PS2's Onimusha: Warlords Will Release As Remaster On PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, And PC

Time to dust off your katana and take another slice at this remastered PS2 and PC game.

Onimusha: Warlords is the game that officially kicked off the Onimusha series, spawning many sequels to the fantasy action game. Now, the PS2/PC game is returning in remastered form, and will release on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC at the start of the new year. You can get a look at the new version of the game in the announcement trailer above.

The action game, first released in 2001, follows samurai Samanosuke Akechi and ninja Kaede as they fight to rescue Princess Yuki. Set in feudal Japan, the two must save Yuki from mysterious demons that have invaded her castle while uncovering the fiends' plot. Players wield katanas and other weapons as Samanosuke and Kaede battle their way to the castle.

Now Playing: Onimusha: Warlords - Announcement Trailer

The game is receiving a high-definition graphics overhaul of its characters, environments, and cinematics, and Capcom is adding widescreen support as well that allows for quick changing between widescreen and classic display modes. The studio is also adding support for analog sticks to boost movement accuracy during combat. Unlike the original Onimusha: Warlords, Easy Mode will now be available from the start of the game (whereas you had to fail a battle several times before it would unlock in the 2001 version). Lastly, a new soundtrack is being added to the game after the original game's composer was found to be using a ghostwriter (and possibly even faked being deaf).

Onimusha: Warlords HD will release on all systems on January 15, 2019 and will cost $20. In North America, you can already pre-order a physical copy of the game, with a digital pre-order coming soon. Players in Europe will be able to buy the digital version only.

But I liked the old game's soundtrack...

Anyway, I always thought this game should return as a Souls-like, and Nioh proved me right about that. Glad to see it's coming back in some fashion. Hopefully to GoG.

I am happy to hear something is going on this gen with this series. I have missed it so much and have always wanted a new addition. However, I do feel they should have remastered the entire series as an HD collection not just the original. I want it all.

seems like capcom has so little faith in this series to put out a respectable collection (all 4 games) that it has resorted to this sleazy tactic. sorry, i will wait this one out, capcom. low sales of this single game remaster may be the result of others such as myself passing on this business model but not on the games themselves. why other people are happy to support this is beyond me. i mean, come on... it would not cost a lot to throw 4 games on one disc with a 1080p upscale. the bare minimum of work like how the dmc collection was handled. what is the problem here?

@Xristophoros: Porting a game is not just pressing a button, man... They had to rework the entire code to work on new hardware, as well as overhauling characters, environments, and cinematics... For 15 dollars it would be perfect... But for 20 it is still a good value to me...

I guess doing one is the way for them to test the water on Onimusha players these days..

@edussz: i know that, but all im asking for are barebones ports of all the entire series. dmc and all the resi ports are not as much work as you might think. they have the most basic resolution bumps for the most part. not even sure if they bothered to update the ui lol... i think everyone was expecting an onimusha collection, not a single game remaster and "wait and see approach". this is a real bummer. who knows, maybe in a few years they will come to their senses and release a proper collection. until then, i will wait and not support this approach. and like you mentioned at the end, capcom really has no faith in this series if they are too spineless to do it justice with a collection.

@Xristophoros: Capcom has faith in the series (hence why they're even doing a single remaster at all instead of ZERO Onimusha remasters). They just don't have faith that consumers are openly willing to open up their wallets day 1 to a niche IP from 2 generations ago. There's a difference.

@PSYCHOV3N0M: well, that is your opinion. i completely disagree. they are testing the waters because they have no faith in the ip. they need to be proven wrong by surprisingly high sales before they release a proper collection. i find this tactic embarrassing, especially when you consider the later games are far superior and would garner more praise than the first entry. at least if they bite the bullet and put out a proper collection, they would know definitively that there is no interest for the ip (or that there is) and move on. just like how they broke up the megaman collections into three releases, capcom is still blundering as a company in many ways.

Played again through this a couple years ago. The game on ps2 (using a CRT TV) looks surprisingly good, even for today's standards, thanks to the pre rendered backgrounds (god, wish they make a new game using that "technique"). The models looks better then most ps3 games, even some ps4.

Great game!

Okay, that’s it. I’m convinced now that some structural changes have occurred at Capcom.

First RE7 returns back to its roots, then Monster Hunter World releases on current gen platforms, then RE2 REmake is shown and announced to release in just half a year… now this?!

Capcom… Oh, Capcom… We’ve missed you so much.

@dorog1995: Nope. It has a 2 in the end. That's a "don't buy me" as far as any sort of new audiences are concerned. If this does well, they'll maybe do 2 next.

@Bellum_Sacrum: 2 in the first cutscene explains everything that you need to know.(I myself played 2 first and had no problem with that)

2 is superior than warlords in every way.

@dorog1995: ya, but why would they skip 1 when they can remake both eventually and make money on two games instead of just the one?

@smilingdeath: why did the not put all the onimusha games on a single disc instead, like the dmc collection? it is clear capcom has no faith in this series to even re-release them properly. people should be up in arms about this.
