Project Scorpio Specs Revealed, Capable Of Native 4K/60 FPS

Microsoft offers another glimpse at Project Scorpio.

Microsoft has revealed fresh new tech specs about its upcoming upgraded Xbox One console, Project Scorpio.

According to a new report from Digital Foundry, the console's specs are beyond what we've seen in the current console generation. Scorpio was able to run a Forza Motorsport demo at 60 FPS in seemingly native 4K, with graphical settings at an "Xbox One-equivalent" level.

In terms of specs, the console boasts a 1 TB hard drive, as well as 12 GB of GDDR5 memory--the same type of RAM contained in the PlayStation 4, though Sony's device only contains 8 GB.

That 12 GB is split into two portions: 8 GB is accessible to developers, while 4 GB is reserved for system use. That's an increase over Xbox One's 8 GB overall memory, which was split the same way into portions of 5 GB and 3 GB, while GDDR5 represents a speed increase over Xbox One's DDR3 RAM.

Digital Foundry--which was shared this information by Microsoft itself--says Scorpio will run all Xbox One games "better," whether they're patched for the new console or not. This is because the console uses no emulation--Xbox One games will run natively using the system's internal power.

Scorpio's GPU--which is 4.6 times as powerful as Xbox One's--is described by Digital Foundry as "a beast." Combined with a faster CPU, the result is a more stable or higher frame rate, no screen tearing, and faster load times. All of that is also reportedly true for backwards-compatible Xbox 360 games, even though changes in hardware between Xbox One and Project Scorpio mean Microsoft has had to go through every existing game individually to make them run on Scorpio.

Scorpio also contains some improvements to Xbox One's features. Game DVR now lets you capture 4K, 60 FPS, HDR gameplay, and it will also allow you to scrub through captured gameplay to find the best screenshots. However, the new console does not contain a Kinect port--you'll need a USB adapter to use your Xbox One camera device.

The site says Scorpio's internal design brief was to scale existing titles up to 4K--and this latest batch of information suggests Microsoft has succeeded. it should be noted, however, that the demo only contained one test version of an unconfirmed Forza game--though the build apparently was built using the same tech used to make Forza Motorsport 6. Additionally, titles that were originally 30 FPS will not go over that unless patched to do so, while the level of optimization seen in all titles could vary.

Users who own 1080p televisions will still be catered for, too: "ultra HD-rendering should super-sample down for those 1080p displays," says the site, meaning games should look sharper, even if you don't own a 4K set.

Although no price has officially been confirmed, Digital Foundry and Eurogamer estimate from the specs they've seen that the console will cost US $499--the same price as the Xbox One at launch. For more on the latest Scorpio specs--including all the technical details of the console's CPU and GPU--check out our rundown here.

We already knew that Scorpio will boast six teraflops of performance--including 320 GB/s memory bandwidth and eight CPU cores--though the console will differ from Xbox One by reportedly not containing ESRAM.

Microsoft says Scorpio is the most powerful console ever made and that it will be more powerful than the PlayStation 4 Pro, which came out last year. It will still support Xbox One games, controllers, and accessories, however.

The new console is due to launch this holiday, but it remains to be seen when Microsoft will start to officially show it off in more detail. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said he is unsure if Microsoft will show off Project Scorpio before E3 in June, while also stating recently that he thinks it's "critical" for first-party games to be ready for the system's launch.

Aha... 4k 60 fps just like the ps3 and xbox one could do 1080p 60 fps.

Well I'm happy to see consoles pushing foward system specs, but let's be honest here, this system has the equivalent of a 200$ "mid-level" graphics card in it. By the time it's released it will be a 120-150$ graphics card. For the same money you'd spend on the scorpio you could get a video card that would flog the console. The upgrade cycle for PC gaming has been dirt cheap for years now. I am still using a first generation i7 CPU (2008) and playing modern games at 2560x1440. I just setup my neighbor (a console gamer for life) with a core2quad (q6600 maybe? I forget) and he upgraded the video card to a 1060 and now hardly touches his ps4.

All my games all play without backwards compatibility issues and I get to enjoy massive game sales all the time :)

Intel and AMD don't want you to know this, but modern gaming really doesn't need much in the way of cpu power, spend it on the gfx card.

@flatovercrest:

Remind me of the MetaCritic score for all those "specs" again please. Seem to have missed them... somehow.

@James_xeno: you pretty much prove my point. Almost all the games people want to play are multiplatform, and given the choice it's almost always cheaper on the PC (to buy the game). Then you have all those PC "exclusives" that either started there (elite dangerous, diablo, etc) or the ones that are only available there (insert zillions of indie titles here).

I mean this *is* an article about a game system that will *only* provide better specs for playing existing games, the same exact games will also be playable on the xbox1 and 1s by Microsofts own admission. So all I'm saying is given this scenario (buying new systems every few years yet maintaining the same game catalog) your better off in the long run with a PC.

I'm far from "anti" console, I bought the Nintendo Switch because it has (and will have) games I'd never see on the PC outside of serious hacks (you can emulate the Wii, it's just not the same). I just feel like too many console players stay console players not because of an informed choice (ie, they just want an "easy" experience, regardless the validity of that argument) but because they believe it's too expensive or too difficult, neither of which are true anymore.

Personally I'm happy to see MS trying to merge their Xbox world with the PC world (though they must be watched carefully as always) and have seriously considered getting a PS4 simply for the few exclusives I can't get on PC (zero dawn looks especially cool). For now I'm enjoying Zelda and it bringing me back to my youth of playing A link to the past on the SNES.

@pasullica: Not sure which console you are talking about - I took my Xbox over to my friend's house 2 days ago and played splitscreen with him without being online. Pretty sure I could have done that with my PS4 too.

@flatovercrest: That would be a PC then. Really don't get the appeal. I used to - a long time ago - but at the price that MS are launching the Scorpio, you won't find the same performance with a pre assembled PC.
Nope, got a laptop for Word etc, and consoles for gaming.

You could put a used graphics card in your grandmother's pc and it would smoke the Scorpio. Consoles are no longer cheaper then PC's.

@sladakrobot: I built a pc from spare parts for my neighbor. It has a core 2 quad from 10+ years ago and 8gb of ram. He stuffed a 100-150$ gtx 1050 in it and it smokes his PS4. Later this year maybe he will upgrade the cpu/mb/ram combo, but for now he doesn't really need too.

I know I'll never convince the guys who have already decided years ago that PC is "2 hard" but the reality is that "cheaper" and "easier" are no longer significant reasons to choose a console. And unless you buy only year old plus used games for your console it's going to be vastly cheaper over the long run to buy then for the PC.

I bought my PC back in 2010 when peiple were buying ps3 and xbox360s. I can still play all the same games I bought back then on the same system. I've upgraded my video card twice since 2010 and each time it leapfrogged past current consoles. And by upgrade I mean spent 10 minutes swapping cards. Zero install issues for stuff like that anymore.

And if I want to play on my tv I can just us my 20$ steamlink and it's just as smooth as in front of the PC.

I'll buy a console for specific games I can't get elsewhere, so I bought a switch. I'll probably borrow my neighbors ps4 to play horizon zero dawn. But if I want to play the newest multiplatform games at their absolute best? Well then I'll play them on a PC. No mainstream console is *ever* going to hold the crown of best graphics ever again. The economics of R&D simply don't make it possible.

You hardcore console guys should love us PC guys. The entire reason you have such nice looking games now is because you can use our 3-4 year old hardware for cheap! ;) enjoy your scorpio with its entry level GPU and it's obselete CPU (sadly it's true. It uses jaguar cores which get stomped by even a many year old 40$ Intel i3). It will look great, for a console.

On a less inflammatory note, I hope the two new consoles do well since they both support HDR, something I want to see catch on asap.

@sladakrobot: you said grandma's pc would smoke and melt, and I pointed out that my 7 year old PC beats scorpio and my neighbors core2 quad (what? 06 maybe?) Would keep up with a scorpio given a 150$ GPU was installed.

@flatovercrest: weel,if that pc of yours can run Forza Apex at ultra setting/steady 60fps, then kudos to you.

But i doubt it. All i read is how pc folks bash the Scorpio and try daily to downplay the amazing specs MS put into Scorpio. It cant rival high end gaming pcs of course but given its suspected pricetag,it wil be a kickace gaming device for console gamers.

@hotwog21: ??? what do you mean by "natively"

i can (and have) put my xbox 360 discs into my xbox one s and can play them... yes you have to wait for it to install / update.. but the same is true for xbox one games.

so not sure what you mean. it doesn't play every single xbox 360 game, but the list of ones that work is pretty big, and quite literally growing by the week.. i think they added 10 more games in the last week or so, to the already existing hundreds of games.

the only current gaming system that beats the xbox one for 'backwards compatibility' is a PC.... by a long long shot.

I've got a feeling they will announce Oculus support. I couldn't care less about what company I buy from, but if that's true then I'd want the native 4k capable machine with room-scale VR. I think it's going to be announced because the Scorpio specs say 'high fidelity virtual reality'. Xbox One controllers were sold with Oculus Rift and there is an Xbox app for Oculus.

@crusadernights: MS owns a stake in the company that license the rumble technology use on PS controllers that's why the original PS3 controllers had no rumble.

@crusadernights: lol I'm sorry if you're to young to remember but right before the PS3 came out both MS and Sony lost a law suit to a company name Immersion who owns the technology use for rumble on the controllers long story short MS bought part of the company.

@crusadernights: Sony have applied for their own patent dual shock 4 so I'd imagine a lot has changed since ps3 years. DW buy what ever brand you are happy with. Gotta love Playstation titles so far.

Just wait until he finds out that you can't even send a resume to a perspective employer without using a MS product our how every major (POS) point of sale system runs on MS software I think he'll be cutting more than he's wiener.

From what I know, it's the other way round, Microsoft pays Sony for every Xbox sold coz of the Blueray license.

@crusadernights: Well its a large combination of brands that co developed the blu ray player. Sony were in charge of the logo itself. but they were also among the first to introduce the drive.

The blu ray drive the xbox one use and previous consoles used are from liteon.

eitherway one brand may be paying the other etc.

in the end they both make or presumably make money from sales.
