Project MyWorld buyer revealed - Report

Former Realtime Worlds chairman Ian Hetherington said to have purchased social gaming platform to bring to market at new company, Kimble Operations.

Realtime Worlds' collapse in August left a number of unanswered questions relating to the future of its online shooter APB and social gaming platform Project MyWorld. For APB, Realtime Worlds' closure left the game officially shuttered, but bankruptcy firm Begbies Traynor has said that it is actively seeking a buyer for the game. Speculation indicates the game may be acquired and relaunched by another company. Project MyWorld, on the other hand, has been bought, though its purchaser had been shrouded in mystery.

Project MyWorld's buyer appears to have surfaced.
Project MyWorld's buyer appears to have surfaced.

It appears as if that mystery has now been resolved, as Gamasutra reports this week that the secretive buyer is Kimble Operations. The company is headed by former Realtime Worlds chairman Ian Hetherington, whose other industry credits include cofounding Wipeout studio Psygnosis (now known as Sony's Studio Liverpool).

"MyWorld was bought a few weeks back by Kimble Operations, which is basically Ian Hetherington, as he wanted the project to get to market," Tahir Rashid, one-time senior artist on Project MyWorld, told the industry news site. After departing Realtime Worlds, Rashid reportedly took a position as co-company director and art department head at independent studio Electric TopHat.

"There are 20 people left from the original MyWorld team that decided to stay with it. We are very pleased the project is not dead and look forward to them getting it out the door," Rashid continued.

Though APB took more than five years to reach market, its life span was a short one. The game launched in late June to a tepid reception. However, within days, Realtime Worlds had announced a "small number" of layoffs and soon acknowledged a laundry list of fixes and improvements it intended to make. The bottom fell out in August, though, when the Scottish developer entered administration (akin to bankruptcy for an American company) and subsequently laid off 185 people. Administration firm Begbies Traynor later rehired 23 members of the 60-person Project MyWorld team to continue work on the project.

Begbies Traynor had not returned requests for comment as of press time.

@MasterTheHero "I sold items in the marketplace and had my subscription paid for by other players, making me one less buyer. " That doesn't make you one less buyer. that makes that other guy 2 buyers instead of one. which doesn't mean a deficit of any kind. also the game employed a taxation system. i believe the amount was 20% or so. for you to get 400RTWP which transformed into 1 month of game time the other must have paid you 500. which means not 400 for his own month but 900 for his and your month. in the end this system allows 2 people to play for the price of 2,25 people. And I know this cause by the end of the game I had about 3000-4000 points.

@Torff that's a nice philosophical twist there, and yes you're right, but then people buy and spend a lot of money on games like this, and are left hanging... What I think the industry needs is more new developers, for fresh ideas, stories, and approaches. There are some terribly underrated games out there, they're awesome and deserve attention, but then there are these games that are crap and everyone falls for it. It's just the way of life i guess.

@ Evilnator Nah, no game Devs must disappear, we need more of them, MUCH MORE, so gaming industry could rise. U think all the good games just ''come to happen'' out of thin air? Nah, its coz of sweat of these bullcrap devs awesome developers keep appearing, with MEGA awesome games. In other words, we NEED ''bad'' for something ''good'' to happen :)

@MasterTheHero 1) The other dev i want to disappear is Cryptic studios... 2) Two teams or not, RTW must invest money into both projects if they want to work on the two of them at the same time. Instead of leaping on to a whole new thing forgetting the old one... it's not like they're workng on a single player game.. 3) A quick buck, is a lot of money gained in a short time period also known as "release date", after which leaping on a new thing and completely ignoring that you have APB to finish, they screwed up. The payment model too, played a role in this. Developers such a RTW and Cryptic are an insult to the people who buy their games. Let's hope Kimble does a better job.

Okay seems we have some uneducated posters in here. 1.) @Evilnator the "dev" has already disappeared, Realtime Worlds is down and out for the count. So who is it you're trying to make disappear? Kimble Operations isn't RTW. 2.) Project MyWorld and APB were two separate development teams. Therefore, the Project Myworld team shouldn't be blamed for the failure of APB. In fact, project MyWorld was shut down purely for the fact that APB was hemorrhaging money and they needed to cut down on costs. MyWorld didn't get a chance to be showcased despite being mostly complete. 3.) If you think 5 years is a quick buck, then you need to go back to elementary school and study re-learn arithmetic. If I had spent 50-100 million developing an MMO, finished it in 5 years, and only managed to secure 100,000 subscribers. Newsflash, I only made 5 million dollars just selling the game at $50.00. Oh and guess what else? Due to the moronic payment plan, people technically didn't have to pay money to continue playing. I sold items in the marketplace and had my subscription paid for by other players, making me one less buyer. So please, get your facts right next time.

Why are they so worried about this My World when it sounds like APB needed some serious help? I mean people bought that game, spent time on it and RTW, to their credit were working on patches but why start another ambitious project when you haven't even completed APB? It's like how Leonardo De Vince lived his life, he is well known as one of the worlds greatest artists and thinkers but what if he had completed more works of art? we would have more from such an interesting mind but his nature was to keep moving forward it seems.....
