Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 Trailer Impressions

Konami's annual soccer sim is back again, and it has a few new tricks up its sleeve.

For many years, Pro Evolution Soccer was the untouchable king of soccer games. However, slowly and steadily EA's FIFA franchise has made strides in the right direction to the point where last year's game surpassed Konami's series hands down. The Japanese publisher is fighting back, and this year's update offers several new features. Konami unveiled the first trailer for PES 2010 at E3 2009, and we sat down with our friends at Konami Europe to find out more.

One of the biggest changes this year is in PES's presentation. This year's iteration features improved animations as well as more detailed player models. Skin textures, blemishes, sweat, and even forearm hair have been added or improved to add to the realism of being one of the world's greatest footballers. Apparently the graphics will even show the detail of different weaves in team uniforms. The quality of instant replays has also been improved to reflect those visual updates. The E3 trailer features PES regular and Barcelona winger Lionel Messi and is part of the game's opening sequence.

According to Konami, the development team has gone back to the proverbial drawing board to respond to some of the criticism of previous years. We're promised improved AI, an overhauled, more intuitive online mode, and fewer tacky J-pop tracks for Western audiences this year. The Master League and Be a Legend modes, new additions to the series in recent years, will again return for 2010. Master League has also been extended to allow you to manage a team over a longer period than before.

Also making a return in PES 2010 are official licences for the UEFA Champions League and Europa League (formerly UEFA Cup). There's currently no word on which English Premier League teams will make an appearance or if last year's top-tier licences--Manchester United and Liverpool--will return again. With their performance in this season's Premier League and Champions League, it certainly wouldn't be unexpected, although Chelsea would also make a sensible option.

No Caption Provided

Lastly the new Power Gauge, as seen in the trailer, allows you to manually set certain tactics on a sliding scale, such as the amount of pressure, the defensive line, and receiving positions. Categories will let players change their overall style of play, strategies for players in possession, the frequency with which players change position, and defensive pressure. We're keen to find out more about PES 2010, and the new changes look like a step in the right direction for the series. Check back in the coming weeks and months as we learn more about the game ahead of its October release.

We DON'T need licenses or better graphics! We just need to get the perfect game back. I hope this game makes it.

@ quanggamespot dude how bad are you at this game? this game is so easy that on the hardest level i beat the big teams with small teams. eg bet barca 7-0 with osasuna! in a 5min match. com'on how is offline gaming supposed to be challenging? even online now on fifa(since i bought a ps3 coz next gen fifa is better[used to play pes on pc]) i win with a margin of 5/4. rarely i beat ppl 1-0. there is no challenge in football games anymore. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PLAY HARD NOT DIRTY!

I hope they make a good game, because all PC gamers are left with, is crappy football games. FIFA is great but not on PC! on PC it's still the PS2 port under the coat of a new cover :( too sad....

Agree, I don't care much about the appearance. Please invest in online game! That is no 1 request. If you say you listen to fans then stop doing anything else other than ONLINE ONLINE ONLINE ONLINE ONLINE. Don't do something else because you screwed big time. Now the gameplay is even worst than FIFA in next gen. You know what I enjoy WII PES 2009 much more than anything else. Guess it has a rather old gen graphics but gameplay is good. Online? still suck though and hard to find any opponent. So if you say you really want to hear fans feedbacks? Then No 1 is ONLINE ONLINE ONLINE ONLINE ONLINE ONLINE!!!!!!!!

I have always been impressed with the graphics by Konami, the UEFA Champions league is a nice addition..though I don't own PES 09. The main thing about there product....Licensing. After playing WE11(8), I got tired of the single KONAMI advertisement throughout the stadium, the mechanical style running and what seemed to be easy, predictable patterns when with the ball. Yeah, the licensing issue sticks with me...will wait and check the reviews. Go Bolton, Go FC Copenhagen!!

it is weird that people keep talking about graphics and name of the team, player... does it matter? Where the game-play: easy to play = stupid auto slide for penalty improved AI = stupid AI defenders on human side, supper man on computer side. PES = Superman soccer = stupid damn hard defense, super man striker. In short, every year Konami introduce stupid features so they have task to do for next year. Keep going badly.

the-big-zed is spot on - this game needs to be totally rebuilt, from gameplay to starting menus, however long it must take. I reverted to FIFA last year, and tbh they look like theyre gonna go even further ahead as they are introducing complete 360 degree control rather than the normal 8 directions, as far as i can tell so far, this PES will be very similar to the last

Just do a new engine from ground up and perhaps use two years to do that. Yeah, sounds a bit risky, but that's what they should've done a few years ago. PES just hasn't been able to move on, it still feels like "PES 1,5" compared to the PS2 games (and gameplay might be even worse) instead of being a full fledged sequal, "PES 2,0". By the looks of it, this year won't be different. So no football games for me this year, since even though I know FIFA's strenghts and have played it, I honestly can't see myself buying a FIFA game.

They keep talking about improving the graphics, the problem isn't with the graphics! I read a list of all the things that fifa is improving adding this year, at this early stage it looks like fifa will take the crown again.
