PS3 gains on Wii in Japan

Consoles and handhelds fly off the shelves in island nation as the holiday season approaches.

Sales of hardware units were up across the board in Japan last week, according to figures released by Media Create.

Nintendo's DS Lite continued to remain on top, despite the PlayStation Portable's three-week surge following the release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and the new PSP Slim.

Unit sales were up across the board compared to the week before, with the DS Lite shifted 76,243 units on the week, with the PSP being its stiffest competition at 59,792 systems. The Wii sold 27,502 units, while the PlayStation 3 followed with 18,785--widening the gap from PlayStation 2 sales, which stood at 11,698. Xbox 360 figures were also up for the week, rising to 3,718.

In comparison, the week before saw the DS Lite selling 70,608 units, PSP 58,669, Wii 24,932, PS3 17,130, PS2 10,281, and Xbox 360 3,011.

@Phazevariance "Wii outsold PS3 by 47% last week and 46% this week. Yes, the gap closed 1%..." Where the hell did you learn to do math. The figures from two weeks ago show the Wii with a 45.545826....% advantage on top of the PS3's sales figures, and last week's figures showing the Wii has a 46.4040457...% advantage over the PS3's sales figures; even in percentages the PS3 is not even catching up.

NitroSpark says Why is the PS2 still doing good business? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Simply because it's a great console. Sony really shot themselves on the foot this time around, but it's undeniable that the PS2 deserved its position as the "dominant winner" last gen. I don't even like Sony, but I won't refrain from admitting that.

wizard_levy, To "gain on" someone, you actually have to go faster than your competition. PS3 may have picked up the pace, but I just can't see it catching up on the Wii until it actually starts outselling it. Just like a marathon, the totals need to be seen, not just the current trend. BTW, you missed my username by one digit...

Wii outsold PS3 by 47% last week and 46% this week. Yes, the gap closed 1%... ooOOooo. Remember that this is just in Japan also. The numbers in NA are much different.

Jimbo102661 and everyone else, apparently. They never said PS3 sales surpassed those of the wii, they just said that the gap is diminishing. before it was 6-to-1, now it's not even 2-to-1. How about reading properly before bashing? it comes to me as a shock that so few here know what "gains on" can mean.

After reading the article and then double-checking the headline, it's apparant to me that someone did not do their math homework. Not only did the Wii still outsell the PS3, even the difference of units sold week-to-week remained in the Wii's favor. (Once again, do the math.) If this difference was the other way around, the headline could be slightly more justifiable.

Wow, this article's title is EXTREMELY misleading. They say the PS3 is gaining on the Wii, leading me to believe that the Wii and PS3 are neck in neck with regards to sales, but that's simply not the case. Look at the sales stats here: the week before had Wii at 24,932 vs. PS3 at 17,130. This week the Wii is at 27, 502 vs. PS3 at 18,785. So wait, the Wii increased from one week to the next by over 3,000, while the PS3 increased by over 1,500. Not to mention the Wii outsold the PS3 both weeks. From these statistics, how is the PS3 gonna catch up to the Wii? Oh that's right, they can't. The PS3 can't start catching up to Wii in any territory until it starts outselling it. Whoever came up with this article's name is either trying too hard to create drama and excitement in news where it does not exist, or they are biased towards (and maybe on the payroll of) Sony....

I can understand clearly WHY sales figures are important. But I just preferred the days when you didn't need to worry about that stuff for the sake of playing the games that you want. Sega had one specific library of games, Nintendo had another. It was quite easy to choose between the two as both consoles did things quite differently. I never had a megadrive because the images went to 1080p, i never used the megadrive for media functions so I never had to worry about any internal memory-space or noisy disc drives or overheating. My friends with doom and the PC used to bicker about that stuff, and spent most of their time tinkering with their settings to get games running at "higher resolutions" and things like that. The day when consoles started to become like PC's just made things completely different. Personally, I am happy with the Wii because I don't feel pressurised into adverts, updates, latest movie trailers etc. Its like an old games system, but with unique controls. mtofu, you make some good points about certain games not being able to be on the wii. But the way I think of it is exactly like comparing a snes/megadrive to a PC. Usually all PC ports to consoles at the time were pretty crap in comparison. Expansive worlds, fast graphics and CD quality sound were the PC's game. The consoles had games the pc never had, and the pc had games that consoles never had. It was two different worlds, and it was pretty great that way. PC's were always lightyears ahead of consoles. But today, you can see PC games looking pretty much exactly the same on consoles, except for some slightly better framerates and clarity. Today its like having a PC on your tv, what with movie watching, web browsing, online gaming - except you do this with a joypad. People moan and brag about visual clarity. This should only really matter on a PC because the monitor is right infront of your face. But you should sit several feet away from a TV screen - you will lose alot of that clarity purely from distance. I am just a bit down about how consoles are more like PC's, and people talk about what they need from them like they were talking about a PC. For me, its great to just buy a games machine and play games on it. Wii games probably won't be as amazing in tech-specs as 360 and ps3 games - but when I had a megadrive, I never really worried about Doom not being on the megadrive, because I was playing other games on there which weren't on the PC. Alot of pro's outweighed the cons because the console games were so unique back then, and pc games were unique to pc aswell. I hope you can see what I mean here. Sometimes its good to have console gaming and PC gaming in two different leagues. But now this generation is more "connected". Everyone starts worrying about sales figures because of developers using their money on a console which sells more, they worry about specs because they want to know if they can get the best clarity, the best games etc, people also worry about getting game trailers quicker than other consoles, they worry about the amount of users on server etc.. I mean, alot of people just watch a good movie on a regular TV set with a bunch of friends, or go to a regular theatre to see it. Its a good experience that way. Its the same as if you play any sort of game, on any sort of TV, on any console - if you are having a good time on it - then you shouldn't worry about specs and sales because what matters is the enjoyment you are having. I used to be a saturn fan, and sales figures and specs were a big deal back then, because ps1 fanboys used to make fun of the saturn so bad. Even though I really liked alot of the saturn games, people just trounced everything it did and it died. Attitudes like that made the ps2 popular aswell. But now the only difference between specs is between the wii and the 360/ps3/pc because the Wii will have alot of games that the others wont have, and the 360/ps3/pc will have games that the wii wont have. For me, its good to have a big clear different choice again. Because spending gaming years worrying about specs and sales isn't really worth it. People enjoy DVD's all over the world, there is no bickering about people with small tv's or anything like that. For example, I can say I watched Die Hard 4 on dvd and we end up talking about the movie. If die hard 4 was a game and I said "I played die hard 4 on the 360". The conversation usually automatically goes to "the ps3 version is better, the graphics are sharper" and the bickering starts again. :(

Sales figures are important because they ultimately impact what games will end up on what system. Because of the PS3's slow start a lot of exclusive titles are now available on the XB360. Also, a system processor strength will impact how games are developed on a system. I just saw the preview for Burnout: Paradise City and I don't think having such a wide open system is possible on the Wii. If it is, sorry. I wouldn't know because I've never played an open-ended structured game on the last generation like GTA titles. As for '08 PS3 line up... I think more systems will sell at the release of MGS4 than Smash Bros. Or it could be that Wii sales can't increase any more because they're supply is always tapped out... Sure I'd love all games to be available to all systems, but then why even bother having more than one system?

You Sony fans are being a bit wishful about the "Great 2008 lineup that will make them own everything else", I don't think you're remembering that games like Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart Wii are also coming out at the same time. And yeah @ GrimBee's comment, I agree with the graphics part.... It's one of the reasons Wii is so geat, it's made people realise that graphics aren't the most important thing, but at the same time can produce games with good graphics and gameplay. Sony has put too much effort into graphics and power and all that stuff for PS3, and it seems to have cost them.

I was brought up in the days of the NES, Master system, megadrive and snes. My cousin had an atari st (I really enjoyed the atari st) and my other cousin had an amiga (i liked the amiga also, but used the atari more). I could never understand why atari st and amiga owners were such fanboys against eachother. Then, when sonic came out. I used to defend sonic games over mario. I thought that the megadrive games were better and not so "childish". Then came the 32bit era, and suddenly I started reading about specs. But not knowing what they all meant. I had a sega saturn, but the ps1 did alot of games better, smoother graphics, more choice of games and more stores sold ps1 games. It was then that everyone started bickering about which console has the best graphics, and specs. When the n64 came out, you couldn't shift the playstation scene away with better graphics. I even used to slag off mario 64 no matter how many people said that it was game of the year, etc. As the years went on, I found myself bickering like my cousins did with their atari st and amiga, over tiny details like cpu archetecture, sound chips and things like that. "my images are sharper than yours" sort of arguments. The fun of just slapping in a cartridge and playing a game started to fade away. And then instead of saying things like "this game has over 100 levels!" it turned into "this game has photo-realistic backgrounds!". Suddenly, games were eagerly awaited for the graphical boundaries. If you read the back of game boxes from the 80's and 90's you will notice the description about how many levels are in the game, what you do in it and the graphics. Now, you barely even get a description, the screenshots do the work. I think that people are too concerned with what is on paper than whats on their own screens. If I had paid attention to what was on paper back in the day, I would of never played the games which I know and love, because not all of the games I like sold loads of copies, or were even in the charts. Reading about specs, sales figures, what analysts think etc... Gamers somehow feel the need to take this information in. But to me, this is like watching your favourite movie - but then reading all the financial paperwork afterwards. announce a good film to a friend, you have to say how much it cost to create, or how popular it is... Can't something be good if it sells a moderate amount or was cheap to make? Somehow, the old computer era of the amiga vs atari has crept into consoles. Now people bicker about specs rather than the games themselves. I see more people arguing about how difficult it is to develop for the ps3 than talking about the games themselves.. If you are a developer, then you should worry about such things. But when you buy a console to play the games that you want to play - why do people let sales figures effect their enjoyment of a console?

I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHY THE JAPANESE DON'T BUY XBOX360s ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's called "job security". We used to believe in it here when people used to say "buy American". And no, buying a 360 isn't securing American jobs because the consoles are made in (big surprise) CHINA!

After reading all the crap on here I think most people are missing the point, playing games should be FUN. If fun for you is great graphics and the best online play then buy a 360, If fun for you is playing for short amounts of time with easy controls buy a Wii. If fun for you is wasting $400 (£300) on a paper weight in the hope that MGS4 will be released this decade buy a PS3. Unlike most of the fanboys on here I actually own all of the consoles, so I believe I have earned the right to have an opinion and in my opinion Sony is ripping people off, I'm lucky I have a 60GB backward compatible PS3, I'd not buy one that could not play PS2 games, as for Blu-ray, yeah it looks nice, I got Casino Royale as a free one. But I'd not pay £20 - £25 for a film that can be bought of £10 on DVD. As for the Wii, yeah you have to wave a remote around some of the time, but it has one thing the other 2 do not have, its Virtual Console, its worth buying a Wii just for that and of course its the most fun to play with other people that are actually in the room with you. And finally the 360, it just kicks arse, It has the most games and loads of FPS, which I like. Its also the best for playing online.

Well yay for Sony. It was only a matter of time before Sony started gaining some ground back in Japan. I'm not saying they'll beat Nintendo because they wont. But Sony is a Japan based company that's always sold well in Japan, and will continue to do so. Microsoft, well that'll never happen. A Dragon Quest rip off and an Final Fantasy rip off wont change that. Neither will a bunch of crappy Japanese aimed games either. If it wont sell in NA/EU also, don't bother making it for the Japanese. They probably wont buy it anyway.

The true question is - where are all the game developers' interests at? No development interest = no games Developer interest lies with the market share, which right now is DS/Wii/XB360. Ps3 needs to gain more marketshare in order to get developer interest.

**09231991** you are WRONG! yeah the wii may be lacking hardware. BUT, you forgot to mention ALL those down falls for the ps3. I'ts overpriced. There isn't even one AA game (MAYBE MGS4). and, the wii is selling the best because it si the funnest... and i dont know how else to tell you this but no one wants the ps3 because it is an overpriced piece of *U KNOW WHAT* . ps3 is simply loosing millions of dollars cause the wii is outselling it like crazy. The XBOX360 is like a mix of the wii and ps3. although the gameplay is pretty good, they dont have much selection for A games and over other than sports, FPS, shooters, and RPGs. Xbox 360 is probably the second best selling one up there cuz of its hardware attributes. so this is how its gonna go Wii Xbox360 (somewhere in the bottom) ps3

I think waving a wand around in front of a TV to swing a tennis racket instead of actually just playing tennis is pretty geeky orez_9. A PS3 is a games console, not a substitute for every other hobby known to man. Whats next? "Walk to the fridge and eat some cold pizza" only for nintendo Wii, because they've done everything else you can do without a console!

The Japanese buying microsoft consoles means they support americans. And we all know thats not true (aside from the thousand fast food chains in the country). Anyways, I've always had faith in PS3. BTW, wii is only outselling everything else according to % since k-mart shopping familys can only afford to buy a wii for their kids. And those families make up most of america.
