Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time Remake Revealed During Ubisoft Forward
The beloved 2003 game is receiving a full remake early next year on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
The surprise was spoiled in advance, but the rumors and leaks were accurate: Ubisoft is developing a remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The company officially revealed the game during its latest Ubisoft Forward presentation, and it's coming to current-gen consoles in January 2021.
Developed by Ubisoft's Pune and Mumbai studios, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is a faithful recreation of the original game with some visual and gameplay enhancements. Yuri Lowentha, who voiced the Prince in the original Sands of Time, reprises his role in the remake.
In addition to the overhauled visuals, game director Pierre-Sylvain Gires says camera and combat have been improved in the remake. In particular, the developers have added a targeting system to the game, which according to Gires "enhanced the velocity of the Prince and his abilities to do amazing moves." However, the new visual style has drawn criticism from some fans.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time originally released for PS2, Xbox, and GameCube back in 2003. The game was met with widespread critical acclaim at the time. GameSpot scored it 9/10 in our original Sands of Time review. "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a game that can be recommended wholeheartedly," we wrote. "It looks fantastic and features responsive controls, some original play mechanics, a good story, and plenty of thrilling adventure. In simplest terms: Do not miss out on this game."
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake launches on January 21, 2021 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The game will retail for $40 USD and includes the original 1989 Prince of Persia as an unlockable bonus. Those who pre-order the Sands of Time Remake will also receive the "Back to the Origins" bonus set, which comes with the following items:
- The Original Prince outfit from The Sands of Time
- The Prince's Original Weapons set
- A Classic Filter that changes the screen to feel "as if players were playing the game back in time"
According to GameStop, a Switch version of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is also coming; however, that edition does not have a firm release date, and Ubisoft did not mention it in its press release. An official tweet that mentioned a Switch version was subsequently deleted.
There were plenty of other announcements during Ubisoft Forward, including the return of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and a closer look at Immortals: Fenyx Rising. You can catch up on all the biggest news from the stream in our Ubisoft Forward recap.
