Prey Director Says Bethesda Forced Arkane To Use That Name, Calls Decision A "Gross" Mistake

Former Arkane director Raphaël Colantonio says he was forced to lie about being in support of the game's name when in reality he was "insulted."

When Arkane Studios' Prey was first announced, it was met with confusion over whether the game was a follow-up to 2006's Prey, a critically-acclaimed first-person shooter developed by Human Head Studios. After it was revealed that the two games shared no connection, some speculated as to why Arkane would choose to title its upcoming game the same name. However, as revealed by former Arkane director Raphaël Colantonio, the development studio had no say in the matter.

As reported by Kotaku, Colantonio has recently appeared on a handful of podcasts discussing the making of Prey--and his complete disdain for the name Bethesda reportedly "forced" Arkane to use. In the latest episode of the AIAS Game Maker's Notebook podcast, Colantonio elaborated on the experience:

"I did not want to call this game Prey," Colantonio told AIAS. "And I had to say I wanted to anyway in front of journalists. I hate to lie… It felt bad to support a message I did not want."

The founder and former director continued on to say he--and many other Arkane employees--felt "gross" using the name, and considered it a "kick in the face" to the developers behind 2006’s Prey. "I wanted to apologize to them many, many times," said Colantonio. "I didn’t really have a chance because I don’t really know those people. It was never our intention to 'steal their IP' and make it ours. It’s gross and that’s not what I wanted to do."

Colantonio also said he believes calling the game Prey might have contributed to the immersive sim's lack of commercial success. According to Colantonio, choosing the name ultimately "backfired," as fans of 2006's Prey may have felt misled while people who didn't like the original didn’t even "look for [the] game."

Colantonio says that while he was "grateful" Bethesda gave him the means and time to make a game and "trusted" him to make something like Prey, he was still frustrated by what happened. Shortly after the release of Prey, he left the studio to found a new team, WolfEye Studios. Earlier this year, WolfEye released its first game: Weird West. Colantonio says his new goal in the games industry is to "stay independent for real" and create (and name) smaller games.

I'm playing through the game at the moment. I agree that 'Prey' doesn't really fit the theme of the game, which is more survival horror.

The marketing (or lack thereof) probably played a much greater role in the game's lack of success. I don't remember seeing anything about the game before stumbling across it in store and trying it on a whim because it came from Arkane, who I knew to be the same people that made Dishonored.

I just finished the game. Whether the name was intended or not, I think it fits the game since the Typhon are hunting for you. I'm kind of curious what name the game would have had otherwise, though.

I agree that the name made it confusing. The game itself was pretty good though..

Still the best game you've made I definitely agree it shouldn't have been called prey especially since the original is a classic that deserves a real follow up

I don't think the name had anything to do with it. If anything, it gave the game more publicity. Immersive sims are a niche genre to begin with, and while Prey was pretty good at times, it's not even remotely comparable to Deus Ex. It shouldn't come as a surprise that the appeal of a space horror immersive sim with bad faces, Prop Hunt type mechanics and a weird "gloo" gun was not very broad.

@Tiwill44: Dude, the game wasn't perfect, but it was still a pretty good horror game. I started playing the game by mistake and couldn't let go of the controller, I played the game from start to finish. I'd like to see a sequel and hopefully Microsoft since they own Bethesda now, they give someone the go-ahead to do a sequel and it doesn't have to be Arkane anyone can do it but I'd rather it be Arkane if anyone do it

@doomsdayhell01: I enjoyed the game too, I just think it sold about as well as it could have. His theory that people who knew about the original Prey didn't buy this one is pretty bogus. If someone saw the game and didn't buy it, they wouldn't have bought it if it had a different name either.

The 2017 Prey was a far better game than the 2006 one. Yes, the name connection is confusing, and I'm not sure what Bethesda was thinking, given the game is far more like System Shock than Prey.

Not sure how they contractually obligated him to lie though.

We had a two great games anyway, but the cost of ripping a name for the sake of press or keeping and IP on use was grossly unnecessary.

That sucks. It was a good name, and a fantastic game, but that's some lame publisher interference.

I wonder what he'd have called the game if it'd been up to him.

There you go. If you didn't know devs lie before, here it is. They're instructed to lie and to smile while doing it.

Although I figure people might have avoided Prey because, if they were like me, they kept getting a freeze at the exact same 15 minute mark in the game on every platform they played it on.

As a big fan of both Prey games (and someone who'd be incredibly happy to se sequels for either), it bums me out that this situation with the name played out the way it did.

Still, drama aside, both are excellent games and I highly, highly recommend anyone who hasn't played them but likes atmospheric FPS games to give them a shot. Very different, but every good games.

@Fernin-Ker: I had no idea, that there were aliens and such in the first Prey. So when all that stuff happened in the beginning, i was blown away, and i loved it. Hoped for a sequel, so the newer Prey, made it confusing for me. But i agree that both games were great..
