PS4 controller to include LCD touch screen, biometric sensors?

Source says Sony could replace long-running DualShock controller with an all-new pad for next-generation console.

The PlayStation 4 could introduce a new controller, pushing the longstanding and iconic DualShock input to the background. A "senior games studio" source speaking to CVG claims Sony's research and development department has been busy testing numerous controller designs for the still-unannounced next-generation machine. One such design includes an LCD touch screen and biometric sensors on its grips.

No Caption Provided

Biometrics technology is capable of reading data from a gamer's body, including heart rate and temperature, among other things. Half-Life and Portal studio Valve is also experimenting with the technology.

This information is backed up by other sources who told Eurogamer that Sony has been testing a PS4 controller with a touch screen and biometrics functionality for as long as six months. The designs reportedly change every month.

The DualShock controller was introduced with the original PlayStation in 1997, and a version of the pad has been used in every PlayStation console since. It is not clear if the DualShock will be replaced entirely by a new controller or if the PS4 will be compatible with older inputs, similar to the way Wii Remotes work with the Wii U.

Sony is reportedly gearing up to announce the PS4 at an Apple-style media conference at the end of March.

@mrblue2800 i remember the dreamcast VMU first one that did this display on controller thing and it was indeed very useful for NFL games to select your plays also on baseball ones for selecting your pitching moves , without the other player looking at them, this is what it will be useful for, and cant imagine anything else.

I just hope it has the pressure sensitive buttons because we all know what a paradigm shift that was for gaming when PS2 came out. Yeah... I'm kidding.

no need for this, the ps2 game days were best...even the motion controller is too over the top and not needed...keep it simple to what made video games awesome and fun to begin with....they are trying to change things with games too much and theres no need to be fixing something thats never been broke...i dont like where games are heading

Please god no. I bought a Wii U and ended up returning it to Wal-Mart because the controller is just to heavy for long play sessions. Plus, I feel ripped off having half the price of the console invested in the controller. No thanks Sony.

A touchscreen is good allows for less dumbed dowb games cause you have more buttons specially for rpgs etc.

But biometrics - i find this bollocks. It doesnt make any sense, What if you are sick and have a higher tempereature for a week? what if you have a conidiotn like me where you have a higher heartebat and blood pressure as a standard? its a stupid nonsensical gimmick that cant work cause people have different body function parameters

I like the DS3, maybe some minor improvments are needed such as increased sensitivity and making it a little (15%) bigger. As for the buttons i like them where they are. The one thing i did like about the Wii mote was that had speakers. I think that would be cool have on both PS4 and nextbox. They would really add depth to games, especially horror games.

I see a gloomy horizon for next gen consoles, very shady an unpleasant. I think they've used up all their innovative ideas in hardware developments and are now scratching the bottom of the barrel for scraps. Sad, just sad...

More pandering to the casual crowd, it seems. I hope this is wrong. And I hope the new Xbox won't be like this.

Remember the original ps3 batarang and the sixaxis?, well apparently Sony does not, their efforts should solely be on making PSN not so freaking backwards thought out in regards to account creation and management

Don't you guys know any history? The Sony Playstation was originally a Nintendo's 32 bits, but for reasons that I don't remember, Nintendo didn't want a CD videogame, so they've sticked with the nintendo 64 and sony developed the playstation without nintendo's help.

Who copied who first?... there is no such answer.

But since always, sony made to the market latter than the other companies.

PSONE was launched latter than the Sega Saturn (and other platforms like 3DO and Neo Geo)

PS2 launched later than DreamCast

PS3 launched later than XBOX360

PS4 Will probably be launched later than the XBOX720 if history continues.

Sony copied the wii and the kinect because they've realized that there was a new market being born. The "hardcore gamers" that represent the normal market, and the new market that was all about the casual gamers, that they can have fun with the videogames without the dificulties that a normal controler and their button presses offers to their non used videogame routines.

The hardcore gamer that represents a large portion of the market still wants the classical videogame experience, while the casual gamer, that was a branch new market, wanted a diferent experience.

The Wii got this portion of the market earlier, but the kinect got there and took a portion of this market. Sony with the move didn't had the same success as the kinect did taking wii's market portion.

Now you guys can say what sony is trying to do, and, probably they're trying to copy nintendo, but they're not making the right efforts in the games and in understanding the videogame market and needs.

In the end is cool to have others consoles with a pad controller, games like Comand & Conquer that is an RTS (generally only goes to Xbox or Ps) will be better than play in the PC!

15 years is a good run, it's about time. I know it is an icon now as well as a controller, but right now it's just the most ergonomically uncomfortable controller of the bunch.

Wonder what the new controller will look like? Dreamcast controller, maybe?

@PixelAddict Honestly, I find it much more comfortable than the 360 controller. I guess it really just depends on how you hold a controller and the size of your hands. -Well, that and preference. It's actually 90% personal preference. "Ergonomically," they're pretty much the same, as they both have the same amount of ups and downs.

The Dualshock should have been replaced for the PS3... but to replace it with something with a touch screen is just wrong.

@WantYouBad yeah the move has no software to back it, is a good idea and does look pretty funky at night. Your right Sony will push the price up with a tablet screen, maybe as an optional extra. i dunno. Many of us are used to the six axis controller, i think changing it will be a bad idea. Though i understand the hardware needs to progress. it ll b interesting to see what develops

Dualshock 3 with upgraded triggers, a little lip at the bottom is all that's needed. Controller is great: lite weight, quick charge time, no removable batteries needed, great range for large rooms. I would like to see a controller design made for fps games (and others of course)

I would be fine with a small 2-3" screen that allows customization button controls and adjustments like sensitivity, also select start, and a few quick menu option like, weapons, maps, armor, etc instead of having to go deep into a menu.

The main shape and size of the controller would not change, Although a larger controller would be great for me, my hand feel crowded on the ps3. Please dear god move the right stick down and not in the same plane as the left.

For games I would like it to have none important gaming information displayed- things that you do not have to glance down at the controller constantly. But say for rpgs quests, inventory, stats - that would be great.

Sports game a great way to pick your plays, shooters, great way to pick you load outs, and it could even be used like a tri-corder or PDA like device in adventure games. There are a ton of great ideas it could be used for and it would not take a high end ipod touch tablet but more like a cheap pda or touch screen phone. It does not have to have retina display just enough to read text and colors.

Also - 50-60 dollars for a controller is ridiculous for this generation official licensed product, they are making 60% or more overhead in profit. At least a 50-60 next gen controller with a screen in it would be worth it, that or make a simple controller for 50% less.

There was a small screen pda thing for the dreamcast controller and it was awesome, games like skies of arcadia used it for some great content. But the idea of a Wii U controller sends shivers down my spine.

@vader501st the sticks can be a little tricky for precision, they lack the dexterity of the six axis sticks. Im sure the vita will have some role in it however

You'd think sony would have learned from the sixaxis that gimmicks aren't going to cut it.

Crossing my fingers for a simple dualshock 4 with better trigger design.

hey hey sony and microsoft take your time and release the consoles with out hardware issues. sony has a pretty good track record but if they try to rush ps4 out the door to beat microsoft and screw it all up its going to hurt them pretty bad. i hope they come out last again but less than a year after 720 ...lol it would be great if they came out the same month. not great for my pockets though..

I don't get the purpose of biometric sensors. If your heart rate goes too high do they have a built in screensaver with cute bunnies eating carrots in a field to bring it back down? I mean your sitting on your couch for god's sake, you're not going to pass out from getting too excited about any game.

What i'm concerned is if it will be at a consumer friendly price. The Dualshock 3 costs around 50 bucks now but for something with these feaatures, hope it doesn't surpass 90 dollars.

The dual shock needs to be updated and made more ergonomic, in it's current form it's uncomfortable even for short periods and really isn't catered to people with larger hands. It needs to be more like the 360 controller.
