PS4 dev: Virtual reality and augmented reality "the future of gaming"

Sony Online Entertainment development director David Georgeson says he is "hugely interested" in Project Morpheus.

What will the future of gaming look like? According to EverQuest studio Sony Online Entertainment's development director David Georgeson, virtual reality and augmented reality experiences are what's in store down the line.

"VR and AR are things that I personally am extremely excited about. I honestly think that’s the future of gaming," he told IGN.

During GDC 2014 last month, Sony officially announced its virtual reality head-mounted display Project Morpheus, which features a 1080p display and a 90 degree field of view. You won't need to pay $1000 for the tech and it won't launch this year, but that's all we know.

Xbox maker Microsoft is also reportedly working on an unspecified VR/AR initiative.

Outside of a handful of tech demos, Sony has not announced any games that will officially support the Project Morpheus. However, Georgeson teased that we could see Project Morpheus support for future SOE games down the road.

"I will tell you this though: I’m hugely interested in Project Morpheus," he said. "So… we’ll see what happens." SOE is currently working on EverQuest Next and EverQuest Next Landmark.

Driveclub developer Evolution Studios experimented with Project Morpheus, but the results left much to be desired, and now the game will not have any VR support whatsoever.

The main problem with VR is simulation sickness; that's going to drive most consumers away regardless of the platform. Any sort of latency issues and unnatural motions will drive your body nuts. As amazing as the experience can be, I don't know many people who would continue to use it at the risk of getting sick with each play.

AR has more potential because of the rise of wearable tech and the lack of any associated sickness. AR just doesn't get the same amount of press as VR so most people are unfamiliar with it. But imagine playing a "Nerf Zombies"-type of game with a simple controller and a 'Google Glass'-type of device (something better would of course be necessary). You could take an experience like that anywhere. In tangent, an augmented reality game in production that has potential is Clandestine: Anomaly by Zenfri (<< LINK REMOVED >>) but it is more Tower Defense than FPS.

The main limitation for AR is hardware, whereas VR has dedicated devices such as Morpheus and Oculus Rift (still in production of course). The only "dedicated" AR devices are the Epson Moverio BT-200s and Project Tango, which aren't really meant for gaming by any means.

Neither VR or AR are the "future of gaming" but they'll each have their impact. I imagine AR will be more mainstream because of it is applicable to consumer devices (smart phones, tablets, wearables, etc.) while VR will be mainly a niche genre because of the need for specialized devices and natural seculsiveness. We'll see what happens though.

This ain't your daddy's VR. They say the Rift makes converts on contact. Hopefully VR will have a strong showing at E3 this year. Until then, I expect the cries of fad/gimmick to continue unabated.

Also, motion controls and VR are made for each other. The only reason motion controls haven't succeeded yet is because VR was absent. Think about it.

Reading these comments from gamers are just silly. If You don't like VR, don't use it. Simple. Keep using Your TV and when VR goes into your eyes or contact lenses then come aboard.

And LOL at people on here talking about Holodecks, a pure piece of fiction that generates matter from nothing in a room. Now I love TNG, but remember this show had Fat *** computers in it and our cell phones today are smaller then their communicators and it's what like the 23rd century for them? It's mostly because Human thinking is linear and not exponential. People in the 80s thought that people in the 23rd century would still have Gigantic Computers that do simple tasks. And Robots who get sick :P

Science Fiction isn't the best thing to compare technological advancement with, You should actually study what real Scientists and Engineers are working on in the real world.

But all in all, I do see fear in these comments, 3DTV was a failure but it never got reception like the Rift has gotten, not ONCE. I've heard nothing but good and more good from developers and the people at GDC.

It might be, but not now and certainly not on the Ps4 which will not be able to output 3D 1080p on 60fps. OR is interessting (I actually own Dev Kit 1 and have Dev Kit 2 preordered), but it still has to prove it is worth its price

The future of gaming? Not sure about that myself. Definitely not the immediate future of gaming. Until it's in millions and millions of people's homes and many different devs, studios, publishers back it and support it then it won't be the future. By 2017 you'll probably still have never used one to play a Sony game on your PS4.

Well I guess I'll have to drop out if it's the future of gaming, I can barely do 3D without getting a headache. I suppose it's cool for those who can do it but I'll have to pass.

@blueboxdoctor One of the problems with regular 3D is that both images have to appear on the same screen, so you get clipping effects when the second image should actually be projected off screen, That and the fact that your eyes are focussing on something that is apparently closer or further than the actual true plane of focus. At least one of these a 3D headset will not suffer from ... the other requires display technology we aren't likely to have any time soon (likely holography or direct projection onto the retina).

Why exactly do people seem to want VR etc. to fail? If they don't do this how will they ever perfect this technology and make something truly amazing that isn't just a gimmick? Should they just stop because it's failed before and some people don't like it? Of course not, they should keep making this stuff because it gets better all the time. Even devices like Kinect have done so much for motion controls even if it's not nowhere near perfect, but it's a big step.

Future........ Shmuture

Yet another band-wagon Fad for company's to jump on I see.

Sure im sure VR will have its application uses, wheather Gaming will become a widespread one will remain to be seen, although I am as sceptical about this as I was about the 3D band-wagoning

VR. LOL. That's not the immediate future of sh*t. Sony is headed towards bankruptcy and they're spending money on that risky project? What a joke. XBO has all of the momentum now. Sony, you need games and OS updates, badly. Simple as that.

@chrisx2k3 The PS4 has plenty of games coming. Both sides have equal opportunity, I don't see why you have to hate on either. If the Wii U had third party support like the XBO/PS4 it'd be golden too.

No chance!

I don't want to sit with some contraption strapped to my face.

If I want to have a drink, go to the toilet, answer my phone, etc. I have to take it off, then fart around putting it back on. An audio headset is one thing but they really dont take much adjusting.

Not to mention that many people will probably get headaches.

VR is totally anti social and will be a bigger failure than 3DTV.

<< LINK REMOVED >>Learn the meaning of "presence" as it relates to VR, and then maybe you will start to understand where this tech is headed, and why FB would invest 2 friggin BILLION dollars into unproven tech.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'm sorry. But Online Gaming in and of itself should be considered anti social then. Lan multiplayer is mostly dead. So what you are saying is that You think a TV screen is more social somehow?

And how is a 0.97lb device cumbersome?

funny how a social network, ahem, THE social network, bought a VR company, right? It's like Zuck has so much money to spend he's buying out companies that are the antithesis of his.

The different futures of gaming : DLC (failed), mobile gaming (failed), 3D (failed), f2p (failed), micro-transactions (failed), motion controls (failed). Let's add virtual reality to the list.

It's just called "Landmark" now not "Everquest Next Landmark" - there was too much confusion over the name.

virtual reality will get old real fast, when people are knocking over cups of water and searching for there mouse and keyboards or controller with there hands, constantly lifting up the VR headset just to see whats going on around it, VR is not the future of gaming.
