Prey Dev Explains What the New Game Is and How It Plays

It's not just a shooter, nor is it a horror game.

Among Bethesda's E3 reveals this year was Prey, a brand-new game from Dishonored developer Arkane Studios. There was some confusion over what it is exactly, given that it uses the same name as an existing Bethesda series, but director Raphael Colantonio has now tried to better explain what to expect.

Echoing what he said at E3, Colantonio said in a newly released video, "Prey is not a sequel. It's not a remake. It has no tie with the original. You have to look at it like a reimagining of the idea."

Now Playing: Prey - What is Prey?

Also, despite what you might have gleaned from the trailer shown at E3, Colantonio said, "It's not horror. The psychological-thriller dimension is more around the theme of identity. Who are you exactly as Morgan?"

He also clarified that Prey is "not just shooting. It's more like a hybrid game where there's narrative mixed with action mixed with a little bit of [an] RPG layer."

There is combat, though, where you'll fight using powers learned from aliens in addition to weapons. These come in more traditional forms, like shotguns, as well as "some gadgets," which Colantonio said are present because the game takes place on a space station where scientists are working. "There's a lot of interesting gadgets that you can use that are not meant for combat but somehow work out."

Throughout the video, he tries to express that this is an Arkane game. He doesn't specifically call out Dishonored by name, but does say, "If you like Arkane games, those games that blend narratives and simulation and some choices and a lot of player exploration, Prey is going to be that game for you."

You can see everything Colantonio had to say in the video above.

Prey 2 was in development at one point, only for it to be canceled. Bethesda confirmed the cancellation in 2014. A rumor surfaced earlier this year suggesting that a "completely reworked" version would be announced at E3.

The first Prey was released back in 2006 for PC and Xbox 360 by Human Head Studios, which has gone on to develop games like Dungeon Defenders II.

The new Prey is due out for PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2017.

Im not going to lie, I loved the direction and story of the first game. I really wished they wouldve made a sequel based off that game. Im also disliking the idea of this new game not being a horror sci fi type game.I just dont understand why change something thats not broken. Its like the devs dont even care what the fans think. They couldve put out surveys before making that big decision.

While I don't necessarily feel the same way about it, my brother loved the first Prey, and I know he'd be disappointed if this Prey isn't connected; if it only has the same name. If it's not connected, which it isn't, they really should just use a different name. People that wanted the cyber punk Prey 2, wanted the cyber punk Prey (and that had connections to the first), so to give this game the title it is without the connection, it's just doing it to get people excited. Makes sense when it comes to business, but is unfortunate. I thought this game looked pretty cool though, and I'm interested to see more.

this explanation sounds a bit like Quantum Break, which is not a good thing.

the original's story and gameplay was great. hopefully this game will live up in some, if not all ways. though the fact that there is no native American protagonist already loses it a few points for me. i will hope that once starting this game all the preconceptions and issues about them ruining a great IP will fade away.

@elessarGObonzo: First off Quantum break was a great game and I would love to see a prey/tv show game if it was connected to the first game. They totally turned me off of this whole reimagining game they cooked up in their brains. Im definitely not supporting this new prey because its not prey.

I don't understand if its not sequel or anything related to Prey, why can't them just make new title instead use the name Prey?

@MetaMods: I know right, that was such a wack decision. If someone made a petition for them to change the name and start development on a new prey based off the first I would sign it over 1000 times.

If you need to "explain" what your game is, then you've already failed. Maybe next time, don't recycle a old title and not expect people to try to connect the two. Also, your trailer should evoke the tone an feel of the game while showing gameplay. Nobody should be confused.

Arkane studios was found by ex-Looking Glass studios employees. So expect a System Shock vibe from this game.

for all those that have issues with accepting that this game is called Prey:
Imagine it's an alternative timeline where it has no connection to the original one. There fixed xD.
Now you are free to enjoy the title for all it has to offer xD

Prey was a solid game, good enough to finish and enjoyable pretty much all the way threw. I dont really like the idea of stripping the name only, kind of disingenuous.

"Prey is not a sequel. It's not a remake. It has no tie with the original."

Why. If it has nothing to do with it, then why are you calling it Prey? Call it something else. The only reason you're calling it Prey is to attract people who will not read this story and think it does have ties to the original.

@Thanatos2k: I agree, and I'd say that making it a new IP would generate far more excitement than trying to bank off of the name which by now has almost no notoriety beyond the fact that it's sequel was in development hell until it got cancelled outright.

"Prey is not a sequel. It's not a remake. It has no tie with the original. You have to look at it like a reimagining of the idea."

This doesn't make sense. If you are re-imagining the idea, it is tied to the original.

If the only tie is "Aliens abducted the main character", then WHY THE F*** are you calling it Prey?

The original had an amazing premise, an native-american in crisis with his identity and origin, alien abductions, portals, modified gravity shootouts... A re-imagining of Prey could be great, but this is NOT a re-imagining, it's just use of an old IP.

All the idiot gamers will come in saying "Why name it Prey then?". Well...reimagining the IP doesn't require using the released source material. First of all, what we got out of Prey wasn't what the original concept was suppose to be. If you were a gamer before consoles made gamers brain dead, you would learn that Prey was VERY different than what we got in 2006.

You don't just NOT use a name when there is a world already build around an IP. There is a major difference between make a game that utilizes nothing from the IP as opposed to a game that utilizes the IP but not the stuff from another game. Its not a remake or reboot because its not removing anything from the world and its not a sequel or remake of the previous game. How the F*** is that so hard to grasp?

I'll say it again, how hard is it for people to grasp this? Its bad enough when gamers judge games for being like another game instead of its own merits. Yet gamers STILL can't grasp the concept of IP's?

@sbnewsom: the way Arkane Studios is explaining this is that it has NOTHING at all to do with the original Prey world/universe/IP and that it is just a totally new IP using the same name. which is pretty lame to do.

let's see Nintendo make a game called Mario Brothers that is about some french guys who rescue a girl from a giant turtle monster. then have them state that it has nothing to do with the original IP. this is very much the same situation.

@sbnewsom: So out of curiosity, were you following it all the way from 1996 when it was announced and Paul Schuytema was leading the team with Talon Brave as the main character? And the "hook" for the game was the portal gameplay.

If not, then yeah like the guy below me, why are you being rude. I agree with the others, why call it Prey, if they wouldn't have screwed Human Head we'd have a kick-@$$ sequel out already and this wouldn't even be discussed or be an issue.

The E3 trailer looked real interesting, and I could not give less of a **** about the previous Prey getting an authentic sequel. This game is pretty high on my watch list.

That's unfortunate. Prey was a cool game that didn't fully capitalize on it's interesting ideas. The sequel that was being talked about that eventually died also sounded kinda cool, although that too didn't sound like it would capitalize on the cool concepts that the original Prey professed.

Oh well. We may never get that game, but at least there's still the original Prey.

"Prey is not a sequel. It's not a remake. It has no tie with the original" Then why even bother using the name at all? All you're doing is pissing off people who wanted to see the bounty hunter version of Prey 2. Think, what sounds better? Bethesda presents an exciting new IP from Arkane Studios OR Arkane Studios is rebooting Prey and the only thing they're keeping is the name.

I really liked the first prey, thought the environment and crazy weapons that were alive were cool, I don't see why they just didn't do a sequel with those same foundations the first game built. As far as him describing the game as "narrative, action and a little layer of rpg" he might as well have said "its like every other game". Hopefully it turns out good though I'm not ruling it out quite yet, just feel like they shouldn't even call it Prey, just think.of a new name cause it can be misleading to fans of the original
