Project Cars 2 is Coming, Will be Crowdfunded

If you dreamed of being a Rallycross spotter, now's your chance.

Project Cars developer Slightly Mad Studios announced that it's making a sequel to its car simulator. Just like the first, Project Cars 2 will be crowdfunded and tested by the community.

No Caption Provided

In a post on the game's website, the developer outlined the additions and improvements coming to the sequel. Among the changes are more tracks and motorsports, such as Rallycross and hill climbs. The game will also feature cooperative careers for players who want to take the role of spotters, co-pilots, or drivers. Additionally, the studio is focusing on making Project Cars 2 a platform for expansion,

This game will be funded via the studio's World of Mass Development crowdfunding platform, and players will be able to assist in development along the way. Contributors will get access to PC builds and will be able to give feedback on the status of the game.

You can read our review of the first Project Cars here. The sequel is planned for PC (including SteamOS), Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

I see their money target for crowdfunding is about $11.02 million USD. I also see the lowest tier is $78 USD. Good luck with that one.

Before you all get mad at the announcement, think about this:

Companies usually start production on new games pretty soon after releasing their latest one. It takes time, and they don't have money to spend on doing nothing. Usually you don't hear about them because they're big companies with big capital, but in this case its crowdfunded so they're having to announce it this soon.

To my knowledge they should continue with updates for a while, I'm guessing they're still designing the next game and won't need the entire staff to do it (and vice versa for DLC/bug fixing).

I was quite upset myself but after reading the comments i realized that there probably is more to it.

I would prefer thousands of DLC cars and tracks over a timespan of 3 - 4 years instead of a new version every 2 years ... (ProjectCARS is not outdatet to me at all)

I think it's a great game and i am very happy to hear that there is a sequel coming.
And to those who think next year we will have PCars 2, i don't think so. Maybe after a year or 3.

Online racing is quite enjoyable in Project Cars. It handles really well, the graphics are ok but for me, the career mode was a massive let down, there is no real reward or challenge as it can be tuned down to easy mode at no detriment to the gamer. Also the penalties need fixing, some places you can run off track, slam into opponents, etc.

What people aren't getting is that game developers constantly have new games in the works.

Normally when a game comes out, the developer will immediately start work on another game (usually a sequel if the previous game sold well). The publisher will quietly fund the game and we will not hear about this game for a couple years until it's close to coming out.

But the fact that Project CARS 2 is also being crowdfunded means they need to get out there and talk about it now. They can't begin working on a new game if they have no funding.

And for the people saying "but they still have DLC to work on!", it doesn't take an entire development team to work on some DLC. It also doesn't mean they're abandoning the first game.

Love that game Project CARS on my i7 GTX780 at Ultra. Plays LOVELY.... Great quality, but may Still needs a little more `finish` to reach gaming perfection status for everyone.

But I guess the game engine needs re-defining for ALL graphics cards and ALL CPUs (specifically to also suit the AMD CPU/GPU mix which is not as perfect)....... It does play pretty good on my i5 R9 280 Crossfire rig though.....

Its a pity `Assetto Corsa` will not let me play nice on my Crossfire R9 280 Graphics Cards. ... Crossfire slightly Glitched/Nerfed. But Racing Farrari on i7 GTX780 in Asseetto Corsa is great...... when I have the handling down.

The slightly older more arcade drive `GRID 2 with AUTOSPORT` plays really great with any half-decent rig within reason. and its a good price also. thats the one to go for if you dont have a top end rig.

Project CARS 2.... Whass-happenin ? More detail plz.

wow... the first game must have sold badly to announce a sequel so soon... they need to make some money back asap... i am not so sure the community will be okay with this move. they shouldn't have announced a sequel for at least a year and properly supported it...

@Xristophoros if anything it's because it sold fuckin loads but everyone stopped playing it because there's no risk reward, just good driving. and that only holds the attention so long.

@SgtSilock: The first game is still being supported while they actually plan and design the sequel. This is just announcing their intention to make another game, not that anything actually exists of it yet or that it'll be out before 2019.

@DrunkenPunk800: This is initial crowdfunding to cover the design of the game. I wouldn't expect it to be released within three years, this is the equivalent of October 2011 for the first game when they opened funding, and that only came out earlier this year. The idea on the website is literally all that exists so far, this isn't a 'the game is nearly done' announcement, this is 'we're thinking of making a game'.

Already? I bought the first game when it launched and thought it was seriously lacking on content. I supposed they were going to expand on the first one before starting development on a sequel so soon. Honestly the multiplayer is lacking features, racing in public lobbies is nearly impossible due to all the players crashing and spinning out at the start of every race. Playing with your friends is also complicated due to the lack of a free practice or something akin to a track day instead of only competitive races. Even during practicing you can't return to the lobby and change your vehicle or track without leaving it entirely. Even though the game has a nice options menu with quite a bit of controller and camera customization they are a bit clunky and unintuitive to use. Not to mention the lack of cars.

So honestly I don't think we are ready for a sequel, not before they adress the current issues with PC1. But that's just me. Perhaps I would be able to deal with the fact that the sequel will be crowdfunded if they updated and fixed the first one before doing so, but as it stands, I don't think Project Cars is worthy of a sequel just yet.

@pez2k_: I hope you're right, but there were not any content updates so far. Me and my friends who also bought it are pretty disappointed with the game's current state, so I can only hope SMS will prove me wrong in the future.

@PixelAddict: Criterion is now only a handful of people supporting other EA games, because they had to lay off almost all of their staff due to not having another game to work on after NFS 2012 released. Ironically that's exactly what SMS are avoiding by starting pre-production of a new game now.

@pez2k_: Yeah, I know it's a pipe dream. I remember reading something a year or two ago about all the higher level and creative folks departing from Criterion, similar to the Rare exodus several years ago.

Still. An arcade-racer-loving gamer can dream.
