Prey (2017) Review Roundup

Check out what the critics are saying about Arkane's new game.

It's been a week since Prey was released. Being a long game that wasn't shared with critics long before launch day, it's taken some time to complete, but a variety of Prey reviews now made their way online.

We've collected a handful of these for you to get a sense of Prey's critical reception. The response has been all over the place, with technical issues having a severe effect for some while others have enjoyed its atmosphere and the experimentation it allows for.

You can check out the reviews below and head over to GameSpot sister site Metacritic for a broader look at Prey's reception.

  • Game: Prey
  • Developer: Arkane Studios
  • Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC
  • Release: May 5
  • Price: $60

GameSpot -- 6/10

"Prey is a game of uneven pacing and uninteresting characters. It opens with a poignant, thought-provoking premise, but fails to follow through until the end, when it claims a revelation it doesn't quite earn. Its gameplay falters out of the gate, eventually maturing into something worthwhile, if a bit familiar. As an homage to System Shock it's competent and at times even enjoyable. However, Prey fails to distinguish itself, and next to immersive sim contemporaries such as Dishonored, it feels stagnant." -- Tamoor Hussain [Full review]

PC Gamer -- 79/100

"Many of Prey's issues are a consequence of its broad range of options. Attempting to cater to a variety of play styles is laudable, but also means that Prey isn't as good a stealth game as Dishonored, nor as good a combat game as BioShock. But while the individual parts have problems, Prey is nonetheless greater than the sum of them. Prey is worth playing, mostly thanks to the strength of Talos-I as a setting, and the excellent environment design." -- Phil Savage [Full review]

GamesRadar -- 4.5/5

"Talos-I isn't just a location. The space station is a story in itself, with every inch of it marked by the people who used to live and work there. Walking through its corridors and gradually ridding them of the Typhon brings it closer to what it used to be. Weirdly, you wouldn't belong if everything went back to normal. Because over the course of the game it becomes increasingly impossible to stop thinking with your GLOO Gun and Typhon powers. Prey is a playground for creativity where you control the variables. It's time to start experimenting." -- Zoe Delahunty-Light [Full review]

Rock, Paper, Shotgun -- no score

"Prey is a game that's smart about almost every aspect of itself, and yet with that, so crucially modest. It doesn't yank the camera from you, doesn't force you to sit through cutscenes, doesn't demand you sit still and listen to its backstory. It's content to be itself and let you find it, which is a damned rare treat in this hobby. Even more amazingly, for all its array of abilities and powers, you can finish the game without touching them, perhaps even find a narrative rationale for doing so. It lets you improvise, explore, make big decisions without needing to tell you they're big. And yes, it absolutely does let you turn into a cup." -- John Walker [Full review]

Time -- 3.5/5

"If you're in the mood for a corridor crawl modeled after the Dishonored series' 'one problem, multiple solutions' approach, Prey has plenty to offer. Its pedigree is clear, an homage to design DNA you can trace back to Looking Glass Studios 1990s Thief and Shock games. There's no shame in iteration, and Prey does nothing worse than its precursors. The only question, given how familiar most of its ideas feel in 2017, is whether homage is enough." -- Matt Peckham [Full review]

IGN -- 8.0/10

"Prey's curious alternate-history universe, intriguing side-quests, hidden threats, and detailed environmental storytelling make Talos-I a joy to explore. The unsettling sense of paranoia that comes from knowing any object could turn out to be a hidden enemy gives even the quiet moments a palpable tension. All of that picks up the slack for combat and stealth that doesn't feel fresh enough to sustain it throughout what can be a long game." -- Dan Stapleton [Full review - updated 5/12]

Polygon -- 8.5 (PC) / 8.0 (PS4/Xbox One)

"Arkane has the confidence to let Prey end on its own terms, even if it occasionally leans too heavily on its least interesting aspects. When it looks most like a shooter, Prey is merely competent. But as a mystery, a deep-space haunted house with dozens of stories of tragedy and humanity to tell, Prey is a remarkably successful archaeological expedition--and it manages to compellingly ruminate on what it means to be." -- Arthur Gies [Full review]

This game ain't worth anybody's time. It's a product of the early 360 era.

Damn, I never known GS to be so critical over a game title, especially one of Prey's caliber

Personally I love this game. To say this game sucks is also like saying SS, SS2, & original Deus Ex were lousy games. Prey has the feel of those original classics, IMO.

@Cikatriz_ESP: Then you need to explain why this game is not as good as those original ones that started this type of games that inspired Bioshock series, Dead Space series, next gen Deus Ex sequels. Those inspired games are tailor made for newer generation gamers. Prey is made in the style and philosophy of the old classics.

The dude on IGN initially gave it a "4" citing a game breaking bug......i guess someone got to him because he reevaluated the score and now its an "8".

Thats quite a jump.

The decision to change the score is fine but leaves me wondering about what went on behind the scenes.

@Alecmrhand: I believe he said the score was subject to change. Not entirely 100% certain but he hadn't completed the game and gave a partial review. Idk though. I'm guessing after the bug his final thoughts was that it was a worthwhile game.

@Alecmrhand: EXACTLY my thoughts... Given how publishers consider a certain metacritic score to be a death knell (as their shareholders now know all too well), this smells a LOT like money/favors/acess being traded.

It used to be that whatever code rev you launched with was what you got scored with, and the Day1 patch was indeed fairly factored into that 4.0. So now that's apparently negotiable...

@Alecmrhand: yeah I just saw that. Whilst everyone if free to change thier mind, I felt this massive number jump removed all credibility from what the reviewer was on about. The demo was fine I thought, just felt pretty average. Maybe just not my thing.

This game sucks. Definitely a 5 or 6, tops. Sluggish controls, the GLOO gun is terrible and the story isn't interesting. The game is just plain boring.

Very mixed, I played the demo and the concept was clever but thought it would get tedious if this was the theme throughout the whole game.

Sadly it just seems like an ok game within one of the best years for gaming, in well over a decade. Otherwise it would have been seen in a more positive light if it came much earlier.

@Pyrosa: Wasn't a fan of Horizon but acknowledge it as a good game, would personally replace it with Resi7. Different strokes for different folks :)

I liked 2014/15 but compared to 17 it's tough for me to compare the overall quality, this year has been excellent for so many types of games.

For some the game was great and for some the game was not, if a player think the game deserved a 9 why try to convince him that it is not. Some games that are good are chastised because of an personal vendetta for various reasons. The game is based off an individual likes and dislikes as other players. So I do not base my purchases off of a review I do for play through which gives me some insight on how well a game performs versus a reviewer that just writes.

Thats the problem with Prey. Balance.
At first, I started playing this game on my PS4 Pro. Hated every moment. I am glad I gave it a second chance and bought it for my PC. Best game I have played for the past few months.
When I watched GameSpot's review, the reviewer clearly played with the gamepad.
I am not a Mouse and Keyboard guy. I play 99% of my games, on PC, with a controller. But sadly, this game is not balanced at all playing it with a controller.

It seems that a few people took it personally when review copies weren't provided. Dan Stapleton in particular was transparent in the past about his distaste for the practice. This game is easily a 7.5 and I'd say a 9 if you're a fan of the genre. If you enjoyed Dead Space, Bioshock, or Dishonored you should thoroughly enjoy Prey.

Sounds mediocre, with some advertiser spend-based score bumps from certain places. PC version appears to be a shit show, as predicted when they refused to release a demo on PC. Don't reward such duplicity. Wait for months, then if you really want to play it get it at a deep discount.

@Thanatos2k: What are you on about. Prey is vastly superior on pc over consoles. And not only the usual higher frames an better graphics like in the majority of games but also in loadtimes, stable performance, less crashes and tight controls. 70 sec loadtime on console vs 13-15 on pc in a game where you will load new areas often. And no input lag. It's a game built on the cryengine, an engine that has always run like crap on console and superb on pc.

Read some reviews and look at DF tech analysis. Some reviewers that have tried all versions even score the pc version higher and recomend that version. Even low end hardware like a 1050 can play it at solid 60 at 1080p unlike the consoles.

The only issue pc had was the save bug wich applied to all platforms not only pc wich is supposedly fixed now, but if not it can be solved by deleting the "area".level file of the area that causes the crash unlike on console where you are fucked if you get the bug.

The game just isnt that good. Put aside the bugs and glitches, the environment is fantastic, but the gameplay is dull and boring. The way the game saves and loads is a pain in the ass to sometimes. Ive seen some weird shit happen with reloads after dieing. Maybe Im just not a fan of Arkanes games, Dishonered always felt generic to me also.

That IGN score… just ouch.

That’s going to be a hard one to shake, especially when you consider that IGN is among one of the most widely looked at gaming sites out there. I understand that its score was due mainly to a technical issue but still many people out there will just look at the number given and think it is a proper representation of the game as a whole.

As for myself, I’m still just as “on the fence” about Prey as I was before the reviews even came out. The demo I played, while interesting and having potential, had some issues; most notably in overall presentation (issues that were brought up in many reviews.).

In any event, I think it might be best to hold off on it for right now considering the slew of other AAA games that have already been released in the past few months. That’s not to say Bethesda’s latest isn’t a good game but rather is a testament to the quality of games out there right now.

@Onipaladin: Thats probably why they stopped giving out review copies even if its a great game someone will hate on it potentially influencing day 1 sales. But look they released a good game and the early adopters realised this so when review sites started giving it bad scores there was a back lash from players look at the dislikes on the IGN vid. It works in Bethesda's favour tbh.

@nickyparmar92: I don't get why Dan gave it a score at all. He didn't finish the game. What does that 4/10 even mean if it only applies to the first half of the game? It's not an issue of the number being too low or too high, it's an issue of it being put next to all the other numbers like its a full and complete judgement of this game. His review isn't done, even if he has to move on and play other stuff, so it shouldn't be scored.

Dan Stapleton has been reviewing games for a long damn time now; I kinda expected better from him. : \
