the same month so it's going up against that

also BlazBlue and FighterZ was released last year and Jump Force is a full price not a budget title

I love Power Rangers and all, but is a fighting game really a good idea? They're all basically the exact same character with the same costume, identical fighting style, and slightly different weapons that they rarely use. Is there really enough differentiation to make each character fight in a unique manner?

They would work better as a single fighter in another game where the different costume options gets you a different colored Ranger.

I'm intrigued, but the brief snippets of gameplay looked a little clunky. So I'm cautious as well...

Man this is pretty damn cool and with the ability for both Cross play and Cross progression this almost guarantees I'll be getting this game on both the Xbox One X and the Switch. Why can't MK11 do the same thing this game is doing?

Man, I wish the Tommy worship would die off. He was an interesting character for a few episodes when he debuted 25 years ago, before becoming just as homogeneous as the rest. Since then, he has consistently been the worst part of every Power Rangers based thing he's been a part of. Most of the cheesy terribleness that people associate with Power Rangers is personified in Tommy Olliver.

@danielsonsxe: Dunno what you're on about. Dino Thunder is legit one of the best Disney era series.

@OtakuD50: Having just finished Dino Thunder fairly recently, I disagree. It was good, but I liked S.P.D better. That said, Dino Thunder was still pretty good. When it wasn't focusing on Tommy. The acting was pretty damn good all around... except JDF who's acting was very heavily reminiscent of MMPR season one. The acting for Power Rangers as a series has gotten (mostly) better. He hasn't. His over-the-top, exaggerated "karate yells" are another problem. Everyone else grunts and groans like normal human beings.

Obviously, this is just my opinion, that should go without saying. I just see stuff like five different Tommy Ollivers in Legacy Wars (the game this game seems to be based off of?) while so many other Rangers are missing (seriously, where's Adam?) and feel like people greatly exaggerate the awesomeness of Tommy. He was cool for a week or two. Then he was just another Ranger.

@danielsonsxe:

That's like only your opinion to me and a lot of others Tommy is the best Power Ranger and the more Power Ranger stuff he is in the better.

I'm shocked this franchise still has enough legitimacy to get a game. I don't see any mention of it anymore, anywhere. No toys in stores and no shows on TV. Where is it still popular?

@Barighm: "Where is it still popular?" Japan probably (they also have the better action figures too).

As much of a Sentai and Power Ranger fan that I am, I think they're banking on nostalgia more than anything for this.
As for the show, it's been on Nick in the US since 2012(I think).
