Update: According to a developer working on Vita games planned for this year, the continued support for the store does not extend to new game submissions. These will still only be available until this summer.

Now Playing: Remember When PS3 Almost Lost the Console War?

Sony has reversed course on a controversial move, stating that it now plans to continue supporting purchasing functionality for the PS Vita and PS3 after previously planning to shut down the stores this summer. The PSP will still be closed as planned.

The move comes amid weeks of outcry from PlayStation fans, many of whom criticized the company for removing their ability to continue purchasing games for platforms they still used. In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan explained that the company understood it was the wrong move.

"Recently, we notified players that PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita devices was planned to end this summer," says Ryan. "Upon further reflection, however, it's clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I'm happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021 as planned."

The blog post goes on to explain that the initial decision was made due to numerous factors, including the challenges associated with supporting an older commerce platform and dedicating resources to newer project. But Ryan says that the company now understands that passion its fans still have for the hardware, which helped inform the reversal.

The PSP store will still be taken offline this summer as planned, but for now you don't need to continue panic buying titles only on both PS3 and PS Vita to have them secure in your download library. Still, here are some good suggestions for both platforms if you're already there.

So basically they're not closing them ... for now. But they will eventually. The fact of the matter is, they still closed the PSP store, and that system sold like 80 million units. They will close these other stores, including PS4, eventually. Maybe the plan is to take away all these older stores, so you won't be able to buy them individually anymore, and only get access to them via their subscription service.

@Mraou: Pretty much. They all do that.

That's why Sony needs to bring back their PS1 and 2 emulators. Having the ability to play older games is more important than the digital stores. At least then we would have the ability to play our own games on the device, and no digital closure would affect that.

Also have to keep in mind PS3 was in an era when it was free to have an account and not pay monthly/yearly so you could play your games offline, etc. Nowadays everything is just so digital only. But I still collect physical copies of classic Xbox games and even uhh PSP titles.

I wonder how much money was made over the past 2 weeks, with people (myself included) clamoring to buy titles before they were lost forever. That sure feels a lot like extortion.

I hope it was worth the terrible PR, Playstation.

I would like to congratulate everyone (including myself) that over the weeks kept giving Sony hell for trying such an awful move on legacy gaming.

Now we can still enjoy their older titles even if their latest consoles can't play them.....lol

Thank you very much, Sony. Had the stores been closed, both new players and players who already own the consoles would be unable to officially play hundreds of games, specially PS1 and PS2 classics (which are becoming very rare, physically). I still rock my PS3, more than the PS4, I'd say.

@caiol92: your point is valid, but they were screwing up big time, specially with Vita users

Thank Microsoft, who is actually doing a decent job at preserving digital games

But in the meantime, Sony has made some BOKU dollars on people panic buying games and PS Store Cards and adding funds to their accounts.

I myself bought Store cards. I know I will still use them, but I only purchased them because of Sony's news.

Sony needs to act more intelligently. They are reckless.

It's sad that they put themselves in this position in the first place and had to be forced to backtrack - the company who constantly bleats "For the gamers". But at least they did listen. That's a rare thing these days.

It's nice to see customers drive large corporations to rethink their strategies. Microsoft did an about face after the backlash regarding their XBL Gold price increase. Sony also did an about face after customer spoke out. There are some really good games still on the PS3. Not everyone upgrades to the latest consoles so it's nice they are preserving their games legacy.
